Just to clarify, even though its in the description. yes my idiot self called an olds tornado a 454 ah, what do ya do lol a guy was in a hurry to get er running. It's always fun when you can help old friends out.
These motor homes were made with the front wheel drive system from the Oldsmobile Toronado with the 455 CID. engine and Turbo Hydramatic transmission for a total of six years,1973,1974,1975, and 1976. In 1977 and 1978 they were Ods 403 CID. I worked in the RV industry during that time and they were well made .They also had an air ride two axle suspension system in rear and when it wasn't leaking they gave a very good ride. The performance and fuel mileage was consider very competitive ( 9-11 mpg) at the time, due to the lower ride and better aerodynamics .Most other motor homes were on Ford,Chevrolet, and Dodge truck chassis and they did not ride well, they too had big block engines 460, 454, and 440 CID. that got between 6-10 mpg. The demise of this classic GMC, I was told was labor cost to build in GM truck plants. The other manufacture of Motor home were built at various RV plants thru-out Northern Indiana with lower labor cost, most of these are still being built today.
Firstly - know what you're working on -- the reason you probably didn't find the right starter is you were saying chevy 454 -- it's not it's an oldsmobile 455. They used toronado drive train - most of which you can still get parts for. the wipers are hydraulic and run off power steering pump. unless its been converted.
Actually almost any large v8 motor starter will work just take the back motor part and put it on the front part of the original starter on it. When I was a poor 18 and had to buy . My 3 rd starter for my 396 and was cryin the mechanic told be just get any GM starter and switch the good back motor part onto your front. Worked great and chea !
The reason GMC when they made those went with the 455 rocket engine is due to the torque of the olds Those things were torque monsters. ASide back in the early seventies with going with a diesel like a 6V 71 Detroit they decided that they were just going to go ahead and use the olds engine.
Great GMC -- they get rarer and rarer. Take good care of her. Bring her back to life. Treat her right!
