    My great grandfather Donald Davis was the lead mold maker and Wagner for over 30 years. I still have many of his cast iron pots and pans and music creations. I also have a few wagner mold blanks that I will keep forever !

    I picked up a skillet today and I think it's a pretty old Wagner.The Wagner logo is straight not curved, the handle is curved, not straight. The logo is near the handle, not across from it. I'm going to run it through the clean cycle of my oven, hopefully the Wagner imprint will be more visible. So excited to find this today, paid 12 bucks. I already used the oven cleaner in the bag trick, the Wagner was totally obscured by the layers of seasoning.

    My mother just gave me an old (10" I think) cast iron skillet. I'm 53 and she's had it longer than I've been around. I'm not sure of the manufacturer, the only marking I see is on the bottom and it looks like a faint 80. It does have a heat ring on the bottom but I'm not sure if it's as pronounced as your Wagner pans. It's hard to tell at the moment because it has quite a bit of seasoning/carbon build-up on it, especially around the heat ring area and the middle on the bottom. I'm going to strip it down to bare cast iron or close to it and re-start the seasoning process on it, maybe I'll uncover some other markings. The seasoning is pocked and gouged here and there and there's a rubbed off patch on the outer side of the pan, probably where it's been moved around so much over the years and different things set inside of it like other cast iron etc etc. Mom didn't use this pan very often so it never really had a chance to re-build seasoning on it, especially where it's been scratched and pock marked because she has another cast iron skillet that she used regularly and still uses.
    I'll try to see if I can uncover more markings on it soon when I strip it.

      I don't have any personal experience with glasstops but a lot of people use cast iron on them. As long as you don't drag the pan around and scratch the top, apparently it doesn't cause any problems.

    Great videos !!! I love Wagner Cast Iron and want to learn as much as I can about it. I especially like the older skillets with the outside heat rings, Dutch ovens, and lids. I wish you could do videos on 10 & 12 inch Dutch ovens and their lids and basting drip point patterns. Good Lids are very hard to find and frequently cost more than the oven. Also hard to find oven with its original bail handle. Many are sold with replaced or modified handles.Thanks for this video. I look forward to learning more from your videos.

    • @TheMudbrooker
      @TheMudbrooker  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, cast lids are tough to find, but glass lids are a good alternative if you can't find one. Know what measurement you need and hit the second hand shops, they usually have quite a few. Lids with a molded in knob are best, ones with a separate plastic knob aren't always oven safe. You might even get lucky and find a Wagner or Griswold marked glass lid. For cast lids a #8 Lodge lid fits quite a few different skillets and dutch ovens. They still make them but last time I checked they were still back ordered. A lot of times though you can find a newer Lodge dutch oven with a lid fairly cheap and while the logo has changed, the lid itself has been the same for the last 70 years or more.

    • @moderntentcamping
      @moderntentcamping 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheMudbrooker I especially like Wagner 10 inch 5 quart Dutch ovens (1283 I think) and have discovered that 10 inch Lodge lids fit perfectly. So I have 3 of them. Two with flat lids that I use for camp baking and one with a domed lid. You can find lids at Lodge factory outlet stores but 10 inch flat lids are very hard to get.

    • @TheMudbrooker
      @TheMudbrooker  2 роки тому +1

      The main reason is scarcity, they were only made for a couple of years (late 20's or the early 30's, nobody is quite sure) so there aren't many around. Also, they're cooler looking than the average Wagner so there's a strong demand. Low supply+high demand= high price.

    In your "economy" section you showed a National with the fancy logo in the center with National at the top. I just ordered one just like it except there is no catalog number, but just a size number at the 6 oclock position, number 8. Would it be a safe bet then that this is pre 1924?

    So when does the Magnalite come into play? Are they just cast iron too and if not how do they differ?
    How many Magnalite size/ styles/types of pans/skillets/pots were made?

      Wagner made cast aluminum since the company started in 1892, but Magnalite is a brand name of cast aluminum that Wagner started making in the 1930's. There were tons and tons of different styles and items.
