The hydrant i repaired was leaking from the packing nut, so I opted to replace the O-rings first. (There was no leak when the handle was in the down, off, position.) Turns out the top O-ring was removed w/ difficulty, and since I could not budge the (impacted) lower O-ring, I decided to chance it and replace only the top. I used Teflon tape on the packing nut. Guess I got lucky b/c the "cheater" repair did the trick. No more leak! Time will tell if my short cut repair has legs. I used the Simmons 850SB hydrant repair kit. TY DIYguy.
Every hydrant I took apart, the rod would not lift out since the rubber plunger swelled to a larger diameter. Had to use a 1970’s car jack and screw a rod with washers to the rod and a chain to jack it out. It took 1000’s of pound of force to jack it out, bending the jack. The rubber detaches and then turn on the water and shove the rod in to work the detached rubber plunger out of the tube. Never had one just lift right out.
I read you post AFTER I went through the same steps to remove the rod. I'll try your method of getting the rubber plunger out as I had NO CLUE as to how I was going to get that out of there. Got my fingers crossed!

In this situation, always use a backup. Yes, the instructor mentioned using one but proceeded w/o one. I cringed when he started to unscrew. Good video. Thanks for sharing.
The only missing from this excellent video is what do you call the black/brass RUBBER THING that needed to be replaced? Sure would like to buy one before taking the hydrant apart and leaving it open while I go to the hardware store! Or - do they come in sizes then I'd need to take it to the store with me! (or is it part of the "rebuild" kit)??
I just fixed my first hydrant after watching a few of these UA-cam videos to get confidence. In hind sight the head didn't have to be removed, I actually couldn't get it off. I realized the rubber plug fit thru the threaded hole the larger fitting goes. I was able to remove that replace the rubber stopper and rebuild it. It may have been even easier than that. This hydrant is just a few years old. Examining the rubber stopper showed it was fine but I learned more how it worked. My symptom was not leaking but lifting and lowering the handle was very difficult. Now that I did all these steps I think a little WD40 on the rod was all I had to do. I'm sharing to help others learn from my experience. The head didn't have to come off, rubber plug fits thru fitting hole and check the rod for rust, may just need to lube it
Awesome video! I'm virtually certain my issue is with the packing nut and failed o-rings but I'm having a hell of a time getting that packing nut to loosen! But at least I know how it all is put together and I can keep tinkering with it. Thanks!
No problem, Glad we could help. You might want to spray it down with some penetrating oil over the course of a few days so it can soak in. I use and have had good luck with Kroil. Need a bit more details. Is is leaking out of the head/handle where it attaches to the stand pipe? Leaking out of the handle plunger? or do you hear it leaking below grade/ ground level?

Where can one get a plunger rod ?
In some cases you may need 2 pipe wrenches, as the pipe may twist off down below.
You are correct that can happen.. We did mentioned it at the 2:00 -2:10 mark.
