…. And very often prices of products made locally increase as well because they are increased to match the tariffed goods price. So tariffs are often a no win situation, unfortunately.
Thank you for your feedback! It's true, tariffs can be a bit complex, but understanding them is important as they affect so many aspects of our economy-from the prices at the stores to the cost of housing projects.
This is a very complex subject: There is no doubt that imposition of tariffs will increase domestic prices. However the increased prices will have two effects: First; the increased prices will encourage domestic manufacturers, thus increasing economic activity. Second; tariffs will encourage offshore manufacturers to set up manufacturing enterprises inside the tariff wall. The US domestic consumer market is huge so there will be great incentive for foreign manufacturers to set up operations within the US. This will result in increased demand for US labor which will increase wages and provide more opportunities throughout our economy. All our competitors use tariffs to achieve the above. The EU, for instance, has 100% tariffs on US built cars offered for sale in Europe. The result of that is that GM set up the OPEL subsidiary to manufacture cars in Europe, similarly FORD set up TAUNUS to manufacture and sell cars in Europe. The US has been a patsy for too long, we have been taken advantage of, mainly because in the aftermath of WW2 all of our industrial competitors were pretty much smashed. Their workforces were unemployed and could not afford to buy our products. It made sense for US manufacturers to set up factories abroad to satisfy those markets. However there will be bad effects, particularly for the elderly on fixed incomes. They will not be able to take advantage of the increased job opportunities and higher wages that the tariffs will provide to our Gen Z and others. But look boomers; we have benefitted hugely from the RE bubble of the last 30 years (at least) so lets count our many blessings. This policy will be very good for our young folk who will see better opportunities and higher wages. There is a historical parallel: The tariffs installed against foreign (particularly British) manufactures in 1860, did result in a boom in US manufacturing and vaulted the US to be the world's largest economy by 1905 or so. Unfortunately the tariffs caused the war between the States. There is something similar going to happen now: Our competitors, particularly China, buy huge quantities of US agricultural products. They are certain to retaliate against US farmers by sourcing their food purchases elsewhere so we can expect a severe recession in US agriculture. There is another fly in the ointment that the US govt. is going to have to address: The cost of employment of US labor is very high. The biggest factor is the employer mandate to provide health coverage. This is a job and economy killer. Like it or not we are going to have introduce some form of universal health coverage and scrap the employer mandate. This is essential. Truthfully it is essential anyway as US healthcare costs are going to blow up our economy anyway. Ms. Edwards: Love your channel. I just recently found it and look forward to watching your content.
if the tariffs come in all your bills food energy fuel all go up by 25% where will you find the extra money from to pay for this , this could lead to job losses this will affect many countries some have been your allies for many years and some here think its great the last time this occurred was prior to the great depression , good advice though
This country hasn’t produced goods in decades. We exported all those jobs and paid them a dollar a day to do them. But at least we have billionaires! And they don’t want to pay you.
President Trump just brokered a deal with Mexico to halt tariffs for at least a month. President Trump is excellent at securing the right deal for the right situation.
You really think so? Seems to me that allies should have incurred the 10% tariff if at all, while China faced the 25%. We can't be isolationists in a global economy. If he wants to bring back American prosperity, he should fine businesses/corporations who manufacture elsewhere. But he won't do that, because those are his donors.

Yes, especially for those on fixed-income 😞
Thanks for this video. A lot of people have little to no understanding of how tariffs work

President Trump now has a conference with Canada at 3 PM. Let’s hope he can broker the same type of deal.
