  • The Digital SAT is here, and there are lots of strategies that you can use to avoid the trap answers and solve the hardest questions. This episode covers the most essential Reading strategy - Dumb Summaries. It may seem obvious that we should summarize the passages, but few people know how to do this quickly and confidently. For now, we'll focus on just the connotations of the passages, vocabulary words, and answer choices. You'll be surprised how many questions you can get right by thinking only about positives and negatives!
    NOTE: None of the sample questions in this series are from the official practice tests on the Bluebook app. You can watch all episodes without spoiling any of the practice tests.

    Thank you so much! These strategies are going to be so helpful. I spent most of the time in reading the context and reading it over and over again and eventually running out of time. Yesterday I was taking a blue book practice test and i missed WHOLE SEVEN questions in the 2nd module. I am taking sat on March 9th and definitely bringing this technique to use. Thank you once again sir 🌷

      Wow that’s awesome! I’m so glad I could help! There will always be a few hard passage and vocab questions in each module, but if you can get every grammar, transition, and outline question right, then you can still score very high missing a few of the passages. Make sure you don’t run out of time before you get to the outlines at the end!

    In a 2016 study, Eastern Washington University psychologist Amani El-Alayli found that, among the study participants who experienced frisson (a physiological response akin to goosebumps or getting the chills) while listening to music, there was one personality trait that they scored particularly ______ openness to experience.
    what would be the correct punctuation using (high on)

    • @SetteleTutoring
      @SetteleTutoring  Рік тому +1

      You would need either a dash or colon after "high on". This entire sentence is a long setup to introduce "openness to experience". In order to use a colon, we would need a complete sentence before the colon. After it, we could have just a few words like in this example. Colons are mostly used when the first part is asking an implied question and the second part is answering that question, In this case, "what personality trait scored high?" is the question and "openness" is the answer.

    Is there no other reasoning as to why the answer for the 1st question (sick rose text) is D?
    D seems like it requires a lot of subjective text inference which Sat doesnt usually require,
    And C would entail that the text describes the rose and the worm interacting

    • @SetteleTutoring
      @SetteleTutoring  20 днів тому

      I don’t think it’s very subjective. Is there a corrupting force? Yes, the worm is destroying the rose. Is the poem lamenting it? Yes, it seems very negative and sad. Both of those Strong Words seem easy to prove. But the key is that we don’t need to read the poem and instantly interpret it in this particular way. We can look at the summaries offered to us in the choices and test them out.

    • @araj3992
      @araj3992 20 днів тому

      I see.... What would be a definitive reason that C is wrong?

    • @SetteleTutoring
      @SetteleTutoring  20 днів тому +1

      @@araj3992 Because it’s not a poem about biology. How do worms and roses interact? Can you use a line from the poem to answer that question? Maybe it shows how a particular worm and rose interact, but even that is a stretch. Notice what you’re doing here. You’re trying to force a wrong answer in when there’s a superior one that fits pretty smoothly. This is the benefit of Dumb Summaries! They prevent us from over-thinking it.

    No matter what I do I don't seem to improve my English scores..I am still at 670 and the highest I ever got was 690.My math is good I am at 730 and still learning .But I am so disappointed because of the English. Sometimes i mess up the vocabulary and sometimes the punctuation even though i've watched a 1000 videos on those specific topics and at other times i can't manage the time.Any tips?

    • @SetteleTutoring
      @SetteleTutoring  Рік тому +1

      I think you should focus on the punctuation. Those rules never change, so memorization is easier. Definitely use the rules around semicolons and colons to help you eliminate answer choices. Mostly, you'll be listening for independent clauses and fragments.
      The vocabulary is hard because even memorizing definitions might not be enough. Words have lots of definitions, and sometimes the context really matters. Try to see if the vocab issue is not knowing the words in the choices or not knowing what kind of word needs to go in the blank. Maybe the issue isn't the vocab itself but how you analyze the structure of the passages. That might also help you move faster on the passages, since a lot of it comes down to noticing connotations and shifts in ideas, like contrasts.
      Regardless, make sure you don't run out of time with any grammar, transition, or outline questions left. They are much easier than most passage questions, especially in the Hard Module. You want to lock in as many points as possible, even if that means giving up on a passage question that will take a long time.

    Love your videos! But "dumb" summary has a negative connotation in my mind...I know you mean "simplify" but I'd prefer "Simple Summary" instead of "Dumb"...just my opinion, hope you don't mind me sharing!

    • @SetteleTutoring
      @SetteleTutoring  6 місяців тому

      That’s the point! Many students over-think the passages. Nobody is impressed by how “smart” a summary is when it goes waayyyy beyond what’s needed to solve the question. You don’t get any extra points by understanding every little detail. Encouraging people to be “dumb” reminds them that you don’t need to understand everything to understand enough to get the points.
