Why These Scottish Sheep Eat Seaweed
Вставка

- Welcome to picturesque North Ronaldsay. This remote island, located way, way north in Scotland, is home to 50 people and some very special sheep. In order to free up grassland for cattle, humans in the early-19th century confined the flock, found nowhere else on Earth, to the shore. This left the sheep with no choice but to chow down on seaweed, making them one of only two animals able to survive on the slippery stuff. Come have a stroll (and a snack?) with these new hooven friends and the humans who love them.

Wow...you can only get to an island with a plane or a boat...
Submarines. Don't forget submarines. Or catapult.
Did you just learn that?
@@epender I wAs bEInG sARcaStIc
Do you mean a trebuchet, dear chap.
....we technically live on islands
"one of only two animals that can survive solely on seaweed"... well, what's the other one, then?
You can't leave us hanging like that.
The seaweed shark? :p
I guess it's a little off topic, idk.
The galapagos marine iguana. You're welcome :)
SpiderGirl42 - Thank you!
@@SpiderGirl42Of course! Also I think he meant to say terrestrial vertebrates, because there are mollusc, fish, crustacean and worm species that eat seaweed.
They eat it cause their Scottish and they don’t give a fook
Komodo Nation ahaha about rite
Hahahaha
they give a different type of fook
*they’re
Very cool topic. 👍 I wonder if the locals eat shepherd's pie? By the way, (@1:45 reference) the other land animal that survives exclusively on seaweed is a Galapagos iguana. The more you know...
Tosh T thanks for the fact!
Tosh--Yes, thank you. The video left us hanging with an obvious question.......
And my name is Josh.T
Well technically iguana is a reptile, sheep= animal aka mammal.
But do they taste like chicken?
Not quite the only place in the world! The Island of Auskerry a few miles south has had North Ronaldsay sheep exclusively for the past 20 odd years. Lovely animals.
Came here to say this ❤
What they didn't tell you about the sheep is they season there own meat becuase of the salt in seaweed and on the extremely rare occasion when they harvest a small amount of meat people that have tried it said it dosent need anything with it you just cook and eat without adding a single thing and it tastes amazing
I love being Scottish and watching videos with Scottish people that need subtitles it kills me
@Oritra Kar I'm from Scotland and he wasn't speaking Gaelic at all

@@GipGap you're the dumb one.
Back some 65 years ago I used to go with my grandmother and cut seaweed for the sheep and in addition she used to boil used herring bites from the long line fishermen and feed to the animals. Not sure if the cows got this food as well, as this is many years ago. This happened in a small island in the northern part of Norway.
You know what they say, you learn something new everyday.
wow it rhyme

The farmer's daughter is so pretty

How else are you supposed to get to an island
swim
They could build a bridge....
By bridge you idiot , Isle of Skye ... bridge connecting it
Awesome! I would have otherwise never known about these sheep!! Thank you guys!!!!
This raises more questions than answers!

Spookylady thanks 😂😁

There is so much in this world to experience.
Shelly used to sell seashells by the seashore, now she sells high quality seaweed to a certain amount of seaweedsheep.
Learn so much from this channel. Would have never thought of sheep eating seaweed
my wife- "why isn't there more stuff on the sheep? i would watch a 3 hour documentary on this!"
I've made some videos about these sheep, as we have a flock of them too! :) www.youtube.com/@hamishauskerry
Search for hamish auskerry, there are the same breed on another orkney island a bit south (population 2 so it gets forgotten!) and their son made a documentary last year
Nature so beautifull
these sheep are so adorable i wanna hug one
Adorable sheeps and people 😍
beautiful sheep and this island !.....wow, always on my mind!
Imagine using Tinder on this island
Sweet home Alabama...

2:21 isn't seaweed packed full of iodine? Lol
Iodine isnt actually found in salt, humans just put it there 😂
@@Redeadwalker13 i never said it was lol
@@Redeadwalker13 actually Himalayan salt have iodine so is sea salt
Yeah seaweed is full of iodine and copper and many other trace minerals. I think when she said that the sheep have "high intolerance to iodine and copper" she meant to say "high tolerance" otherwise they could not survive on seaweed. The current generation of those sheep relegated to the shore by the dyke would probably not survive on inland grasses, which have relatively low mineral content (much lower in most mins than seaweed; especially grasses are lower in iodine and copper).
@@tazboy1934 On the label of my Pink Himalayan Salt it says it is not a source of iodine. Common table salt btw has iodine because they add potassium iodide to it; have to by law.
Seaweedsheep:
25% sea
25% weed
50% sheep
I would like to live here~ i think my depression will be cured if i live here at least a year.... this is a beautiful island! Imagine you wake up to this and seeing the sheeps too! How nice it would be...
Oh I loved this thank you
I could see these sheep to be a useful replacement to current breed stock if they are bred larger, as since they can survive on a seaweed diet, they can be feed this instead of soy feed stock, which not only will greatly reduce the extreme land demand for growing soy for animal feed stock, but the seaweed has been shown to greatly reduce livestock methane emissions.
Lovely!
How lovely.
My father used to be a sheppard at Northern Morocco's coast. In the summer there was nothing to graze on so he took them to the beach where they ate the seaweed.
Fascinating
What a beautiful creature
I saw some seaweed on the seashore where seaweed sheep eating seaweed are also by the seashore
I think the sea weed taste so good on sushi. It’s no wonder they eat seaweed.
Along with goat's sheep practically eat anything
Thats because th3y S33 W33d
So those muttons are good sushi material. Delicious
They smoke weed 420 24/7
I wonder how they taste
They are happy and fluffy
In Juan Fernandez Archipielago, Chile there's an introduced variety of goat that also eats only seaweed and also drinks only seawater.
In France around the Mont St-Michel lambs eat salted grass it gives to the meat an amazing taste salty/nutty .
When a sheep's face is directly facing you, like in this video's thumbnail photo, are they even looking at you? It looks like each of their eyes are each pointing out to each side a little bit, and are not facing forward at what's straight ahead of their face. Does a sheep have to turn its head to the side to be able to see what's in front of them, and then only see with the one eye that's pointing in front of them? It doesn't look like a sheep's eyes are looking straight in front of them when their face is pointing straight ahead of them.
Hmm...I wonder how the seaweed sheep taste like? , Seaweed sheep milk cheese? Unique indeed!
I didn’t think the guy needed subtitles but then I stopped reading them and didn’t understand him.
Haha I do that exact same thing all the time it must be a mind thing
Rob B welcome to the Orcaidan accent

Scotland is on my bucket list of countries, somehow I feel the food, wine and the characteristics of the people will be amazing.
I wouldn't get so hopeful about the food. It's mostly... Okay? I mean shepperds pie and stuff is great but you can't eat it for a week straight and the rest is rather unimaginative too. And why wine? As far as I know they don't grow wine in Scottland, to few sun hours. Now Whisky is a whole different story. Thats something its worth visiting Scottland for.
Don't get me wrong. Scottland is an awesome destination. Landscape, people, whisky. All awesome. But if you're focussing on the cullinary aspect you may get disappointed

Je suis éleveuse de moutons en Bretagne. Merci pour votre reportage.
I wonder what the people are like over there. I bet it’s an interesting experience being in the community as an outsider from the city.
I'm pretty sure there would be no outsiders
Nah Scotland's a small country (and developed too) I'm 100% sure they've all left that island and come to the mainland in the past, or even regularly. They're hardly some secret amazon tribe. Also it's a thing in Scotland to retire from working and move to the countryside (e.g. All the islands around Scotland) and just become a farmer, TL:DR they're not that remote.
Source: am Scottish and live on remote island :P
They are way too cute to live in this cruel world 😭 i can just cuddle one all day

We have a saying " if a sheep makes the grass its friend , what would it eat ? " ( it is said about a person who deceives people to gain fortune and fam)
Well ....today i know what would it eat. "Sea weed"
Next there will be sea sheep just like sea cows I can't wait yo dive and see them!!!

Wow water sheep is so popular that even in they make it in real Life!
This is actually a great story on sustainable pastoralism using a very old method of sustainability, which could be adopted worldwide as a way for to reduce livestock's imprint on land resources.
This is so applicable in case of nature: wonders never cease😁....hit likes if you love nature too
I gotta say, I never thought I could never go to another island via land. Thanks for pointing that out.
