I have a feeling this video is about to surge in the trends, on account of the Taylor Swift fiasco involving Ticketmaster, who has only gotten bigger since the 90's
I really don't enjoy their music, but I've always had a lot of respect for Pearl Jam as musicians and people. Musical taste is subjective but integrity isn't.
Agreed. I've never had a bad word to say about any of these guys, I just don't care for them musically. The firm stance they took for what they believed at the time is something very difficult to come by in the modern era. We would benefit from more of the integrity this band displayed.
Fugazi never had a problem selling tickets without using Ticketmaster. What a self serving “cause.” Pearl Jam did everything to fight Ticketmaster except stop giving money to Ticketmaster.
I saw PJ here in Australia in Circa 1996 during the Vitalogy tour. They where awesome, they played for 2.5 hours and Dave Grohl came out to play drums during the 5 song encore. Also - the crowd when totally nuts during the show storming the front - elite tickets area that was made up of rows of seats. Eddie stopped the show for 15mins (not part of their performance time) to make sure fans where safe, settled down and didn’t surge forward and hurt anyone. Eddie Made the entire crowd move backwards 2 meters so people at the front didn’t get crushed. He also made everyone jump up and down instead of move forward. Because it was PJ (& because Eddie said they wouldn’t play another note until everyone in the room was safe) people listened and calmed down, no one got hurt. It was masterfully well handled! They where ‘real’ & they where awesome!
Respect the integrity displayed by the band throughout. Think they realized that playing “out of the way” venues may have inadvertently caused fans to spend more money to travel there and compromised accordingly.
I saw the Las Cruces, NM show @ the Pan American Center. My college Buddy’s little sister was supposed to go to the Summer ‘95 show, but Eddie Vedder got sick & the gig was postponed to the Autumn! $25 & other party favors, was the price. The Ramones opened the show!
It’s even horrible at local levels of government where I live people flush with cash have politicians ears or are buddy buddy with councillors or mayors who are there neighbours
Funny u just posted this I’ve been jamming Pearl Jam all week including rn and some Everclear and AIC can’t get enough of my 90s music even bush which gets hated on for god knows why
Yeah wtf is everyone's problem with Bush anyway? They wrote some great songs. They weren't the most unique songs but they did make a big name for themselves off of them. I like them! I like a lot of bands people hate on for no reason that I'm aware of.
@@Douglas_I dude I love a lot of bush songs they’re a great band and Gavin is a great singer I rlly only think it’s bc of the stupid nirvana comparisons which I can barely understand they rlly aren’t that close of sounds it was just the time of music one of my favorites
Yep I bought red hot chili pepper tickets for the future concert almost $300 for 2 tickets lol They are good seats at least and I got them right when they got on sale so they aren’t resale. When Ticketmaster started selling resale tickets it’s become even more crazy. They do a good job to hide that check box to not see the resale ticket prices so you sometimes don’t even know the freaking real price on top of having to do this all fast before the tickets sell out.
TicketMaster is a leech. I was at that Soldier's Field show. Somebody in one of the private boxes sent a complaint to the band that they couldn't hear the music. Vedder went off on the spoiled rich kids for about 15 minutes, then the band launched into "This Is Not For You". AWESOME!
Back in the 90's I could afford to go to a show most weekends. Nowadays that's impossible. Ticket prices are out of control. File sharing on the internet destroyed cheap tickets. Bands have to give their music away to attract people to their expensive live shows. Ticketmaster is just the irritating cherry on top.
Yup Yup , used to be the opposite way. The bands would tour to promote their release. Now they release the music to promote the show. It used to be under 20$ for any show. Those days are long gone.
I got to see them during this time. I managed to win the ticket lottery (they were sold out within 1-2 minutes) and bought four tickets to a show in Toledo (not normally a major concert hotspot, lol). Including the service fees, the tickets were $90. I had offers to buy them at $100 each from people who were planning on reselling them for even higher.
I hate Ticketmaster so much! They completely ruin me wanting to go see some bands perform with their disgusting prices! I've had to reload and search for less better seats because their "service fee" is sometimes the cost of another ticket!!
I liked it. It made me love PJ even more. I was one of those young guys that didn’t have a ton of money for tickets. I’ve seen them 5 times starting in the ‘90’s! The ticket prices and availability now. Makes it hard…. I still love me some Pearl Jam though. Epic band. My favorite
I remember the first concert I ever went to, it was Rage Against The Machine in San Antonio TX, they cancelled the concert but did a later date and honored the tickets bought. My ticket was priced at $45.00, but I bought scalped so it cost me $80.00. The most lowest price I ever paid for a ticket was $20.00 to see Willy Nelson in The Flores County Store, also in San Antonio.
I love Pearl Jam, though I've never seen them in concert. I have a friend who had tickets to see them during their battle with Ticketmaster. He was given a refund. So cool the way the band stood up for their fans in this way! I'm also a fan of the bands who got onboard with Pearl Jam, and Rolling Stone magazine. Also a fan of the musical acts who lent Stone and Jeff a hand during the hearings.
I have been blessed, i have seen pj 5 times in the 90s. 4 of the 5 times i got scalpers tickets, no buying months ahead no line ups ,way better seats . Paid 20 bucks more than ticket price. My biggest problem was getting there. Also look at the recent rage against the machine crap, no normal people could pay those prices. Pearl jam is the best no matter what.
Ticketmaster are absolute leeches who deserve to be put out of business. If the government truly served the people instead of special interests, they would have broken up TM's monopoly decades ago.
I was at the San Francisco Polo Field show where Eddie was sick with stomach issues. He was touring with Neil Young and Bad Religion opening. I was bummed that Vedder couldn’t play more, but Neil Young gave a great performance in leu of his absence and Bad Religion was amazing. We were really bummed, but reimbursed for ticket costs and it was still a rad show with what it was. Eddie felt terrible about not being able to play, that was evident.
Blink 182 reunion brought me here. Some people paid 400 for the very back and 800 for sears and 1300. I guess they really really found a new way to cheat us with this new technology. If a bunch of people go on there to get tickets at the same time price goes up for the show. The future looks great for them.....
When Pearl Jam started voicing their disapproval they had the backing of bands like Metallica, RHCP, U2 but when it came to actually taking an actual stand they were the only ones with the balls to actually do it and they stood alone against let's face it unbeatable odds for the sake of their integrity and their fans and I will forever love them for it.
The intersection where youth and dreams die. When you realize the machine is to powerful to fight and the meat coming out the other end of the grinder is your own. At least they tried though... respect for that
I've never seen Pearl Jam in concert. But all of my favorite shows were in small venues. Big concerts are okay. But in a small venue everything feels more intimate. You can actually see the band without looking at a screen. You can even get pictures and autographs from some bands at certain places. Pearl Jam has been one of my favorite bands since I first heard them. I don't have all of their albums but I have the first 8-10 of them and I can listen to all of them start to finish, one after the other. Ticket Master is like the Walmart or Amazon of Ticket sales. You either work with them, for them, or they put you out of business. Vultures with no talent bleeding fans dry
Ticketmaster really did manipulate themselves into a monopoly on ticket sales and I'm glad that other sales outlets like Vivid and LiveNation exist just to offer alternatives. I'm not saying they are better. I'd actually prefer to buy directly from the venue (and digitally) when possible, to avoid exorbitant fees. I have missed seeing quite a few bands due to pricing issues, but this has a lot to do with venues as well as ticket distribution.
Love pearl jam... I remember getting their greatest hits record in hs... and boy, has that helped me out a ton, with all of the BS that I had to put up with.... and yes, no question, I would've done the exact same thing that PJ did...
I was shocked that more bands didn't join the cause, the bands he mentions were very loosely affiliated, none of which really made a stand. Had REM, STP Green Day, U2 n the rest been as invested in actually keeping the prices down it may have worked. Ie REM $40 tickets with $6.50 surcharge from ticket master, while PJ was trying to keep under $20 ($18) 4 tix to PJ $72 4 tix to REM $186 Fed govt is horseshit, Still can't buy a tik anywhere wo paying crazy service fees to all those new upcoming companies that gave reason to drop suite, nope, TICKETMASTER! Still 25+ years later
I love Pearl Jam as individuals and AA musicians but their fight against Ticketmaster i love and respect almost as much as i love their music, maybe just as much or more...it's one of the greatest fights ever for the people and i hope they're never forgotten for their music or their fight against big business ..it's just sad that 30 years Ticketmaster is more powerful than ever..my fingers are tightly crossed they'll see their destruction soon
Sadly these days, ticketmaster overinflates their prices and nobody says a word.. $1,000 for a floor ticket to see Tool? I remember they used to be $40.. It's a disgrace, I wish more of today's artists would stand up but they don't seem to care anymore.. Nobody cares!
@@daveo9844 Same, I've been to over 100 concerts in my life which is mind blowing because I don't see how kids these days have that kind of possibility! So I feel blessed for all those memories & experiences as I can't fathom that the youth of today has even close to as much fun as we did! It was the dawn of the internet which opened up the world and we were able to meet so many cool people before Facebook or Twitter was even a thing, all we needed was a dial up modem and a car! Not too fond of crowds these days anyway so it would have to be Pink Floyd reuniting for me to go to a show! I feel bad for today's kids, nobody is looking out for them these days, back then at least bands made an effort to care.. Oh well, not losing any sleep over it and I wouldn't trade any of my past experiences for anything new anyway!✌️
I get what you're saying to a point but Mike doesn't build and sell the guitars himself so he doesn't have a lot of control over the price. Also, the one you're referring to is a limited edition model. If PJ was only selling 100 tickets to their shows back then the ticket prices would've been crazy high too. Side note, a more affordable version of his guitar is in the works. Have a great day!
I wish every band cared like this. Take metallica fire example, they likely would've done the opposite here. They would've joined with Ticketmaster to find the highest price tickets fans are willing to pay.
@@Douglas_I yeah but Metallica was right. Now musicians are getting screwed cause record sales are irrelevant and musicians get 0 compensation for streaming
I seem to remember The Eagle's Hell Freezes Over your tickets being $250. Hell WILL freeze over before I pay that much. Though I'd pay it to see Hendrix or The Doors!
Ticketmaster is still a huge problem. John Oliver just did a long piece on them and not much has changed. They're still jacking up prices and controlling the live event industry. Not just music.
I just bought 2 $50 tickets for a show in August. I ended up paying $160. That’s $30 extra per ticket. All because of service fees. Tickets bought through AXS, btw, but still. Doubt it would’ve been much different if it was Ticketmaster. Why do I need to pay $15 to get physical tickets? Why are the service fees $15 per ticket? And the ticket insurance didn’t even have a price on it till they actually charged me, which was $16. It’s such a scummy system.
100 bucks a ticket is cheap nowadays if you wanna see some good shows. I was going to try and see Motley Crew but their nosebleed seats were over 200 bucks a seat.
Funny side note. One of the unconventional venues they went to was The Empire Polo Field next to Palm Springs in Indio, CA. A couple guys attended the show who were apart of a promotion company themselves called GoldenVoice. That venue would go on to become COACHELLA.
I wanted to see Janet Jackson in concert a few years back and the lowest ticket was about $150 - $200 something like that. I was like yeah I don't want to see her that bad LOL.
My neighbor and I both tried calling all day! Lol Neither could get through..we vowed to get each other's tickets, too, and then run over...if either got through. We never did! 🤣

Not a PJ fan but I have always respected their stand on this. I was recently ripped off by ticket scamster when I couldn't attend a concert. I bought the insurance and everything and they would not refund my tickets. Fuck ticket master.
Absolutely with you. Not a fan but respect their stand
last 3 words said it BEST!!!
This whole saga really proved PJ's point in how TM having a monopoly was bad for artists and their fans.
I have a feeling this video is about to surge in the trends, on account of the Taylor Swift fiasco involving Ticketmaster, who has only gotten bigger since the 90's
Interesting considering their current tour has nose bleed seats for $450 for a set of two tickets. Times have changed.
I can remember they were looking into playing at an airport in my town. The town council reviewed videos of Pearl Jam concerts and said "No".
I took a drink of beer everytime this guy says tickets in this video..I'm trashed!!
Wow! I had NO CLUE about this! I was never a huge fan of their music (and it’s okay), but I have a LOT more respect for them now!
I love that quote about middlemen. Like they deserve to leech off of the bands talent and fans. Utterly ridiculous.
Fugazi never had a problem selling tickets without using Ticketmaster. What a self serving “cause.” Pearl Jam did everything to fight Ticketmaster except stop giving money to Ticketmaster.
I wish Jeff Ament wouldve shown up to the hearing with his really crazy hat. He went kinda conservative there with the Mariners ball cap.
Lobbyists & Lobbying should be illegal.
Agree. Overturn "Citizens United"
It’s even horrible at local levels of government where I live people flush with cash have politicians ears or are buddy buddy with councillors or mayors who are there neighbours
Maybe we could all chip in to lobby for that!
That only be doable if we switched over to communism.
Welcome to the free market. You think people are loaded around here because they have a good conscious?
Damn, 30 USD for a headline concert. Now look at the prices. Easily 125+
Yet in 2022, they still sell tickets through ticket master for their concerts
It's hilarious looking back at the prices. Now you can't go see the fking Chilli peppers without paying a billion dollars for nose bleed seats.
Yup saw them in 2013 I think and nosebleeds were crazy expensive
I tried to get tickets to see Frusciante’s return this July and tickets were $700 each near nosebleed sections. Ridiculous.
Oh yeah! Not only if it can be sold these days, but it's how much. GREED
Epic band. My favorite
Yup. Sucks they made up and the change they were pushing for only got worse with the fees.
Sad that no other artists jumped on board with the pearl jam. Much respect!!
Just did a fan club presale for PJ and had to register with Ticketmaster to do it!
I ❤️ Pearl Jam. Thank you for sharing this video, 😊💓🤘✌️
Ticketmaster are absolute leeches who deserve to be put out of business. If the government truly served the people instead of special interests, they would have broken up TM's monopoly decades ago.
Eddie got into a fight with Mike Tyson. He slapped Mike then threw pot on his head. Thats why McCready never ate oatmeal after 1990
I was at the San Francisco Polo Field show where Eddie was sick with stomach issues.
I can respect what PJ was trying to do, but the reality of the situation was it's a battle they were never going to win.
Blink 182 reunion brought me here. Some people paid 400 for the very back and 800 for sears and 1300. I guess they really really found a new way to cheat us with this new technology. If a bunch of people go on there to get tickets at the same time price goes up for the show. The future looks great for them.....
the tears of the wealthy corporatist. 18:07 boo hoo "they were mean to me in our Beverly Hills restaurant"
lol beat me to it. was just going to post about this
The baby teared up recalling it.. god I wish they'd done much worse to him and his family and give him something to cry about
And here we are. Tickets to go see garbage like PINK are $500. No one's worth that much.
Vultures with no talent bleeding fans dry
all my best memories of any band came from small venues, the newport music hall in columbus ohio being my favorite!
All I can say is times have changed drastically
28 years later and now Taylor Swift fans are now in a dispute with Ticketmaster.
Love Pearl jam
Love Pearl Jam! They have my respect too. Awesome video! 💖
But Livenation=Ticketmaster
Love pearl jam... I remember getting their greatest hits record in hs... and boy, has that helped me out a ton, with all of the BS that I had to put up with.... and yes, no question, I would've done the exact same thing that PJ did...
He mentioned nothing about PJ's record company who should have united with other labels to fight Ticketmaster.
To see them now?
Can't afford it.
I was shocked that more bands didn't join the cause, the bands he mentions were very loosely affiliated, none of which really made a stand.
Had REM, STP Green Day, U2 n the rest been as invested in actually keeping the prices down it may have worked.
Ie REM $40 tickets with $6.50 surcharge from ticket master, while PJ was trying to keep under $20 ($18)
4 tix to PJ $72
4 tix to REM $186
Fed govt is horseshit, Still can't buy a tik anywhere wo paying crazy service fees to all those new upcoming companies that gave reason to drop suite, nope, TICKETMASTER!
Still 25+ years later
Wish more bands stood up to these fees today.
I don’t think musicians care about their fans anymore knowing no one cares about stealing from them. I know I wouldn’t.
More couch time for me unfortunately. Refuse to pay bs prices.
2020s: Mike McCready signature guitar $15000. My how the turntables
@@Douglas_I my bad I didn’t realize it was limited edition. Thank you Mike Mc- I mean Doug Ireland 😉
I wish every band cared like this. Take metallica fire example, they likely would've done the opposite here. They would've joined with Ticketmaster to find the highest price tickets fans are willing to pay.
I feel like Metallica is a bad example because of the whole Napster thing
@@beekay2186 that's my point. Their in it for the money. Not like Pearl Jam, who actually care about the fans!
Ticketmaster and the ever increasingly ridiculous Ticket prices are the reason I stopped going to concerts 20+ years ago.
Somehow I don't feel sorry for the crying CEO at the Beverly Hills restaurant or his well funded daughter..at all😁
Taylor Swift fans really need to watch this video and realize that it's not all Taylor Swift's fault
Loving these longer vids
What’s the background music?
Rosen, because of course his name is Rosen.
Shut it down
They went out like Rage "Against" The Machine. 😂
Rage against the machine will not tolerate criticism of Pfizer, Goldman Sachs or DuPont.
Here we are a mere 30 years later and the DOJ has now taken up the fight against Ticketmaster.
The Grateful Dead started doing this in the early 80s. They were allotted half the venue. Plus you got really nice looking tickets.
I wanted to see Janet Jackson in concert a few years back and the lowest ticket was about $150 - $200 something like that. I was like yeah I don't want to see her that bad LOL.
My neighbor and I both tried calling all day! Lol
Neither could get through..we vowed to get each other's tickets, too, and then run over...if either got through. We never did! 🤣
Ironically, I just got a presale email for Pearl Jam’s 2022 tour from… Ticketmaster 🤣 🎫
TMs were
The original overpriced criminals
Wow.....the amount of power these corporations have. I cant even choose not to use them even if I didnt want to? They would sue who I did? How does that work?
It was good prices, even with the inflation. The middle-class, with a lower salary, we could buy a lot of things.

@@randall9000 yes, yes there's certainly nothing else we can criticise millionaires for, best to go after their hair. Well played, my friend.
Don't forget about the great canceling of shows in 2020. They refused to refund tickets and ghosted everyone.
I refuse to go to big concerts anymore. I remember camping out the night before tickets would go on sale for shows I've attended. If I was in front of the line, I was getting the better seats for the same price as someone in the back of the line for seats far from the stage. Now the good seats are put aside to be sold for thousands. Even nosebleeds are sold for insane prices. The tickets should all be the same price. First come first serve.
We shouldn't have to be dealing with Ticketmaster. Who gave them the right to own the rights to ticket sales for bands?
I only go to small venues, I just won't go if it's nose bleed tickets. Ticketmaster can suck it.
Well you should of thought twice about stealing music then. Bands have to charge those prices now to turn a profit. If propel didn’t steal from musicians ticket prices would still be low.
