However, the 90 degree angle of the penlight makes it easy to clip to the outside of a shirt for a handsfree work light/reading light. I love the extra weight, and the bolt is in a convenient and fidgety location.
I often find multitools interesting either as a socially acceptable way to have a knife in public or as a piece of engineering. When I carry a multi-tool, pocket prybar /bottle opener, or something like that, I tend to think of it as an extra piece of gear rather than as a specific tool like a pen or a flashlight.
SwissChamp is the ideal vacation tool. I’ve cut off a jammed suitcase padlock, refitted a very (deliberately?) insecure window lock, and mended numerous air bnb fittings, all of which could have otherwise ruined my day - and opened numerous wine and beer bottles which always makes my day better. I have never needed that fish descaled/ruler thing though....
I really have to agree with you on most every point. I do find myself carrying the Open regularly because it simply is more convenient than my full size warrior mini during the daytime. I think they shot themselves in the foot not having Lockout as a standard features on this tool
I personally see no need for multiple flashlights to carry. One should suffice in doing the job you bought it for. So no need for a "backup" light. I have multiple smaller AAA lights and a couple of small rechargable lights I can pick from to take in my pocket along with my backpacker ink pen. Both do the job as intended and no need for "backup" .
I love Olight, edc-ed the mini-baton for Years now, but I agree. The pen/light combo would for me just be another way to show my love for Olight which I already do through my daily carry and the morale patch on my backpack, which is surely seen plenty and shows my love for the brand without impacting my pen carry.
I like EDC in theory, but I hate having a bunch of things in my pockets. More often than not I'll only carry some of my EDC things and leave others at home. I carry a pen AND a flashlight maybe 2-3 times a year. I always thought that the pen/flashlight combo was cool, but I never saw it done very well. The Open seems to be a reasonably well done solution. I appreciate its existence.
I sort of feel like the Swisschamp undermines the message of this video. It's probably the most awkward multitool/multi function knife i ever handled, so seeing it in the 'good multitasker' column is more than a bit weird.
The swisschamp kinda comes off as this weird "functional Gimmick" deal to where it can be used but its more of a "look how many swiss army knives we crammed into this!" kind of feel
Most people who get the Swisschamp end up just using it to help decide which tools they really want and which they don't really need, and from there they find the smaller Swiss Army Knife that's right for them. An expensive way to go about things, but hey, helps keep Victorinox in business I guess. lol And I'll defend the 2-5 layer Swiss army Knives all day. MacGyver proved how useful every implement on a basic SAK can be. I'd rather have one of those plus a pair of dedicated pliers thrown in my EDC bag than carry a full-on plier-based multitool.
@@Pinki2019 True i suppose the swiss champ is an option for people to test the waters of what they want but eh as you said its an expensive option but people are willing to buy it so i guess more power to them. Then again not every tool is for everyone so i suppose i'd say the champ isn't quite for me but i can see its purpose.
They should have just made an “O-pen” and added a free i3T EOS with every pen but since they’re Olight the pen had to have a light on it... That said, if these don’t sell I bet they will be a big part of flash sales in the future lol.
Wow. Cannot agree more! I have a SOG pen Multitool that is probably the worse designed one I’ve every seen. Fairly nice scissors though lol. Also agree with the idea that the tool you have with always beat out the tools you don’t. Thanks for the deep thoughts!
As a warehouse midnight shift worker, a leatherman wave+ and dedicated knife go a long long way to getting shit done and maintaining other things needed todo our job
My brother got the special edition copper O-pen. He has a belt holster for carry so he gets to carry a flashlight and pen in one pouch, and he can use it as a hands free light with the clip.
My favorite multitools end up being the keychain tools (Leatherman Style PS, Gerber Dime, some small SAK) or SAKs themselves. I like having the precision pliers. Way more useful to me than a full pair of pliers when I'm out and about. Full sized mulititools, I usually leave in my backpack or on my tinkering desk
It's got one feature neglected here: it's a good "tacti-pen", meaning you could really inflict some damage with it if necessary. When you combine *that* with the light option it makes a little more sense as an EDC pen / light combo. Not a lot more sense but a little. I still wouldn't personally carry one but I'd put it on my car's sun visor for sure. I do carry two small Olights every day, a tiny one on my keyring & another larger one in my pocket. But I prefer a dedicated pen for EDC writing tasks even though I have a pen in my tiny Victorinox which also rides on my keychain.
I got my wife this pen for her work, she is an electronic assembler (transformers, generators, etc.) on an industrial level. The 1st day the refill exploded in her hoodie pocket, apparently this is a known issue with the 1st generation refills. I ordered the upgraded refill(for free from Olight) and she tried it again, so far so good, but she says it's too top heavy and awkward to write with. It is apart now and she uses the flashlight as a stand alone light.
I am by no means a multi tool kinda guy, but in my experience I’ve found that they only make sense of all of the functions are relevant to one another. If it’s a complex tool designed to complete many kinds of tasks involved in a single job, the loss of specialized tools seems a little more justified. For instance, I’m looking at getting the 9-in-1 Swiss Army Knife made by Mercury because it has most of the tools I use for gardening in a compact package.
I added the Knipex Cobra XS to my EDC. In a slip sheath it is easy to carry and a great pair of pliers, Which is the best part of a (heavy) Leatherman.
Experience proves that only two main types of multi-tools work: swiss army knives and pliers, and they still require quality and good sense. Taking several functions in odd platforms may create ducks.
I'm glad you brought up Leatherman pliers, I absolutely despise Leatherman pliers. I have genuinely never understood the appeal of Leatherman tools outside of a few very specific careers.
@@loganholmberg2295 I have a one hand trekker but it doesn't get much use. Not a fan of multi-tool pliers in general because they are so heavy for such a specific use tool, and generally because the folding mechanism jeopardizes the ability to effectively use them. I know Gerber has one that slides open but with Gerber build quality it's probably 50/50 on whether or not you get a good one. And once again it's a very big tool just to carry for an effective set of pliers and some knives and other trinkets. in almost any scenario it's much more beneficial to just get a real set of pliers from harbor freight and just a decent pocket knife. It'll probably be cheaper too.
If the clip wasn't so stiff, it would be decent for travelling. I wanted to bring it on the plane except it takes me 3 minutes of fiddling to get it clipped in my jacket pocket. That light is perfect for finding stuff I dropped under the plane seat. Which is 90% of what I use a light for when travelling.
Hi Nick! I have to say, I really like O light products and I do kind of dig the pen. I’m a flight nurse at Rady Childrens here in SD & something like that is perfect for in flight uses. I do realize my job itself does fit into a niche category. There aren’t too many of us out there, so the pen/light fits right in😆
I work in a secure facility with no windows and I bought this combination pen light to help with dark areas. I thought it would help with opening and documenting access. The problem was that my shirt pockets were not deep enough to secure this combo device with the clip. I quickly went back to separate pen and light.
Seems like it was designed to sit reversed on the outside of your pocket so you could use the light hands free. Most pockets would not have enough support
Multitaskers are always, always a compromise. Where that becomes an issue is when the compromise is no longer acceptable. The pen torch combo thing is a good example of a bad compromise. A Lumintop Tool AAA flashlight with a Bullet Space pen would be roughly the same size but, arguably, work much better.
I actually had a great pen with flashlight... it was a advertisement gift, and the light was at the tip of the pen (red LED, it was 10 years ago). However, it worked perfectly fine for writing in the dark.
Uncle Nick I agree, but along the line of 1 is none I keep the open in my pocket and a a dedicated pen and light backup in my pack for the reason of pocket space. I would rather have more room for knives than something I don't don't use as often but would definitely not walk away from my bag without.
Thank you for making this video. It had to be said. Multi-tools suffer from the same thing when each tool has multiple functions, to some extent. Too bad, though, that pen is nice looking and would probably make a nice dedicated pen.
I don't know... The product seems fine to me? Obviously if you spend all day writing or in dark places you'd have a dedicated pen or flashlight. This seems like something you chuck in your bag in case you need it. Not something I'd buy, but it seems useful to have if you don't want two separate items rattling about. Could be a good idea to have one in the car, now that I think about it.
@@charlesburow8120 believe the standard leatherman wave blade steel is 420hc and in some rare cases you can find aftermarket blades but the only ones i've seen have been in s30v
I see what the problem is: There needs to be a knife blade and a cap lifter on that flashlight pen in the next version, and a kydex to carry it tactically.
A toothbrush that launches grenades or a grenade launcher that launches toothbrushes? I mean either one sounds fantastic but one is probably more dangerous than the other, unless you are plaque. :)
I like your Swisschamp! That is a useful multitool! I actually EDC that as my knife as where I live single-handed lock blades are not legal here. I carry a parang/ machete or fixed blade when hiking! I personally wouldn't buy the combo light and pen, I carry a pen similar to a Parker pen and a small flashlight. Liked the video.
I have a Leatherman Squirt PS4 and it stays on my keychain along with a small utility blade and pry tool which stays with me all the time. I also have the Leatherman charge+ and I find it to be a complete replacement for a pocket knife or a pair combination pliers, even when I'm just at home. I keep a victorinox classic in my wallet, which I mainly use the nail file and scissors on, because those on Leatherman tool roll over a lot. There is a little situation with the laws here, which is that they don't exist, so I have to be extra careful when using anything in public, which is why I prefer carrying tiny keychain knives that nobody sees. Also, I just use my phone's flashlight but keep a lumintop tool aa in my backpack if I need it. The pocket clip on it is so bad that it's not worth carrying. Pen? Idk never needed one, and whenever I need to sign something I'm always provided with one. I got my phone for taking notes, it easier and faster than writing by hand.
A pen/light combo is great tool for anyone in the medical field. We often need to check a patient’s pupils using a low power penlight and a pen is, well... A pen.
My wife is a nurse so I thought the O pen was gonna be perfect for her. She still hasn't used it. Even with the gel inserts it now comes with she still won't use it.
Multi tools are always tempting. Then I realize I’ve received 4 different ones as gifts and never use any of them. Even with a carry case, I’m just not a fan of carrying them. I’ve had one in my glove compartment in my truck just in case but have never needed it.
Nick would you please do a review on the Knipex (Germany) 5 or 6 inch COBRA pliers that people are using for EDC? Some folks are saying that paring one of these Knipex COBRAs with a plier-less multi tool (SAK Super Tinker for example) is superior to even a high end Leatherman...
Multitools are there when you need them because you won't carry your pliers with you everyday but that leatherman may be carried everyday... As they say, the best tool is the one you have with you when you need it...
Nick the penlight is what it is personally it’s an item that is better kept in your EDC pouch for an emergency from what you’re saying it just is not the every day pocket item but An EDC packable item
Swisschamp on my hip every day, as I repair medical equipment. Literally use every tool minus the tweezers and wood saw at least once a week. My LM Wave sits at home.
Have a pen / light combo would never be a substitute for me carrying a really nice compact edc light and my go to pen (zebra f701). I've never seen the need for a combo of those two things. Neither of them alone are cumbersome enough to carry where combining them is .. worthwhile? Now pliers and a knife, yea I see the need for that combo. If you work outdoors/with your hands/etc. having pliers or a knife in a pinch, is priceless.
Its quite a chunky pen and the light is handy..... But also because of the robust all metal construction this pen can be used as a rather effective defensive Kubaton esque weapon.
My pocket and belt space on a daily basis are limited. I don’t have the option of carrying a gear bag backpack or some kind of rolling cart with everything I might need to survive a day. This kind of combination tool isn’t as good as caring two tools but it sure does fit in the second sleeve side of my Leatherman pouch.
To quote LGR's review of cheesy 90's fps game Isle of the Dead: "It's a jack of all trades, master of none... In fact it's not even a 6 of all trades and a novice of none, it's just not really much of anything"
Multi tools are a good compromise for emergency or quick fixes. A pen and light combo is not a good compromise on either front imho. However my wife would probably think it is the coolest thing in the world. All sizzle no steak to me.
I just made the comment on another forum that I really never use multitools. I just use tools. Very rarely do I only have the option of a multitool. Tools at work, tools at home, tools in my car. What do I need with a multitool? I probably have seven of them.
@@Thomasnmi tell me about it. I have seven of them! I'm not saying people shouldn't like them or use them. Just that when given the option, your gonna reach for a dedicated tool vs a multitool.
I think this is a great idea, but I won’t switch to it solely because I’m too attached to my streamlight microstream and bolt action pen I’ve been using for years. But I carry both clipped in my left pocket
I use min as a backup and its a great walking flashlight from your shirt pocket. Pen is not anything really special which is why people really into pens don't like it so much IMO. A jotter is defiantly better but its not as fun as this is. 😅
Do you have one? I found Its defiantly better than my Note 9. Plus using your phone as your flashlight is a terrible idea IMO. Its handy in a pinch but your wasting allot of battery life that I'd rather have on my phone for calls and stuff in a situation that matters.
I could actually see that pen/light being useful for me once and a while, as a concept at least haha. I'm an engineer and work for a consulting company, pretty regularly we go out to survey an area we'll be doing some work at. In the last year and a half there's been several times I was in places where the lighting wasn't great (mechanical rooms at a hospital, and a handful of mechanical rooms on an air force base). I'm typically walking around with a big 11x17 clipboard to hold my sketch, so having a light built into the pen I'm sketching with, it could be handy. I wouldn't have to put the pen away, fish the light out, then vice-versa. I hate setting things down when I'm out surveying because there's too high a chance I'll walk off and leave it there and never see it again haha. All that said. I don't think this is a great execution, and I'll stick with individual tools. I don't use the light often enough to justify the disadvantages of having it on the light (can't use my favorite cartridge, awkward weight balance). FWIW I typically have a TactileTurn bolt action pen (easy to get in/out of pocket and deploy/retract the cartridge, the grip from the texturing is super handy) as my main writing instrument, a Machine Era classic brass pen in my back pocket as a back up (it pockets super easy) just in case I drop the Tactile Turn and it lands on the cartridge tip (it's happened!). I've got an Olight as well in a jacket breast pocket, plus a tape measure and a laser measurer.
The only thing wrong with that o light pen/ light is that it’s over priced. Other then that it’s pretty cool. Always better to carry one thing then two

I use it as an impromptu fork for olives or chips (fries), or to stir coffee.
I was horrified by the flip-flop sandal bottle opener, still am.
One advantage of the Parker Jotter is it’s ability to take a large Space Pen refill without modification.
I find flashlights to be the edc item I need least on a typical day because I have that function in my phone now. That's a good combined tool for me.
I really have to agree with you on most every point. I do find myself carrying the Open regularly because it simply is more convenient than my full size warrior mini during the daytime. I think they shot themselves in the foot not having Lockout as a standard features on this tool
I think you're missing the point that this shouldn't be your primary light. As a back up light to keep on your pack or pocket, it's great.
I got one. It works great as a walking flaslight in your shirt pocket and a great backup light. Its Ok as a pen but not horrible.
Amazon and IG have been recommending this pen to me for a while now. The fact that it's $65CAD is stopping me. I'm happy with my i3t/x701 combo.
@@Horde334 i agree with the gimmick part... As for useful... Well, i'd rather use an O-Pen than a Swisschamp, that's for sure.
Yeahh... I agree
@5:08 CLASSIC SHABAZZ DICTION!! "Your Going to be Dealing with Flashlighty issues! Namely... Darkness... "
When multitasking tools go wrong, eventually you become Edward Scissorhands.
I love my o pen 2. It's been through the wash 2 or 3 times and still works. I use it all the time
I am by no means a multi tool kinda guy, but in my experience I’ve found that they only make sense of all of the functions are relevant to one another.
I agree completely with you Nick regarding the light/pen. Just not useful enough.
So how much for the light pen?
Experience proves that only two main types of multi-tools work: swiss army knives and pliers, and they still require quality and good sense. Taking several functions in odd platforms may create ducks.
Thanks for not shitting on the venerable swiss champ too hard in this video...def not a childs toy as you may have alluded to in a previous video lol
I'm glad you brought up Leatherman pliers, I absolutely despise Leatherman pliers. I have genuinely never understood the appeal of Leatherman tools outside of a few very specific careers.
So are you a gerber or victorinox fan then?
And the black O-pen 2 doesn’t have a light lockout, which can be annoying.
Hi Nick! I have to say, I really like O light products and I do kind of dig the pen. I’m a flight nurse at Rady Childrens here in SD & something like that is perfect for in flight uses. I do realize my job itself does fit into a niche category. There aren’t too many of us out there, so the pen/light fits right in😆
A nurse using a flashlight company that literally killed someone is hilarious
I work in a secure facility with no windows and I bought this combination pen light to help with dark areas. I thought it would help with opening and documenting access. The problem was that my shirt pockets were not deep enough to secure this combo device with the clip. I quickly went back to separate pen and light.
Seems like it was designed to sit reversed on the outside of your pocket so you could use the light hands free. Most pockets would not have enough support
This pen is great. Don’t let this video steer you wrong.
That blue flashlight made me laugh out loud.
Most multitools are compromises. Notable exceptions are high end Leatherman and SAK Cadet.
Does it come in S35VN?
The plain edge blade on my Leatherman Wave is S35VN. Not sure if that’s standard though.
@@charlesburow8120 believe the standard leatherman wave blade steel is 420hc and in some rare cases you can find aftermarket blades but the only ones i've seen have been in s30v
My dumbass laughed because I thought you were talking about the pen. Then I laughed again because I’m a dumbass
Carry dedicated single purpose tools, but don't leave that tool belt behind... 😁👍
I see what the problem is: There needs to be a knife blade and a cap lifter on that flashlight pen in the next version, and a kydex to carry it tactically.
If you press the power button rapidly 15 times on the Marauder 2 it disables the proximity sensor. Incase you wanted to burn stuff.
Who has a pen long enough to run out of ink. Lol I loose them way before the run out🤣😂
Mine ran out of ink but it ran out inside of my pocket.
Truth
Spend $20 bucks for one and you'll hold on to it longer. I carry a Fisher Backpacker Space Pen everyday and no loss for 2+ years.
@@IYF_Productions_SL had 2 space pens lost them ! ..... I'm hopeless lol! Terrible ADHD!
@@heebs72gb maybe get one that you like and attach it to a toilet seat like they do at the service station with the bathroom key ;)
Yes I have often questioned my toothbrush grenade launcher.
A toothbrush that launches grenades or a grenade launcher that launches toothbrushes? I mean either one sounds fantastic but one is probably more dangerous than the other, unless you are plaque. :)
I assume it has Bluetooth.
And what if you need to use your flashlight to let you see well enough to write something?
I like your Swisschamp! That is a useful multitool! I actually EDC that as my knife as where I live single-handed lock blades are not legal here. I carry a parang/ machete or fixed blade when hiking! I personally wouldn't buy the combo light and pen, I carry a pen similar to a Parker pen and a small flashlight. Liked the video.
Cool looking pen ,I like the idea to pen/light ,good message 😀
Similar with all these camping shovels with a saw, knife, firestarter, caplifter etc in weird screw out parts.
I have never been a fan of any multi tools, but I am the kind of guy that has a 5 gallon bucket of tools as my edc. Lol
Here here!
Only high marketing skilled compagnies can make high profit with such weird things
Not going to lie, in my job that would actually come in pretty handy, if I didn't already have a great pen and a fantastic flashlight
Great rant. O Light makes good stuff but the flashlight pen did not seem like a good idea. Maybe the pen, light and pilers would be better 😂
Even the best multi tools are only ever a collection of half tools.
Nick have you tried out the Fenix EO3R? It is a smaller, sometimes less expensive competitor to the TIP. And there is a cover on the USB port!
I love the Open it fights the bulge, they all need lockout like the copper
I carry a Streamlight Microstream and a Zebra Pen together in my shirt pocket for less than the cost of that Olight.
I use my OPen but the shine has definitely worn off of it compared to a non combi pen.
LoL listening to this as i sit here with a key chain mounted Rovyvon aurora A2 along with a Victrinix Tinkerer knife
Never had a use for a multi-tool.
Hey nick could you do a review on nitecore ntp30 titanium pen just wanna know your opinion thanks
The little light on the pen is no better than the one on my phone.
Do you have one? I found Its defiantly better than my Note 9. Plus using your phone as your flashlight is a terrible idea IMO. Its handy in a pinch but your wasting allot of battery life that I'd rather have on my phone for calls and stuff in a situation that matters.
Get yourself a knipex cobra and you won’t think leatherman makes decent pliers anymore
Yeah my free Olight pen2 sits in a dresser drawer while I carry a small AAA Olight and a plastic clicky Fisher Space Pen in my backpack.
Always better to carry one thing then two
Totally agree on the price. I might pay $19.95 for it to keep in my car.
