I love how pissed people are that a band who (eventually) got big by doing whatever the hell they wanted are doing whatever the hell they want. When the riff drops back in after Lyxzen's 'Kill kill kill, go!' it's beautiful. I'd listen to Sandstrom drum on anything.
Vincent J Ives NO REFUSED ARE MY BAND BECAUSE I LIKE THEM AND THEY HAVE TO DO WHAT I WANT OTHERWISE THEY'RE GAY SELLOUTS. WE ARE THE FANS AND WE OWN THEM AND FANPANDERING IS THE ONLY WAY TO AVOID BEING GAY ASS SELLOUTS /angry hardcore kids.
I love how people dislike this song but this is such a Refused song. Since "The Shape of Punk to Come" they've expirimented with mixing in other styles with thier music. "Deadly Rhythm" is clearly jazz and hardcore. "New Noise' is definately techno and hardcore. This song is a mix between pop and hardcore. It's what they do, they expiriment with blending other genres with hardcore.
Honestly, even if the sound is not "punk" or "hardcore", those lyrics are more punk rock than most of the punk bands out there now. This song is brilliant.
Refused are pushing their art-punk limits on this album, and that's not a bad thing. It shows that they're not just content to rehash old ideas. It's gonna be hit and miss, sure, and a lot of people will hate it. But that's what makes them who they are. Remember how hated they were when they dropped The Shape of Punk to Come in the late 90s? Alienating hardcore kids has always been their thing.
Philip Whitehead maybe you are right. as always there is no point in flaming about music genres. But when you say that your band is dead for an entire "last" concept album, maybe it's "rather be dead"
I don't think they anticipated how fucked the world would be by 2012 and with their considerable influence which emerged post-break up (remember part of the reason they broke up was because of how badly people treated them at gigs e.g. "YOU LOOK LIKE THE FUCKING BEATLES"), they probably felt both the drive and the demand to come back, which they would never have anticipated in 1998. It's hardly a cash grab either cos Epitaph aren't exactly a huge label. If they'd gone to RCA/Nuclear Blast/Universal/Sony then you could call them out but they didn't, they stuck with the label that had faith in them when nobody else did back in the 90s.
Philip Whitehead the thing is the shape of punk to come, if not entirely original, was at least doing shit a lot of people hand't heard before. this is doing things we have heard before and not doing them particularly well. I don't mind them experimenting, I just don't think this is a good song.
BEST FUCKING BAND EVER! You guys hability of rethink yourselves is impressive, this TINC 60's vibe, the kids, the vocals, loved it, thank you guys, for real!
Does this sound like old Refused? No. Do I still freakin' love it? Very much. It is a very The (International) Noise Conspiracy kind of vibe. I'll take it.
heavy, melodic, tight with classic Refused rhythm, screaming for a cause, a voice to be heard, the end is the best, the drums are just huge and guitars are wide open, everything has it's perfect space, they always know how to get it done correctly, both songs so far have been nothing short of what I expect from talent like this, Refused just find a way to take their unique funky off rhythms and somehow make them accessible, magic
refused are great ... i love this song so much ... its not as hard as "flame to" but the songwriting is groovy and the strength of "shape" was its varity of songs. I´m really forward for more. When i started to listen to refused i was young, around 16, now (14 years later) i´m grown and i appreciate grown music, which is well written. It´s not like Muse or Rise Against - their´re later release were a little bit of dissapointing, but still allright, but after i now the other projects of dennis, i expect, he will deliver and kick ass as always. It was always about Heart, Soul and Music.
Am I the only one that things this song is fucking amazing? I don't understand why people are bent out of shape over it. It's been almost twenty year since they've released an album... Obviously it's not going to sound like their old stuff
Saw this performed at punk rock bowling. Performance was awesome with tons of energy. Elektra sounded very much like they were sticking to their shape of punk to come sound. This song shows they're experimenting with new directions. Can't wait to hear the rest of Freedom.
Whilst I agree that this isn't their best work, it seems that 90% of the comments on here are from people wanting to here another bunch of songs that would have been at home on The Shape of Punk to Come. This song sounds like Refused growing up and wanting to try and do things different, not in the same angry, gritty, high energy way they use to do. Some people can't accept change...
This is exactly what happened with The Shape of Punk to Come: the die-hard uncompromising fans of the previous album (and musical style) cry murder as Refused continue to push the barriers of their own music. Fucking fantastic. See you in the pit.
I like it a lot. People act like this isn't the same forward thinking band that left us years ago. The same band that released The Shape of Punk to Come.
While this song IS a bit weak, it shows this band isn't going to release an album filled with safe songs. They are gonna release a varied album, which is exactly what we should expect from a new Refused album. They are still experimenting with music, and that's a good thing. Plus I see this song being a grower.
What did you expect? Them to completely replicate The Shape of Punk to Come? Sonically it sounds really interesting, not like anything else out there at the moment, they're still writing things critical of society and pushing boundaries. Definitely shown a lot of variety between just this and Elektra, can't wait for the album to drop. Refused are fucking dead, long live Refused.
So many whiny comments. Suck it up. They can do whatever they want, it's their band. I like moments of Refused. Can't say their entire catalog is great. I like that they're doing something different. It doesn't sound like anyone else out there right now does it? I don't agree with flagging them as selling out. I don't think they're trying to write hits. Seems like their reunion tour went really well and now they feel like making music again. Amazing how we will shit on people for doing such a thing.
PJ I haven't read it but I'm also someone with a brain cell that knows what makes these guys tick musically and they've never settled. Art punk is a much better way to describe them than hardcore or post-hardcore.
PJ ive read it before i heard this song, but it doesnt change my opinion about this song. the problem is not a different sound, but that this song is lame "stadium rock" as someone wrote before. we are talking about refused and not about justin bieber or something where "fans" don´t care about music. i dont think that dennis lyxzen et al start to cry if somebody criticising ONE of their new songs...
All the haters of this song are not true fans of Refused and possibly have never gottin it in the first place! They will continue to punch you in the face with music and message and they don't give a fuck about what you think they should say or sound like.
I see them live at the burning heart tour I think it was 1998 sorry I can not exactly remember playing at the RockHouse and they blown it up. Amazing live Band
French imperialism in africa was bad. The thing is, 99% of the references in this song deal with the *BELGIAN* Congo under King Leopold II and later Mobutu Sese Seko. France did it's share of bad things, but the belgian congo was ALL BELGIUM. This song specifically calls out Paris. It's really, really dumb. Like a high school book report that blames Canada for the massacre at Wounded Knee.
@@EttSistaOrd This is how this bashing is resolutely stupid, because it is a different country ! Mobutu, Rwandan Civil War and genocide, fall under en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo
The Sven Lindqvist book "Exterminate All the Brutes" might have partially inspired this song - it goes into French (and other) imperial crimes like the Chanoine-Voulet mission.
i actually liked it from the beginning. Of course I thought that it sounded diffrent but after half of the song I already really liked it and i think i'll like it more the more i listen to it!
Really enjoyed this. And agree with some of the previous comments. A few nods to INC. It is a grown up Refused. There is still a pointed political dimension, and smart songwriting. No doubt this will butt hurt all the punk as fuck contingent. Which is a great thing.
Homp Nomp That's the only think keeping me hooked on it tbh. Love Noise Conspiracy so it's nice to have that kind of flavour in the mix. I really hope this album is gonna be good, but I've got a feeling it's going to be a total let down.
Michael C Aye, can't agree more- mostly down to growing out of refused (for lack of a better explanation), I can usually have new noise, maybe tolerate a couple of other songs from back in the day- mostly they get skipped. Noise conspiracy, yeah I still have a lot of time for them.
I get a feeling a lot of Refused "fans" only listened to them because it's "hardcore, man!" and it gives them a reason to get a nose ring and thrash around their parents suburban basement mindlessly. Listen to these lyrics and the general bite of the song. Talking about French colonialism through the eyes of a historically oppressed continent is "stadium rock" or "radio rock" to you?? Name ONE stadium rock song that addresses issues like this....I dare you. If you listen to Refused solely for the "hard" riffs and ignore the message and lyrics behind the art, you're better off listening to Disturbed or some shit. It's railing against the French colonial policy in France, where they basically used the African nations under their sway as ATM machines to steal their wealth, resources, and murder anyone who stood in their way.

Just Another French Girl = france + afrique (africa)
