I've been riding almost as long as you Guy and of all the brands I've owned (I've owned a lot!) I always have a soft spot for a Whyte. I regret selling my 905 V2 and get misty eyed thinking about my 46. Brilliant bikes especially for British conditions. This new one looks ace 👌
I’ve had 100mm cross-country Bikes 170mm Enduro bikes. I bought a T130 CRS it has been the best bike for me out of all the bikes I’ve had. Now I have an E 150 white ebike the T1 30 has now become basically a cross-country bike. I just run more pressure in the shocks with skinnier tires at 12 1/2 kg I don’t need to swap it for anything else, it does everything
The NX cassette is a mixed bag. Agreed it's a pain for upgrading as you would need to swap the freehub body at best or the full hub at worst. But on the flip side if you aren't bothered about upgrading you can pick up an NX cassette for half the price of a GX cassette and so it's great for people on a budget. And let's be honest the difference between the two is weight as opposed to performance. Ps great review as always 👍
Actually that’s a really fair point Joe. I think that’s more relevant on the entry level model though. People tend to hang onto to Whytes for a long time so I think upgradeability is more of an issue on the more expensive bikes.
Just stumbled across your review on this bike after doing some research on which trail bike to go for! Love for MTBing has returned after many years doing it before diverting to motorbikes, and after a recent ride on my 2006 S Works FSR Ive realised its time for a new bike. Have you ridden the Merida one-forty 700 to offer a comparsion? these 2 bikes are on my hit list. Great review!
Great review, I have the 27.5 version T140 sr v2 in small size and it doesn't disappoint. really nice to ride on the twisty stuff, nice to pedal and fun at the bike park too. what more can you ask for. over 500 miles and no issues except for some air in the brakes which a quick bleed fixed. One more thing. where are you riding? as it looks fantastic there.
Interested to hear what you think if this compared to the S-120.. I bought an S-120 CRS (off the back of your review and subsequent test ride) and have ended up increasing fork to Fox 36 Factory (140) and Float X rear shock now giving 130 rear and what a bike it is now..
TBH Chris, that SC120 was such a beaut all you’d be noticeably adding would be weight at the moment. I might change that opinion when the carbon T-140 come out, but presuming you’ve got your FX damper dialled pretty well and the increase in ride height isn’t too obvious then you’ve effectively created this bike yourself. Top work 👍🏻
@@GuyKesTV Thanks, the only reason I changed it was due to riding more technical trails (And Rock/Ard Moors/Innerleithen) than originally intended and feeling like the front SC fork wouldn't hold the line and the rear blowing through travel too quickly. Still working on tuning the shock in but getting there with it. If the T-140 had been out then I wold have definitely gone for that!
So...is this a heavy bike or have trail bikes just reached a new accepted weight of 15kg so that you do the odd enduro on em. Or has Guy just gone full "downcountry" and that is the real trail bike 🤔
I’m not sure myself TBH. 15kg seems heavy to me but I’ve tested trail bikes that weigh 16+ Even some of the bikes labelled ‘Downcountry’ are well over 14kg though.
@@GuyKesTV I was just curious, there seem to be a lot of good trail bikes that one paper look quite heavy but I suppose that is the price you pay for a frame that can take a bit of abuse. Interesting about the downcooutry bikes reaching 14kg+ as I hadn't realised that but I suppose it's the same issue. I'm not going to take any credit as it was the point you made on Downtime podcast: more travel cossets the frame so you can make a lighter bike. Does make me wonder if the T-160 is any cop as if you're going to have the weight should you just have the travel to go with it. Great review as ever though Guy!
Every single component has gotten bigger in dimensions during the last few years, so it makes sense bikes have gotten heavier. Rims are bigger in both diameter and width, hubs are wider, fork stanchions are 34-36mm on trail bikes, brakes are 4 piston by default and arguably today's riding style demands a bit sturdier tyres. Costs have increased a lot as well so brands trying to hit a certain price point will fit a heavy/budget item like the NX cassette here.
I’m trying to find the xd free hub body which fits this bike to change the cassette. Emailed whyte: they said I needed whyfhub20 whyfhub07. Unfortunately they don’t fit. Does anybody know what brand hubs are on this bike?

Love the sandwich analogy!! best video this week!!! Cheers
Cheers Andres, I nearly cut that bit 🤣

New Merida 140 is a bit heavier and slightly more enduro trail I think the Whyte is more lite trail and sporty
They seem to be such good value for money!
Subscribed cos your from Ilkley. Im in Thornton Bradford.
Betvyou got it from the awesome Chevin cycles
Always fancied a whyte but they’ve never offered shimano builds. SRAM really is a deal breaker for me
The lower spec S build is Deore 👍🏻
Same here. Anything below GX is dog shit. I’ve just ordered a Deore equipped S model, after watching this video about 6 times 😂

The T series bikes are always great fun. The review is shot at Stainburn Trail Centre in North Yorkshire 👍
Clearly it’s the BLT of trail bikes😆
Great vid chap, what size frame are you riding in this video? Cheers
I was on a large chief
@@GuyKesTV cheers pal
How does the S compare with its Rockshox suspension?

Thanks for the review, usual high quality. Sorry had very bad experience with Whyte 6 months ago and not a fan at all, very poor quality.
That’s disappointing to hear, they generally have a really good reputation.
Love thug sandwich 😂
