BAK Revolver X4S Tonneau Cover Install and Troubleshooting (2021 Ford F150)

  • I am mildly obsessed with researching almost everything I plan to purchase. After getting my 2021 Ford F150 Lariat SuperCrew 3.5L EcoBoost earlier this year, the first upgrade I wanted to make was to install a cover for my bed. I needed something that I could easily get out of my way when I need access to the whole bed. I also required a cover that was secure and looked clean on the truck. After many hours of research, the option that met all of my needs and wants was the ‪@BakIndustries-TC‬ (BAK Flip) Revolver X4S Tonneau Cover. The install was fairly simple to do by myself, but I did run into a few complications that required some troubleshooting. I cover those issues in detail in this video for those that may be considering buying the Revolver X4S and or having installation issues as well.

    Just installed mine today 3/26/24. It now comes with supports at both ends of the rails and adds rock solid support for them. They need to be installed before anything else.

    I installed this cover on my 2022 Ford F-150 and didn’t have any of the problems you had, but my truck doesn’t have the spray in bed liner. My cover came in with all the hardware and didn’t have any of the aluminum shards on it. But you did a Great video explaining all the problems you had in great detail. 👍

      Thank you! I do like the cover and find it very handy being able to roll it out of the way. It looks slick and while I haven’t had anyone attempt to break into my bed, I do have a little peace of mind when hauling stuff with the cover closed.

      @@IconGarage If someone bent on criminality wants in, I guess they will find a way. In the meantime, I agree, it looks awesome and it's a great way to keep dirt, leaves, and debris out of your truck bed. I have 600 miles on my new RAM 1500 Bighorn; this is one of the upgrades I will be installing. Can't believe they did not send required hardware. That must be a rare occurrence; sounds like they didn't even believe that had happened.

    Thanks for the video. I was able to install mine in 15 minutes on my Ram 3500 long bed. Saved much time after watching your video.
    Of course it's 105 degrees outside in the Sun so I worked a little faster because of that LOL

      Awesome (regarding your speed of install)! I can sympathize with the heat tho I haven’t hit triple digits here yet but I know AC and a cold one can be great motivation to get a job done. 🍻

    I had the same problem...personally I wouldn't have cut the weather stripping. Just my opinion. I just took a crescent wrench and slightly bend the end of the bracket upwards so tailgate would close and open correctly. I do feel that the edges needs to have some sort of rubber cover on it to avoid being cut.

      Nice! I really do like the cover. I do wish the alignment was a little better as I still occasionally have one side of the latch get stuck. I’m going to guess that it probably varies a little from vehicle to vehicle.

    Missing hardware, metal shavings, parts not sized correctly. I hope this was an isolated quality control issue. I think I would've boxed it back up and had them send me another.

    Great video. I just installed mine. I had the same worry/issue with my tailgate hitting the rubber seal under the rail so I stopped and did some youtubing and found your video. I ended up cutting off the same seal to make it close easier. That might be where that water came from in the rain?? needles to say thanks for uploading it gave me the piece of mind to also cut off the seal to make it fit.

    • @IconGarage
      @IconGarage  2 роки тому

      I don’t think that is the issue with the rain. That seal is over the gap in the tailgate which isn’t really sealed off anywhere else. My thought is that it is coming through at the seal attached along the edge of the cover. At the time I installed it, it hadn’t really been out in the sun or hot so that seal wasn’t laying as flat as it could. I still get some water in around the edges. Next time I have the cover off, I may add some very thin foam on the sides under the rail to see if that helps fill any of the small gaps. I think it would be nice if there was a little bit of a ridge in the track somewhat like a gutter to ensure most of the water could not get under the seal.

    One install video I watched showed them using adhesion promoter before applying the front seal.

    • @IconGarage
      @IconGarage  2 роки тому

      That may help, but it’s the texture of my spray on liner. The seal ultimately gets wedged between the head rail on the cover and the bed so I think it makes a decent seal even if the Rhino liner doesn’t allow the adhesive to stick the best.

  • @williamswavely698
    @williamswavely698 6 місяців тому +1

    Lol, I was watching and as soon as you cut those seals, I said, well that's gonna leak. Also, it says use a heat gun to flatten out the sides after install. They were rolled up in a box for a while.

  • @dave8076
    @dave8076 Рік тому +2

    Great install and attention to detail. I have two questions. 1) My truck bed is not square between the side rails, approx 3 inch difference between the front and back. Is there any way to adjust for this? 2) How far below the top of the rails does the underside of the cover sit? I will be installing an auxiliary tank that I know will be very close to level with the top of the rails.

    • @IconGarage
      @IconGarage  Рік тому +1

      There is very little wiggle room from side to side as that was one of my struggles getting it to open and close consistently on my truck. I didn’t measure but I would guess there is less than 1/4” of play on each side. As for the depth, at most it hangs down 1/2” below the top of the bed rail. The end with the latch at the tailgate hangs down a little over an inch, but that is at the very end.

    I’m having a little trouble unlatching. Especially on the drivers side. All the videos show pull the cord and it shoots open. I have to push mine up as I pull the cord. Are u having any issues unlocking yours?

    • @IconGarage
      @IconGarage  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, mine gets stuck on occasion and I have to really pull hard to get it to come off. Mine is typically the right side. I think there is a little play in the cover (flexible materials) and when driving it might slightly shift around causing the latch on one side to be too tight to the cover. I can’t get it to happen every time I open it, but maybe 1 out of every 3 or 4 times I open it, one side seems stuck. I have checked my alignment and it seems about as close to perfect as I think I can get it.

    any issues with that bulkhead seal on the bed liner?

    • @IconGarage
      @IconGarage  4 місяці тому

      It lets a little water in at the ends but is generally fairly tightly sealed. I keep stuff in my bed often and drive around in rain frequently and I don’t ever recall anything in the bed getting wet. It’s a few drops here and there but mostly those run down the sides of the bed.

      Yes. There are cheaper options, but I like the functionality and honestly the aesthetic. It is almost flush with the top of the bed and is sleek. If it goes on sale for the holidays, definitely recommend considering this cover.

      A couple of thoughts for you. Real Truck is a retail site trying to sell products and I am willing to bet they would never show any flaws or challenges for products they are trying to profit from. I also assume their install was scripted and possibly took many takes as with any video production. I am just an average Joe installing this by myself in my home garage. This was my experience.
