Don't try to diagnose trailer lighting with trailer hitched and chained to tow vehicle. Only connect the electrical. You don't want to establish a false ground through the hitch.
I went to purchase a trailer today. The trailer lights either didn't come on, were intermittent, or flickered. It flickered as I was moving very slowly, and switching between drive and reverse moving only 1-2 inches. I noticed the tongue coupler was shedding lots of rust on my ball trailer hitch, in retrospect. I suspect either there's a bad ground on my car, or on the trailer. They tested the trailer 4 wiring harness with their mobile tool and it worked. I didn't pay for the trailer. I bought a circuit tester light and will try it on my 4 wiring harness tomorrow to see if it's on my side. I also bought another 4 wiring harness kit from Curt in case the first kit was faulty. Will refund it if I find out the ground wire is good on my current setup.
The existing plug that runs to my wiring harness for the towball/trailer wiring seems to be earthing across multiple wires...ie for the left and right brakes, lights, reverse etc etc. Any idea what that might be?
You definitely can but most wiring kits don't come with a long enough ground wire to reach the battery. You would need to purchase the extra wire of the same gage.
I'm working on a 2012 E450 just like Uhaul's DCs and TTs. Strong running lights and left turn signal out of the connector, but the tester blinks strong once or twice for the right turns/stops, then goes to being very weak. I've taken turns grounding to the pin and the frame, so I think it's strictly a right side power issue. Any suggestions anyone?
testing the ground to the tail lights, and its always on!! Lights on trailer do not go off on this vehicle. Trailer lights work perfectly on another truck. Why is the power always on to tail lights from this car???
So it should just be a wire for the ground thats loose somewhere? I wouldnt have to worry about any relays on the truck? Just check fuses and a ground wire to make sure all is well truck side?
Thanks, super helpful

Great tip! Thank you.
Take your 7 blade and smash it with a hammer every few months and replace

I got my hitch installed at uhual not to long ago and it’s blowing a fuse. I haven’t been able to hook up a trailer since it’s been installed
Schedule troubleshooting with the installation Location.
Thanks for video
I can’t see we’re you put tester. You didn’t show inside the plug.
Can you repost
Thanks
Can I take ground from battery terminal directly instead of the car body?

Visit your nearest Local U-haul hitch center to schedule troubleshooting with a local Hitch Pro.

It could be something else, but when something is wrong we check the fuses and ground first.
If you find a wire loose, you probably want to tighten it up.
