Hi Brad. Greetings from the Emerald Isle. Thanks so much for the video and comparison of the curved v straight shaft edger. I’m in the process of buying one and wanted to check out the pros and cons of each. Thanks to one of your commentators my mind is made up. Straight shaft edger for me because of the more solid internal workings. Keep up the great work and enjoy your summer. From a newbie gardener here in Ireland. Cheers. Joe
I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
That depends on brand. For instance, both the ECHO PE-266 (curved) and ECHO PE-266S (straight) feature flex cables. Unfortunately, STIHL does not publish the parts manuals as public (at least not that I could find) so I can't comment on what they are made of. At least for ECHO however, both drive shafts and drive cables carry a lifetime warranty!
Is a flex cable better for the engine and the blade because it provides some cushioning if the blade hits a hard object whereas a driveshaft would have no way to dissipate any shock.
Biggest advantage withstraight shaft edge besides line of sight is hand fatigue, curved edges require more hand and arm strength to stabilize as it aways wants to till toward you (rotate) as weight of tool is not in line but offset. On short run no problem, but in my case edging many hundreds of feet at one time it gets tiresome.
I think the main reason curve trimmers and edgers are cheaper is because they use a flexible driveline while the straight shaft machines can have a solid driveline. Some straight shaft machines still have a flexible driveline though. Curved trimmers don't required a gearbox on the end so thats another reason curved trimmers are cheaper but both curved and straight edgers have gear boxes.
There is a cable driving curved shaft vs *most* straight shaft being solid shaft driven. With a solid drive shaft you dont lose power and torque from the cable flexing, you also see less break over time.
I couldn't agree more, I have a straight shaft edger and I love it more than my curved shaft edger, I also wear Steel Toe Shoes while using ANY piece of power equipment
I normally use some old steel toe rubber boots i have from working in the industrial sector. Waste not want not. Also good for keeping clippings off pants while trimming or chemical off you while spraying
The curved shaft tool has a flex shaft internal and the straight has a more robust drive shaft that is better suited to high use commercial level continuous operation. That's why the straight shaft tools are usually higher priced.
Good video. I laughed so hard when you said "if you wear sandals " I thought who would ever wear sandals while doing yard work?! But I'm sure there are a hand full of people that do.
Come by my neighborhood (Fleming Island, FL) and you'll see people weed wacking in shorts and flip-flops. I do steel toe boots and full length jeans. Miserable in 100 degree heat and humidity, but not as miserable as a trip to the ER. Thinking I might start wearing those chaps I have for chain sawing.
I can’t wait till I have my straight shaft edger, just a few weeks! Good comparison video, I’ve always used curved stick edgers and trimmers recently switched to a straight shaft trimmer and love it, so I’m going to try the straight edger as well!
That is fun! I hope it comes sooner! :) The differences in straight/curved edger are not as dramatic as straight/curved trimmer, but you will still be able to tell a difference and figure out which you prefer! :)
The explanation I was given - the higher cost of the straight-shaft machines - was due to the increased amount of moving parts - there are various gears and whatnot. with a rod going down the inside of the shaft housing connecting the trimmer to the motor, with sprockets and worm gears and the like at both ends. In the curved shaft it's a simple cable that runs down to the trimmer head. I think this is why you often don't see people putting saw blades on the curved shaft trimmers.
And that is the same explanation I gave on a video last year about straight shaft vs curved string trimmers. The only rub with edgers is that if you compare the parts lists to a curved/straight shaft edger (same model, only difference is curved vs straight), the parts are the same! :O
"sprockets and worm gears and the like at both ends" of straight-shaft? What are you talking about? Simple splined connection at engine/clutch, and bevel reduction gear with splined shaft conection at the tool-end. Way more durable than whippy-sloppy speedo-cable drive, IMO. No gear-reduction with curved, obviously.
I thank you again for a very informational video. I picked up a curved Redmax edger. I've used Redmax in the past and have nothing but good to say, however I can't find any current Redmax edgers online. Are they still in business??? Well, anyways,, I love me my edger and the results are amazing!!!!. I agree with you, I'll never edge with a stringer again. I'll use the string trimmer to trim and that's about it 😁. I enjoy your channel and FYI, I've subscribed to your channel. Keep up the good work bro.
Great video Brad 😎👍 I just ordered a new straight shaft edger today. I've always used a curved shaft before but, heard good benefits to having a straight shaft. Hope I like it!
i like that storage rack for the tools. It keeps them neat and from tilting. I read someplace that tilting the engine towards the filter is not a good idea because of gas and oil
Big difference I see between your edgers is that the straight is the Attachment System and the curved is not. Without model numbers I can't tell what power head is used, but my bet would be the curved has a slightly smaller more "home consumer quality" head. Adding a bend to metal is always a more expensive manufacturing operation - not less expensive. I'm sure Echo buys their tubing bulk not as a finished part. An attachment system with its included attachment is always going to be more expensive than a non-attachment system due to the addition of the parts it takes to make a system attachable. I've got an older PAS-265 with the stringtrimmer and edger attachments. The 265 was purchased at a equipment supplier that services landscaping companies versus my older curved head trimmer that was purchased at HomeDepot. The quality differences between the two was significant. Spending a bit more for the higher quality unit was absolutely the right thing to do, the 265 has been a rock solid workhorse for me over the past 10 years where the curved shaft home-depot junker lasted 2 seasons (it's just me for home use, not a pro.) I found a similar difference in quality when I went to a backpack blower. Unless you use your small engines a LOT, save yourself some headaches and buy the expensive pre-mixed gas that comes in gallon cans - it won't destroy your carburetor unlike ethanol fuel (with or without some sort of stabilizer / ethanol neutralizing additive) does. Or find a source for quality non-ethanol fuel.
Sorry for the confusion. They make attachment systems for both curved and straight shaft edger, so that is not actually a difference. It is just that I needed to display both and that is what I had.
@@CopperCreekCuts I still agree with Walt over the less expensive for home use vs. commercial use. The straight attachment CANNOT be used on the less powerful PAS (225) head. Only the 2620 head can use the straight edger. I am certain that the components in the shaft and gearbox are bigger, more robust and need more power to use. I like your videos but truly this is the REAL difference between the two, not the insignificant points that you brought up in the video.
All the debate on what makes a curved shaft cost less than a straight shaft trimmer. The reason is that the curved shaft edger uses a string trimmer gearbox. It shares all those parts with the string trimmer. A simple economy of scale a straight shaft edger doesn't have because of the angle of the gear set.
@@josephmartin2362 curved shaft and straight shaft use the same flex cable drive shaft. Solid shaft units are few and far between these days. Due to expense and vibration.
Dude...did you just get tired of the UFC? You did dominate as a heavyweight for awhile!!!! YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN ( you look like Jr dos Santos)!!!! Seriously, your videos are awesome...just subscribed !
edboy343 cut grass & Mr. Cut Lawn Care, LLC Oh, for sure it can be done, but down here in FL, if you try and push an edger with the wheel on the grass through a bi-weekly or overgrown yard, you quickly see what an advantage keeping the wheel on the concrete is! :)
Do you have a video on how to use the curve shaft edger. Is the blade supposed to touch the sidewalk while going down and edging. Or is it supposed to be in between the dirt and sidewalks
We started with a curved shaft Stihl....so that's going to be our preference I think. All in what you are used to I think ...although I hear straight shafts are better for taller folks.
I have never been accused of being taller folk so I don't know about that, but the straight shaft attachment I use is easier to hang up in the trailer because it doesn't curve! But yes, ultimately everything is what works best for you :)
I have a curved shafted echo gt-200r trimmer. I have really strong Bermuda grass in Arizona and I’m trying to figure out the way to use my trimmer for edging and removing the grass for winter seed. I see all the blade options for straight shaft but not much for curved. What do you suggest? I’m tempted to use this edger you recommend right through the lawn to help break up the Bermuda getting it ready for winter seed.
Thanks for the review. On the advice of my son in law, I use only hi-test gas with Stabil in my small engines. Learned the hardway; that darned ethanol breaks down! Would like to know are straight shaft trimmers a solid rod with bearings? Are the curved ones cable driven? That would explain a price differential. Have you ever used those saw blades on your trimmer. We are trying to reclaim 19 acres of pasture that has not been maintained for probably five years. The fellow that owned the property became ill and then died; his widow could not deal with the property and moved into a condo. I am trying to find the least cost way of clearing the oak and maple saplings (
In BC Canada the straight shaft edger for the kombi system is about $100 more. I bought the curved. I'm not in business, so I have no way to recoup any $$$ layout for garden tools. Just like keeping my place looking presentable.
Yeah especially got a lot big commercial property we don’t wanna walk all the way to my truck about apartments or large business area to get stick edge imagine 4 to 6 acres. So me and my friend trims and edge
My frustration comes from using it around my interlock which has metal mesh with large nails on the grass side. They hold the pavers from drifting. That’s how good interlock is done. But I don’t feel confortable when I contact this or the large nails with the edger. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Great video!!! I just got a Stihl fs56 curve shaft, I like it because I'm 5'7 and it's a shorter shaft then a strIt shaft, I got it for a hundred bucks it's like new, down the road I will get a 91 or 94. I hear they have more tork to get through dirt easier, but I'm happy with it, use it 1 time a season on a yard then string the rest of the season, but I'm sure I'll be happy with it, I got new blades coming, do they cut better with new blades? Thanks again for your videos!!!
My question would be, which CC to choose from, either 21.2 CC or 25.4 CC ??? Obviously the more CC the better but, is there any big difference in performance?
I can only speak from one anecdotal experience. I had a 25CC poulan pro and tried to use a generic hedge trimmer attachment and couldnt because it stalled out. Then used a 29 or 30CC (can't remember) and it was able to run the same attachment. So yeah, it can make a big difference!
Hi, I purchased an echo225sb and I am looking for a blower and curved shaft edger attachments. How would I find the correct model numbers so that they are compatible?
I honestly have no clue the differences between them. I am assuming the 70 has a smaller engine? If you don't plan on doing overgrown properties the might be fine for weekly maintenance. Sorry I couldn't help more!
I wonder if the Echo 2620 25.4cc straight edger is discontinued. It’s not available on HomeDepot.com. I just bought the curved 225 but would much prefer the straight one. Maybe it’s just sold out because we’re in season
The only major difference I see between the 2 types other than the obvious, is the gearbox. Both have a pinion gear, but the ring gear is different between the 2 types. Curved uses a type of beveled gear, while the straight uses a double helical gear. I would imagine that this, is where the extra cost comes into play.
I don't think I've ever used a straight shaft edger, always used the curved ones. Take those wheels off & put Skid plates on them, reduces the weight and you can move quicker.
Lawn size doesn't matter so much for edger, more about linear feet. Even then it is a question of how often are you going to be edging. Every week? Entry level should be fine. Once every two months? Might want something with more power.
Copper Creek Cuts Lawn Care Thanks for the quick response. Any specific suggestions for an edgier that I plan to use once a week for the foreseeable future?
Would you advise having a strap attachment for your trimmer. Used my trimmer this past Tuesday to 'mow' the side of a steep hill at a customers home. Any advise on that? I stood at the top of the hill and worked my way down. Got close a few times and really cut the grass short short short. I am guessing that in time I will get the hang of it. It did beat having to get out the push mower and maneuver the hill. Thanks for you comparison video. I have a straight shaft from Echo with the edger/trimmer attachments to the power end.
All personal preference! I don't have many hills in Florida, but I know for ditches I really like my SRM3020 with handlebars and two point harness. Makes things so much easier and more comfortable than using a regular trimmer with no straps.
I suppose it is possible! When I looked at the curved and straight models right next to each other, the parts were nearly identical, so I don't know how different they are as far as specs and performance!
Great video thank you. This question has been in my head for quite some time and you’ve answered it for me. Also , From the research I have gathered, these types of edgers are still non existent in the UK :( I have been searching everywhere online and can only find the combi unit attachments! Can somebody please prove me wrong?
Great video! I debated on a straight or curved edger attachment for my Kombi unit, and settled on the curved, since it was half the price, and I like not being directly behind the line of flinging debris! Only concern is the durability....if it holds up, I'm thinking I will be happy with the curved over the straight shaft edger attachment.
Great question! I honestly don't know. I am assuming you could theoretically just swap the heads out but I don't know if that is an approved thing or not. Also probably wouldn't be a quick process.

Fc 56
My question would be, which CC to choose from, either 21.2 CC or 25.4 CC ??? Obviously the more CC the better but, is there any big difference in performance?
I can only speak from one anecdotal experience. I had a 25CC poulan pro and tried to use a generic hedge trimmer attachment and couldnt because it stalled out. Then used a 29 or 30CC (can't remember) and it was able to run the same attachment. So yeah, it can make a big difference!
Very informative video. 👍
Thank you, I appreciate that! :)
What’s ur advice on someone who wanna get into lawn care
Hi, I purchased an echo225sb and I am looking for a blower and curved shaft edger attachments. How would I find the correct model numbers so that they are compatible?
www.echo-usa.com I think there is only one blower and one curved shaft edger attachment in the PAS lineup, so it shouldn't be an issue! :)
Echo PAS straight shaft edger: www.echo-usa.com/Products/Pro-Attachment-Series/straight-shaft-edger-attachment
Tks for the information
It definitely helped
You are very welcome, thank you for watching!
Good comparison Brad!
Thank you Mr. Guess! When's that baby coming out? :)
Copper Creek Cuts less than 8 weeks!
Thank you! Great Video!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
My first edger was a wooden stick with a sprocket on the end
Hey, that gets the job done, too! ;) Thanks for watching!
@@CopperCreekCuts Maybe if youre a meth-head running a lawn company, but in my case engine-edgers weren't a thing in the 70s (lest not in my area)
GOOD VIDEO. WOULD YOU recommend THE FC 70 OR 91?
I honestly have no clue the differences between them. I am assuming the 70 has a smaller engine? If you don't plan on doing overgrown properties the might be fine for weekly maintenance. Sorry I couldn't help more!
Copper Creek Cuts Lawn Care all good!
I run a 70 it works fine also have the 90 heavier but a lot more power
Jw, don’t the SS edgers use the same tubing as the SS trimmers?
I wonder if the Echo 2620 25.4cc straight edger is discontinued. It’s not available on HomeDepot.com. I just bought the curved 225 but would much prefer the straight one. Maybe it’s just sold out because we’re in season
I thought they just released it earlier this year, so maybe they just don't have the supply? I am not sure, but great question!
Home Depot mostly sells the PE225. To really get one you should get it at an echo dealer or online
TopFin good point. It is available on Echo’s website directly I’ll just go that route!
Copper Creek Cuts Lawn Care they’re back online at HD but I ordered it from our local lawn mower shop. Can’t wait to get that perfect edge!
The only major difference I see between the 2 types other than the obvious, is the gearbox. Both have a pinion gear, but the ring gear is different between the 2 types. Curved uses a type of beveled gear, while the straight uses a double helical gear. I would imagine that this, is where the extra cost comes into play.
Very good video
hi great video which 1 do you proffer ?
I like the straight shaft one because it is easier to use on tiny driveways with cars!
I don't think I've ever used a straight shaft edger, always used the curved ones. Take those wheels off & put Skid plates on them, reduces the weight and you can move quicker.
That is a pretty wild notion! I would pay to see a video on that mod! ;)
The Stihl gear boxes come with the skid plates and are replaceable if you wear them out. Taking the wheel off is a simple procedure.
Interesting on the skid plate. Hadn't thought of that.
Send me a picture of the skid plate. bladesdown@yahoo.com
I'd also love to see the skid plate so i can do this as well please.. dacemaintenanceandlandscaping@gmail.com
Well, which do you prefer or do you just use them as needed since you have both? It seems you favor straight?
Yeah, there are lots of tight driveways I run into.
What kind of edger should I use I don't have that big of a lawn and I'm only 12 years old
Cheapest one you can get and don't let the fuel go stale.
Hey Brad. Any recommendations on a stick edger for 1/2 acre lawn? Thanks.
Straight guy here. 👍
Good vid, thank you!
Hi I want some advice I wanna start doing lawn care my self where I’m from it’s completely different from the states
Thanks for the tips
You bet, I hope they come in handy one day! :)
Great video
Thank you very much for watching and commenting! ;)
I THINK ALL I GOT OUT OF THIS WAS THE SHAFT.
XD
Straight shaft is better for me, because I'm 6 feet tall and the straight shaft is more comfortable for me.
5'9" shorty here, so I can't relate! ;)
Try being 6'7. It's hard to buy equpment.
Is craftsmen edging blades good to use ?
Never used them but they are just pieces of metal, so not too much different about them other than wear rates.
Is the straight shaft edger stronger than the curved?
I think the straight shaft has more torque and curved has a longer gear. I run a curve stihl and have run straight too and they're much heavier .
That is wild! I would ask 'uk lawn care' or 'jason gardener'. Both have youtube channels and are lawn guys full time. They might know.
Copper Creek Cuts Lawn Care amazing! Thank.you for replying!
What do you think of the FC 90?? Stihl?
I've never used one but have no reason to doubt it is a solid piece of equipment. 28CC seems like it should be able to handle pretty much anything.
Good reasoning. Yes, straight shaft gets you a lot dirtier for sure!
straight shaft has more torque ( can even bend the blade ) better for first time edging .
Thanks for the feedback!
Nice video and very professional...good job...
Thank you for watching and leaving those kind words, I appreciate it! :)
FYI stick edger was out in 1987 or 88. I had one.
Good video
Thanks for the visit!
Hey question how much did ur bobcat quickcut stand on mower cost
Well keep in mind your price may vary, but my dealer sells them for $6900 before tax.
Copper Creek Cuts ok thanks
Really good job ..
Thank you for watching and leaving kind words, I appreciate that! :)
Is it odd ive been using straight edgers all my life and i had no idea curved existed
THE MORE YOU KNOW ;)
Yes
Hey if I have an echo 225 straight shift trimmer is there a conversion for the edger ?
Great question! I honestly don't know. I am assuming you could theoretically just swap the heads out but I don't know if that is an approved thing or not. Also probably wouldn't be a quick process.
Yes you can. It doesn’t take long at all.
@@CopperCreekCuts who in the world would have to “approve” swapping power equipment heads out? 🤷♂️
Price has nothing to do with which is popular but what the consumers are willing to pay for better system
If you say so.
