I love my Edition XS. You're absolutely correct about the band on it. It sucks and I have a small head, so I bought a 4 pack of Dekoni Nuggets, and that fixed the headband issue somewhat but still not the most comfortable pair to wear. I will more than likely end up getting the FT1 Pro as well as the FT1 whenever they are more widely available on Amazon. Fantastic review and comparisons! The Edition XS aren't the easiest to drive to get its full potential, so my question is, are the FT1 Pro's easier to drive?
@@SiegwardZwiebelbrudi Custom cans one is cheap and $5 for shipping to Europe. They ship it very quickly, only a few days to deliver from UK. Capra on the other hand... Well thought out review and very informative! I find that these sound similar with the Xs being more sibilant in some tracks, otherwise still an enjoyable listening tool. The FT1 Pros seem to be source dependent as well. On my lower powered gear, they can sound grainy and sibilant but still have that bass lift that balances the sound. On the RAW-MDA 1 they sound richer and fuller, and slightly more so on the Topping A30 Pro, but not much of a step up from the RAW-MDA 1.
I would say overall the XS benefit a lot more from a powerful AMP, i kept the FT1 Pro especially, because they work well with low powered sources, i.e. cheap interfaces and bluetooth dongles. i moved my topping dx3pro+ to my living room, powering an HD600, which really is a pair of headphones that scales well with power, especially with EQ applied
@@SiegwardZwiebelbrudi I got the FT1 Pros after the Edition XS died on me, loved them to death and maybe just slightly bitter that they weren't the lucky pair that would last a long time for me, glad I waited it out as I find the FT1 pros to be a happy sidegrade! Disregarding the difference in driver sizes, I found them to sound nearly identical to each other with just the FT1 pros to sounding more natural. I'm trying to EQ the FT1 Pros further just to experiment on how far they can simulate the XS's soundstage based on memory. Also have a pair of 650s which is also the reason why I was tempted to try the FT1 Pros as they sounded like an inbetween of the other two
@@sampokojiin i feel exactly the same way. i wouldn't say they sound identical, mainly because vocals are more intimate, treble is more relaxed etc. but i believed the XS would be straight up better, which turned out to not be the case. side by side they are very similar in what they do well, especially with thicker earpads
thanks for the Video, just got the edition xs and then all these reviews for the ft1pro came out and although most came to the same conclusion (that both are great) the soundstage is probably the reason i keep the hifiman. although i would love the loon and quality of the fiio :D btw i dont have any great closed backs and am thinking of buying the ft1, would this be a good addition?
The sound will be comparable quality , it comes down to the size of headphones for me . Edition XS is very big even at smallest settings it barely fits and is lose on my head
Is the external shell of the headphone microphonic at all? I have their JT1 which sounds good but the entire outside shell is extremely microphonic. I can tap anywhere on it's exterior and hear it ring like a bell. Not good. thnx
@@SiegwardZwiebelbrudi Thanks! I did in fact try different cables on my JT1. Didn't do anything to alleviate the microphonics. That same cable plugged into my Hifiman Ananda and the headphone is dead quiet. No microphonics at all with that headphones it is the actual headphone itself. It's actually really bad which is unfortunate because otherwise it is a decent headphone. Knowing this will keep me from ordering the JT1 when it comes back in stock.
@@RUMBLEGO1 I don't think there are any closed-back headphones without this issue. I've used like 20 different pairs from different brands, and they all had this issue. I think it's because headphones act like a big dish satellite - concentrating all the sound into one spot - your ear.
I don't have the FT1 Pro but Edition XS runs circle around 900 Pro X. The only thing Beyers have is the better build. Edition XS sounds wider, more detailed, and better tuned (and also more comfortable for me.)
Great review. I don't need any of these, but I'd like to add the FT1 Pro to my collection along with the FT1. The Edition XS gets a no from me. Not a fan of the headband and I don't think it would fit me anyway. Plus I have one Hifiman egg shaped cup HP in the OG Ananada which I'm satisfied with.
personally the more intimate vocal reproduction tricked me a little into believing the FT1 Pro has a way smaller soundstage, but honestly after spending more time with both, i had to revisit that initial impression and i would no longer say that there is a night and day difference between the two in how open they sound, ESPECIALLY if you get a pair of thicker earpads. Also their respective tuning is very characteristic and also plays into their projection capabilities, i'm sure you could get them to perform very similarly with EQ. That being said, on one hand there are a lot of statements that the Edition XS handles EQ better, i can't attest to that, but i would say what speaks for the Fiio Ft1 pro is that its tuning is better out of the box. I would not keep the XS without EQ, but have no issue with the FT1 pro. i much prefer the laid back tuning and the more intimate vocals. With EQ and taming treble there a little, i would probably see a slight edge with the XS, but thats just speculation. As far as technicalities are concerned, they both perform equally well in my opinion
I have a pair of poorly QC'd Edition XS and after what I hear about FiiO I'm actually considering it an "upgrade" that I'm getting a pair of FT1 (non-Pro) closed backs in a few weeks. I had similar issues with QC, with a pair of 5XX I had before the Ed-XS. I think I'm done with Hifiman. They just don't care about ensuring quality or value for money for their products under about the $1000 price point. Even those over that, there are some choices made in the build quality (Even Susvara) that I would consider "dirt cheap". Their headbands are horrible!
FT1 and Ft1 pro have nothing in common and they certainly can'tr compete with the Edition XS. closed back headphones have a lot of limitations and the FT1 is no exception.

Nice review - very comprehensive
Bro get yourself a Capra strap or a custom cans strap for your xs and ft1. Both benefit heavily from comfort alone, and xs benefits from the fit.
its not as easy to get in germany, unless you know somebody that has a printer and the correct filaments

Very nice review. Might grab a ft1 pro seems great value. Staying away from hifi-man since my sundara broke for no reason.

yes, but the ft1 is way worse than the pro. i would honestly just get different cables, that alleviates microphonic issues on both
