Many people ask me what GCSE grades they need to get into Oxford or Cambridge. This video should clarify some things. In general, most students have mostly A*s in their GCSEs, but you don't need to have all A*s.
If you're an international student who hasn't done GCSEs, you can check the Cambridge website to see what their requirements are for your country:

Please stop commenting your grades and asking if you'll get in :)
You can watch this video or here's a quick summary:
    -you don't need all A*s
-multiple low grades (particularly in subjects relevant to what you want to apply for or important subjects like English and Maths) look bad on your application
-GCSEs are only a small part of your application
-resits don't look great on your application
-it is possible to get in even if your GCSEs aren't great, but most people tend to have around like 7A*s
-A-levels (or equivalent) are much more important
-you cannot predict whether you'll get in based on your GCSEs (people with all A*'s at GCSE might not even get interview and there's people with 3A*s who get accepted)
Bottom line: just apply anyway if want to get in because you might regret it otherwise.

Also, i had another question about your section on extenuating circumstances. I'm completely aware that you might not have all the answers, I'll just shoot my question anyways. If the pandemic severely impacted your mental health negatively and enhanced the effects of prior mental problems, would that count as as extenuating circumstance, if it hindered your ability to study/learn properly? Obviously this is all backed up by psychiatric records and three diagnoses, and is not just out in pseudoland haha

    • @IlyasCambridgeAdvice

I’m usually a straight 7 student but luckily I got a few 8’s but the fact I failed Latin and got a low English mark discouraged me, should I be studying Latin and English really hard or should I focus on all my subjects evenly for revision :/

hey ilya, I wanna ask like if cambridge look at GCSEs during our application, like would they count aqa l2 further maths (graded 9-4) the new spec first sat in 2022 which I sat in the gcse application because I know some selective schools unfortunately dont count that when applying and some schools would count that sadly, and I asked other people if aqa l2 fm sat in 2022 would count for the gcse calculations for cambridge, but I dont think I got a straight answer for that cos like what I wanna know is like I mean if cambridge counts aqa l2 fm in gcse calc when selecting applicants, if aqa l2 further maths is counted, I would say I got 5 9s, 4 8s, 7 and a 6, otherwise if aqa l2 fm not counted, it would have to be 4 9s, 4 8s, 7 and a 6 althouh in my statement of results, it says a 9 in aqa l2 fm so obviously it should count but it doesnt since its a l2 not exactly a gcse although l2 is equivalent to a gcse(definitely not a BTEC level). Say with my gcse grades I stated, and suppose I get predicted 4 A* and I apply to study cs at cambridge(although I got an 8 in gcse cs), what would my chances still be in going to cambridge? I do maths, fm, chem and phys and I would probably do some extra work by completing programmming courses during the summer or easter although I have prior knowledge of those.
I do sincerely apologise if that question annoys you as in the comments section, tonnes of people asked that sort of things, but if you can, would you tell me please about my predicted chance of computing at cambridge. I'm in year 12 btw.

GCSEs are just a part of your application, other parts like A-levels way more important. You've sat your GCSEs so nothing you can do about that so no point worrying about it. Focus on A-levels and doing extra stuff related to your subject (as well as being familiar with the application process).

    • @IlyasCambridgeAdvice
      @IlyasCambridgeAdvice  3 роки тому +16

I think it's really unhelpful to think of how many hours a day you should be studying for A-levels. There is no right answer. What's key is to study efficiently by doing active revision, and not just sit there and read notes. An hour of good studying is better than 4 hours of bad studying. And 4 hours a day for 2 months is probably better than 8 hours a day one month.
It was only in the few months before exams that I was doing serious levels of revision, and at the peak of exam season I was probably doing 6-8 hours a day on average, and I did study during weekends and holidays.
But like I said, it's not about how much time you study, but how you study.

Although your GCSE results will weaken your application a lot, the fact that your A-level grades aren't bad does help. Hi so I'm basically new to the UK and I just found out this year about college and the grading system and it literally made me went into panick mode .
Like I knew I had a few months to revise before I sat my gcse exams and it was so challenging because I had to sit for 11 gcses and like I missed out on alot of topics!
When it comes to the revision, I paid more attention to the important ones like English, maths and science because I feel like they were the most important ones when it comes to education.
And most of the subjects that I had to sit on like geography, R.E were new to me and we barely learned it in my school that the fact I really tried putting effort on those subjects aswell, but for me to revise 11 gcses in one sitting was very challenging for me.
And now that I just got my gcses results I'm quite disappointed cuz this is what grades I got :
    Combined Science : 3-3
    Photography : 2
    Geography : 1
    Spanish : 2
    Maths (foundation) : 2
    Citizenship Studies : 2
    English Language : 3
    Religious Studies : 2
    English Literature : 1
    Creative Imedia : U
The reason I got a U in creative Imedia was because I came late and they told me I don't need to take part in the exam so I didn't take part on it. I did quite well on my Science and English though and I was just almost a few marks of atleast getting a B..
I was just thinking of resitting my English and maths exam because they were the important ones when it comes to uni application. And since I've heard University Of Cambridge don't really take account on GCSE's , if I get a grade A*AA in my Alevels would I be able to do psychology in that University??
Because I want to become a psychologist in the future. I know I did bad on my GCSES but I want to take my resits so I don't look like a failure to the most important ones for Uni application? But if I do get a good grade in Alevel would they likely let me in and understand how my current situation was??

Anyone can apply. I guess what you mean is can you get in. Yes, you could, though your GCSEs are below average so that would weaken your application.

I sat AS-Level and A-Level as a private candidate because all colleges that offer me are Entry Level Functional Skills English and Maths, and entry level courses.
How's my GCSE and AS-Level result?
Why can't they only look at A-Level grades (A*A*A) but not my GCSE grades (GGUUUUUUU)?

GCSEs aren't explicitly required, you can use the qualifications you did in South Africa.

@@IlyasCambridgeAdvice My school only does 9 GCSE'S, so would this put me at a disadvantage compared to others who do more, or could take extra outside of school? Also, do you think GCSE'S would have less weight in the future application process as the exams were cancelled?

If you are only allowed to do 9 then that's understandable, you can put that in your application. I think that the admissions tutors will take the cancellation of exams into consideration as well.

I am 26, doing A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths now due to take exams in June, due to period of illness I had in the last few years.
My GCSE results from 2011 were:
    English Language A*
    English literature A*
    German A*
    French A*
    Religious Studies A*
    Business Studies A
    Maths A
    Core Science B
    Additional Science A
    Tamil C
I also have A Levels from 2013 in the following subjects:
    A Level English Literature A*
    A Level German A
Over the last 9 years after my A Levels in 2013 I have been working and currently working as Quality Analyst at Amazon. I am intending on applying for Medicine 2023 entry and would like to go to University of Cambridge.
I am aiming for A*A*A in my A Levels Biology, Chemistry and Maths that I will be taking June 2022 and ideally, hopefully get 3A* to apply for Medicine at Cambridge.
Do you think I can get into Cambridge as a mature student, if I get the required entry requirements for Medicine, in terms of my previous GCSE results and past study at college?

Your grades aren't bad but they're not the best, and Oxford is generally thought to put quite a bit of weight on GCSEs. It's also a bit strange you're doing 8 GCSEs (I'm guessing your school maybe limited you?). You could still get in but you'll probably have to do quite well in the rest of your application.
