Huge controversy over here in the States about FIFA and the World Cup. NFL players play on these fields with turf and FIFA forced grass. NFL players have been asking for it for years and it really is sickening they only do it because the World Cup is coming to town
Not sure why they won’t do it for the NFL, the World Cup is probably the biggest sporting event globally though so I’m not surprised they are doing all they can! They should keep grass for the NFL though!
@@DNReacts because money. NFL owners scrimp every cent they can get. Turf being easier and less costly to maintain then grass is. During the 2020 season, 49ers lost 3 players on a newly installed Turf field at MetLife, field was ruled to be within " acceptable parameters ". (Not counting how many Giants players or Jets players were lost that season due to the brand new turf field which was " sticky " according to players)
@@DNReacts Many college football stadiums also have artificial turf fields. Artificial turf fields first became common during the 1970's. The current artificial turf is levels above what was used in 1970's and 1980's, which were nothing more than mats with short blades of plastic "grass" glued down onto asphalt. The artificial turf at old Busch Stadium in St. Louis was notorious for ground-level temperatures of over 120 degrees F (49 degrees C) during the Summer and baseball season. BC Place (Vancouver), Lumen Field (Seattle), NRG Stadium (Houston), AT&T Stadium (Dallas), Arrowhead Stadium (Kansas City), Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta), Met-Life Stadium (New Jersey) and Gillette Stadium (Foxboro, MA) all have artificial turf fields, and will be covered with natural grass fields for the World Cup. As far as a "controversy" regarding putting down natural grass on top of artificial turf for soccer ...we've been doing that here in North America at least as far back as the 1994 World Cup, and still do so when European clubs come here for pre-season matches.

Despite being the most profitable league, NFL owners are cheap scum. Players have been destroying their knees on artificial grass forever. The NFLPA need to demand real grass for any open air or retractable stadiums.

I know they gloss over the stadium in Philly (Lincoln Financial Field) but it might actually host the most historically significant game in the history of the World Cup. Philadelphia is where the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776. On July 4, 2024 (250 years later), it might host the home country in a round of 16 game. Even if it doesn't, America will celebrate its 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by hosting a game in the city that it was signed.
Imagine if that round of 16 game turns out to be USA vs. England lol
The reason SoFi doesn't get the Final is because the field is too narrow and they are going to have to remove a bunch of the seats in the lower bowl to make sure a proper sized field can fit.
That rubbish, the main reason is broadcasters, timezone sucks for people that live in asia and Europe

Obviously they ended up picking MetLife because logistically it’s the one that makes the most sense(largest metro area, best public transportation,closest time zone to the rest of the world, etc..) SoFi stadium will still get a seat reduction because of the field dimensions being too narrow. With the field being raised, that’ll bring down the capacity to around 60K. With that being said, FIFA requires the WC final stadium to be 80K or above. Thus being the reason they had left out SoFi from contention a couple months ago.
its bull, SoFi was always meant to have soccer matches and specifically to host some WC games. Hosting international matches is part of how the stadium was sold to the city.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Lumen Field were the only NFL stadiums that were designed with the intention of also hosting MLS teams so they have the proper seating arrangements and site-lines for soccer matches. Metlife and SoFi were never meant to host soccer matches and will require major renovations prior to the world cup. Metlife got the final simply because it's in New York/New Jersey.
Which made me mad as a texting. Because Jerry world was definitely designed with soccer in mine. But I understand that the stadium is a bit difficult to get to if you're not from that area even though it's not too far from the airport.
MetLife also got the final because Infrastructure wise, it's the most accessible in terms of public transportation/ travel overall.
Actually Sofi was built with soccer in mind. The seats are easily retractable.

Metlife was actually built with soccer in mind (it's hosted numerous soccer matches since it's opening, including Gold Cup and Copa America play)...it's just that FIFA requires an even wider surface for major tournaments like the World Cup. But yes, the fact that it's right outside of NYC was the big seller...
Living one town over from Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, and attending Patriots games there for the least 20+ years, I am excited to have the World Cup visit our stadium! We've never had that big a sporting event here, because being in the North East, and not domed, it does not meet NFL requirements for the SuperBowl. But Tom Brady played nearly his entire career at Gillette and to now host a number of World Cup games, that will be a treat!
Part of the reason why SoFi is not hosting the Finals is because it is on the west coast and the organizer feel it might be too far from Europe. Also, in the beginning the owner didn't want to put in natural grass.
that and the fact that FIFA wants the final played on a max size pitch. neither SoFi nor "JerryWorld" can accommodate it, where as metlife can.

I think the reason why no college stadiums are being used - even the massive ones - are twofold: 1, most don't have wide-enough fields and 2, the surrounding areas often don't support the required infrastructure (hotels, etc.)
They don't have real seats. FIFA are not gonna make fans sit on a bench
Lumen is home to both Seahawks and Sounders and Mercedes Benz is home to both falcons and Atlanta FC
And also those stadiums were built with soccer and football in mind. Unlike other shared stadiums where the mls team was just thrown in.
The final should have been at Sofi or Atlanta for the sheer beauty of the stadiums, or Estadio Azteca for the vibes and history of Pele and Maradona

SoFi couldn't host the final because the number of seats that needed to be removed to fit a soccer pitch brought them below FIFA's minimum seating capacity for the final.
BC Place and BMO Field have hosted FIFA finals before.
Vancouver hosted the Final of the 2015 Women's World Cup
Toronto hosted the Final of both the Men's and Women's U-20 World Cups in 2007 and 2014.
BMO is the ONLY stadium on this list that was built specifically for soccer.

BMO is a multipurpose stadium. CFL uses it. That's why Geodis Park in Nashville can say they are the largest soccer specific stadium in the US and Canada.
@@titanbronco1627 BMO Field was originally built for MLS' Toronto FC when it opened in 2007, while the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL played in the Rogers Center until moving to BMO Field in 2016. The stadium has been renovated and expanded to accommodate the Argonauts.
Mercedes Benz stadium is pretty nice. MLS Atlanta United FC play there and it's probably the best looking MLS stadium currently.

It should have been at SoFi Stadium, but the large time difference with Europe would probably be the main problem. They'd have to hold the final in the morning for Europe to see it late in the evening
MetLife Stadium is only 5 miles (8 km) from New York. North New Jersey is part of the New York metropolitan area, and is effectively an extension of New York. It's actually closer to New York's City Hall than Wembley is to Westminster Abbey

Fun fact about Lumen Field is that it was only converted to a duel use stadium to get the soccer supporters vote on the ballot measure. If the measure didn't past the Seahawks would have left the city.
Sofi stadium isn't as easy to convert to the World Cup field size as some of the other stadiums, which was an issue in getting games closer to the final.
I wasn't sure what stadiums were going to be used for the world cup. In the United States most of the football(soccer) stadiums only hold around 20 to 30k fans which wouldn't be enough for world cup games. But the American football stadiums have much bigger capacities but aren't built for a soccer viewing experience.

SoFi was only meant to cost about 2.5 billion but rain and weather delays pushed it back tremendously which balloons costs up to 5 billion.

SoFi in LA won’t host the final because the dimensions of the field currently are too narrow and in order to be able to host the World Cup they’re gonna have to remove seats from the bottom tier, reducing its capacity. That being said, with the capacity reduction it won’t have the capacity needed for a WC final which FIFA requires it to be 80,000+

Mercedes-Benz Stadium was built as a dual-purpose American Football and Soccer stadium. of their two tenants, Atlanta United of the MLS is not only the most successful of the two, but the Attendance record at that stadium is held by Atlanta United.
World cup should not be played on artificial turf
Gotta think of locker rooms, concourse levels, etc… they also count that into the price of the stadium.
6:58 The Seahawks play their too, The Sounders and Seahawks ground share Lumen Field. And it's not the only field that the Sounders share, the Sounders Practice Facility, Starfire Sports Complex, is shared between them, and the Seattle SeaWolves of Major League Rugby.
Sofi Stadium is NOT climate controlled, it's covered so that the fans and players don't get sunburned. The cover is translucent to let in natural light. But it's not what I would call a "dome" and it's certainly not climate controlled.
6:51 Stadiums like that aren't built for soccer alone, even less so in 2002 when it was built. It's the Seahawks stadium and the Sounders are lucky enough to play there. You can also look at seat count, if it has 31k + seats it isn't a soccer specific stadium, as the largest soccer specific stadium in the US is only 30K seats. Which is still pretty impressive considering the popularity of the sport in the US.
Lumen field was built with soccer in mind. The owner wanted to attract an mls expansion team in the future which ended up happening…

MetLife was picked because from what I i could tell was closeness to NYC and better Time Zone than west coast to start a game that all of Europe can watch. A noon game in NYC vs LA woul be 8PM vs 11PM in Moscow.
It's to my understanding that it's spread out so the countries wiill not have one area flooded with tons of visitors for a month straight. And that the groups will be "Podded" and just play in one area of the country for group stage

I was shocked that the Rose Bowl in Pasadena was no selected as a venue. It has hosted a World Cup Final previously as well as a Women's World Cup. But it does lack the modern amenities even though they can cram 110,000 in there if they want to, but it's more bleacher style seating.
This will be the highest attended FIFA World Cup ever.
Not only are there more teams and more games, but the seating capacity in Mexico and Canada is already high, then add the gigantic stadiums in the States...
It will break previous attendance records by a considerable amount.
And to be honest, of all the locations they have listed, there isnt going to ba a bad seat in the house!
Every one of these stadiums is pretty amazing, and the host cities will be ready for the fans.
Met life has the biggest capacity at over 100k that's probably why

The newer US football stadiums were designed to accommodate soccer as well. For example in Seattle (which I'm 4 hrs from) Lumen Field hosts both the Sounders & Seahawks. The Atlanta & New England stadiums do that as well, along w/ others that didn't make the World Cup cut like Phoenix & Chicago. LA's Sofi doesn't because there are already 2 soccer specific stadiums there.

Tickets should be cheaper if you live in the host nation for category 4 tickets, I’m sure FIFA will jack the prices up this time though. 2018 tickets for residents were $20 and 2022 were $11 for group stage matches except for the opener. For the 2022, categoty 1 best seats were $220, category 2 $165 and category 3 $69 for the group games.

The Seattle stadium and the KC stadium are in competition for the loudest stadiums. KC is 143.3 decibels. Therefore is the loudest.
I went to the Copa America final at Met Life a few years ago (the one where Argentina lost to Chile and Messi threw a hissy fit and "retired" from international competition afterward) and it's actually a great venue for soccer. I was waaaaaaaaay up at the top and had a great view.

When they built SoFi they didn't plan very well. They had disagreements with Stan Kroenke I believe over whether they could expand SoFi and I think that cost SoFi a chance to host the final.

Sounders and Seahawks do share Lumen Field. The Sounders hold the single game attendance record for the stadium at 69,274 for MLS Cup 2019. More than any Seahawks game. Last summer Taylor Swift at 72,171 and then Ed Sheeran at 77,286 set the record for any event. They get to fill the field.
SoFi stadium is *NOT* climate controlled. Despite the translucent roof over the top, the sides are open-air.

4:30 - our place is a bit crazy, but in a good way! The requirements given to the architects were from the owner of the NFL franchise here. He was married to a much younger woman at the time, saw her kids playing the game, and liked it. Not slighting the man - Atlanta has been the apex of soccer (English slang! Short for 'association football' in the 19th C) in the southeastern US since the 1960s. Phil Woosnam started the whole thing here, from youth football to the 1968 NASL Champ Atlanta Chiefs! Those of us who love the game had waited 25yrs for MLS to recognize us. And "Uncle Arthur" (Blank) delivered. I still claim the reason we don't have pro/rel in the US is because rich business folks don't pay this much for stadiums to have their club relegated.
Yeah, we share it with the NFL team, but there are separate changing rooms ("locker rooms" in US parlance) for MLS clubs, the seats in the corners retract so we can play on a full-sized pitch, but it's still kind of a tight fit. Supporters here sitting higher up in the stadium are used to looking up at 'the Halo' when a duel for the ball's going on in the corner, since the corners are out of view unless you're sitting down there. Other than that, it's very much like a big American football stadium with a terrarium over the top of it. Big glass panels that bring daylight inside and allow for great views of the city's skyline. We play on artificial turf, even with the roof open, there's not enough sun to keep grass alive. Local media reports that they'll bring real grass in for the Cup games, we're all abuzz about that. We were awarded a semi-final! Yeah, I'm already saving up for tickets.

Canada will switch from can and Vancouver teams are going to have three days between groups games so fans can travel and watch their teams if there any Canadian fans in New York they can go to Buffalo to Canada

MetLife Stadium is garbage. It’s run down, getting in and out of the parking lots is a nightmare. Even getting public transportation to and from the stadium is a nightmare. The food options are terrible, typical bad quality ballpark food, not a healthy option to be found. Restrooms are old and, let’s just call it unkempt. I went there to see Metallica last summer and was appalled by what is supposed to be a flagship stadium.
