    Really nice video, all the information was really good and useful. Most probably the weight difference is on the gauge, of course assuming same Ti alloy, comparable dimensions and the number and sizes of the holes. The latter is more noticeable while comparing photos; this "lost" in material could lead to a significance difference on weight. Thank you for the demonstration!

    I have the Solo campfire model, and got a Japanese folding compact camp grill (Sho's) and a Lixada titanium alcohol stove. Of these I've used the Solo the most, mainly because I really haven't had the time to take them into the field, and because one of your videos showed me how to burn wood pellets in it. I expect the Sho's folding grill to perform very well with any fuel type and even behave like a windscreen for alcohol stoves. The Solo I'm thinking of just keeping around at home as a mini fire pit. Sure, I can cook on it, but cleaning off soot is a bit of a hassle, whereas with a butane/propane/alcohol stove or a charcoal fire I probably don't need to worry about that (unless I use a fuel that burns yellow). Totally not looking forward to cleaning the folding grill, but that comes with the territory.
    The fact that one has to invert and shake the Solo to clean out the ashes and unburnt pellets is a drawback to me. I kinda get it, the stove is much more sturdy this way, and less punishing to the ground, but still. The multipart stoves by Chinese brands seem to be much easier to maintain.

    The cross stands are an essential piece to use with the majority of wild campers, campers and backpackers use 300 - 350ml pots for drinks these would fall into these burners with out cross stands. That’s why they come with the cross pieces by the manufactures. So ignore these comments on them not used or not needed also the stuff sacks are great to stop your gear in a backpack getting pitted from the these stoves after use as they do get filthy over time.

    I have the small ti toaks stove which this is based off. I had to drill out the bottom holes of the burn chamber because it would just suffocate itself once it got to the point of having hot coals. I use it with just the two bottom pieces and a ti crossbar when I want to use a alcohol stove in it. I have that exact same pot with mine (but lixada). I do have to flip the lid upsidedown to make it fit with the toaks stove when nested. I also drilled out the center hole in the lid to fit a thermometer while doing boil tests.

    • @AtomicBleach
      @AtomicBleach 2 роки тому

      Also I carry like 10 fireplugs in the stove while storing it. Those things are awesome. The toaks is mostly heavier due to the burn chamber being lower and a much smaller feed port as well as the smaller holes in the bottom of the burn chamber (so more material)

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft

      @@MarkYoungBushcraft if Im using it in camp I often use it on top of my stainless folding vegetable strainer. This also doubles as a great grill top for this stove. At least with mine the top of the toaks stove matches perfectly with the bottom of my strainer. The strainer, since it has very small holes acts as a heat diffuser and will make perfectly toasted bread.

I believe I used a 20oz can of Dole pineapple slices.

    Asking for a re-visit to this stove please. The burn chamber was right on. The alcohol pot stands was perfect. I'm asking in the configuration could you do a top "burn down" with hardwood? A almost "Swedish fire torch".
    I'm thinking it should work but than again it maybe too much at one time. This will be my final stove. Going with the Toaks because it is smaller for packing. Just don't have the $$ to justify the purchase yet. Lol

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  2 роки тому

      I have done a top-down burn with sticks many times using the stainless-steel version (with videos). The trick is to not fill it with sticks that come above the holes at the top and not too compacted. I don't own a Toaks version but I have heard complaints that the height of the base is so low it is very easy to unintentially bury it in soil. Bets to use on a hard surface or carry a metal bottom plate.

      @@oldbatwit5102 Agreed. However, in this case, you can often do both things. For example, if the cotton ball with PJ is partially submerged under the tinder or pellets, it can light adjacent wood and some finer shavings placed on top of the already light cotton ball.

    I bought the Lixada Ti tower stove last winter and love it. Like you, I have a lot of stoves and enjoy them all. This one is great. Light. Very functional. I carry mine in a 1L Ti pot from Lixada. The lid sits a little loose when all packed up (nested), but the stuff sack keeps it all together. I keep the Lixada Siphon stove clone in that kit and use the top section with it just like you demonstrated with your alcohol burner. I don't take it backpacking much (Firebox Ti Nano is usually in that kit), but I do take it often for weekend outings. Great setup. Easy to keep a good burn for a long time. I prefer it over my Solo Lite as the burn chamber is larger and it takes less refueling to keep it going.

    Twice now I’ve heard you say “I don’t really think you need to use these crossbars, I really don’t think they are necessary.”
    Please do the demonstrations with all parts in use with all stoves, and let the viewer decide if they want to use all the parts.
    For instance, I found in both cases that there was less smoking when the pot was placed on the stove if the crossbars were in place.

      Yes, but I am not a fan of Swedish Torches in small stoves. For me, it means finding a dead standing tree, or very dry fallen tree, of the right diameter and cutting a section of just a few inches in length, then splitting it into four quaters. I prefer, and often do, fill my stoves with sticks set in vertically, then build a fire on top. It will burn faster and hotter than a Swedish Torch but is much easier to prepare. Also,more inline with my philosophy for using small stoves. Thanks for commenting

    What did you mean by that cylindrical stoves don't work?

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  2 роки тому

      I apologize for any confusion. What I meant to say is round or cylindrical stoves don't warp. They don't loose their shape from the heat. . Even more accurate would be to say they barely warp when compared with straight sided stove. Hope this helps

    The stainless version looks big enough to fit the swedish army 3 crowns alcohol stove,(made by trangia)its bigger round and in height than the standard trangia, doesn't come with(dont think one is available) a simmer lid,

      I wanted to try this out before responding. Yes, the military alcohol stove fits perfectly. Thanks for commenting

      You will need a pot of at least 150mm in diameter. A normal 750ml pot is to small. It fits perfectly in my Fire Maple FROST 0.9L pot. Hope this helps

    Can you tell me what the diameter of the burn chamber is? I want to know if I can nest a toaks 450ml cup in it, which is 85mm wide when folded

      The inside diameter of the smallest chamber is 79mm. The outside diameter is 84mm. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting

    Have You trued a scout firebox stove ? In My humble opinion it's
    the best of the lot ( firebox family )
    so far ( for use with sterno & achol
    use indoors for emergency , and , let's be honest , to play with , to heat
    caned goods & noodles ) . It needs the pins , but , not necessarily the cross stand . To elevate either a achol stove ( Mine is homemade )
    or a can of sterno , I used a top off
    a progresso soup can with the pins
    ( I think a 4" can lid would be perfect
    but ,I haven't tried one yet ) . I haven't
    built a fire in My stove ( and doubt I
    ever will ... I have other's for that ) .
    But , for , an emergency stove that can be used inside , with either achol
    or sterno it works extremely well .
    If You want to find out how flame able a terry cloth bath robe is try to
    blow out a can of sterno in this stove
    ( don't ask how I know this , know what I mean ?! ) !!!!

      Sounds like an interesting story you have there😉. I have not purchased the FB Scout yet. I don't yet see it as something I would like or is any better than an Ikea Hobo stove. I may change my mind though. FB is coming out with another stove before long that does interest me. Thanks for commenting
