Thanks for sharing. I'm a palagi (person of European descent) who has a 'malofie' or more commonly termed 'pe'a' (traditional Samoan male tattoo) and while I believed that I couldn't and shouldn't get it, my adopted Samoan family and friends convinced me otherwise. Fearful of doing the wrong thing, I researched and spoke with my Samoan family as well as Samoan elders and cultural experts openly and at length. I learnt that within the Samoan culture the Tafuga ta tatau (master tattooists) are the ones who decide who should and shouldn't receive the pe'a or malu (traditional Samoan female tattoo); that it has always been their family's gift which they decide to share or not. I recognise and respect, however, that there is some disagreement with this. Despite not being Samoan, I have lived and continued to work and volunteer in the community. I will never truly know Samoan culture but will always be committed to my Samoan aiga (family) and community through my alofa (love) and ongoing tautua (service) to them. Manuia le aso tagata uma

There will be always disagreement no matter what. All because lack of knowledge this is why we go back to the Bible to learn and why is forbidden. Even tufuga or the tattooist or Wiseman in other words or witchcraft in evil practice because it is evil practice like c'mon now blood involve for culture. So it will always be disagreement but learn the fact that why? Ask that question why? Than you know why there is confusion.
God was never a God of confusion but Righteousness.

OK so here's my story. The majority of my family is Egyptian. However my father's mother is from Samoa. She died when my father was young and he didn't know much about the culture.
I have recently meet up with a group of Samoans in Toronto. We have a chief there who I have sat with and told my story about my grandmother to. He told me that he had no problem with me getting a tatau.
I'm conflicted because I have never been to Samoa, nor am I full verst in the culture. The more I learn of the culture, the people the food, the more I am grateful for my Samoan heritage.
My only concern is that some Samoans may feel that I shouldn't get a Tatau because of such a, small part of me is Samoan.
Another concern is that I cannot find a Samoan tatau artist in Canada.
    Thank you for your video.

I don't believe in using blood quantum to decide on how Samoan a person is. If you have Samoan blood you are Samoan full stop. That is my opinion. The fact that you are learning and that you want to learn more about your Samoan heritage is what you should be concentrating on. One thing I have learned in trying to find out what my identity as a Samoan is to me is that other people's thoughts on my Samoan identity are none of my business. Yes if I am speaking Samoan incorrectly or doing a Samoan tradition incorrectly it is important for me to do these according to culture and taking in corrections in that sense is necessary. How I feel about being Samoan and what I do to increase my connection to being Samoan is specific to an individual and what other people think about it shouldn't matter. If getting a tatau helps you feel closer and learning about the culture through tatu helps you, then do that.
I would suggest you follow some of the master Tattooist on social media as they travel around the world and could be in your area. You could even ask them to come to Canada.

Samoan culture goes back time of Ham which is the father of the Egyptians or African.
Pretty much tattoo comes from Egyptian.
And if you study the mummies they tattoo their gods on their body which that's exactly what it was.
The whole purpose is to impingement the gods in your body and your blood will goes to which demon that are behind those gods that comes from prince of darkness or principalities or the anunaki or the fallen angels that God cast out of heaven.
So the moment you tattoo your body you sign a covenant and agreement with this demons who bought this knowledge to Samoa from the twins.
In maori is Ta moko or the (mark) or means mark me. Question is mark me why and for who?
Now if you ask me for our culture, then comes second question where does our culture comes from.
If Egypt underworld god name Osiris who is Samoan underworld god because that's what maori believes where ta moko comes from.
But in Samoa is pulotu or Fiji or tonga. Wait so who is in the underworld. Bible speaks about fallen angels who are bind in chains in hell.
So why is still a disagreement? Understand Lucifer and you'll understand why there is confusion.

I wanted to get a malu but my mom said i cannot get one until I understand more about the Samoa culture and I am ready to take care of my family. She also said I would have to go to Samoa to do it and have a real tattoo person there do it and someone else has to get one with me? Also I have to wait until I am older because it is aginst the law here for a kid to have one here in America. I hope i can get one when I am 18. 😺 say hi to your son!

    • @MeasinaSamoa
      @MeasinaSamoa  Рік тому +1

It isn’t so much the taking part it is understanding the tradition behind it. I don’t go out and make kilts because I love Scottish culture. I wouldn’t get a tattoo with Chinese symbols. There are boundaries. Some people don’t care about the boundaries or understanding.

Am from Kenya and for a long time I've taken interest to know the samoan culture..the colonisation part is painful i get trust me because as kenyans we were colonised too and we don't joke about it..and i love the other cultures as well..for samoan culture its not just the tattoos its just how you do life.there is a lot to learn from you guys..just like any country anywhere in the world we have good and bad people..but it one's choice to embrace what's helpful or good that can help to build togetherness..i just love you culture madam and I've been longing to have a samoan tatoo..but am knowledgeable and respectful enough to ask for the meanings because i don't wanna walk around with a tattoos that i can't explain what it is...
You samoans are talented a lot,.so will it be offensive to tell my story so they can figure or up with a specific tatoo that suits my story, that way i don't have to copy and paste a samoan tatoo??
Once again i really respect your culture and hopefully some day i will be able to visit samoa and learn more..and thanks for your content its really helpful.

    West Papuan here
Sadly this happened to my ppl as well
Tattoo was actualy a part of our culture but ever since the colonizers came, the practice was banned. The last person in my family with traditional tattoos was my grandmother and even then she was still forced to hide it while some older people even tried to remove it.
Sad to know that my generation and the future generations of West Papua would never get these tattoo which has been a part of our identity pass down by our ancestors for many generations.

Tatau was supposed to be just for daughters of High Chiefs not for any ordinary girls. Bruh make this make sense. Its not for fashion or to boost your pride but it is for women who have that priviledge and rich with the aganuu.

I guess it could be compared to women getting a chief title? Didn't used to happen but it does now. Culture can change over time. As Samoans we are keepers of our culture it is our place to teach the generations today. Something that may be missing and a contributing factor?

Hey, I'm a aga kasi Samoan. Want to get a tatau. Because 1) I think it is beautiful and 2)because it is of my cultural heritage. I did think about the malu? What are your thoughts on Samoan born outside of Samoa, who aren't as connected to the culture as they should ideally be, but want to get a traditional tatau such as the pe'a or malu? Your thoughts are appreciated

What many don't realise is that there are more people with Samoan heritage living outside of Samoa than in Samoa. It is our job to make those connections to culture no matter how big or small. The decision to get a Malu is between you and your family, ultimately you. Do you feel getting it would strengthen your connection to culture? Have you done the work to undestand the meaning behind the tattoo and the patterns (mamanu)?

Thanks for the comment. I actually didn't want to comment because I know who you are referring to. I am pretty sure I stated in the video I don't think any palagi should get a malu/pea. I don't actually make the rules, because there are no rules. This is my opinion. You can go to another Samoan and have a completely different outlook on the situation. Culture is not set in stone. History is though. Our traumatic history of colonisation is still being felt in our people today. It is when palagi came and took what they wanted without regard to our people. When palagi take our tatau without knowledge of it's history, meaning or tautua it is like they are colonising us again. Obviously we have palagi who marry into the family and learn the language and culture and serve our family. We love them, but in my opinion they should find other ways to show their love of Samoa not through the malu/pea.
