hello, I just want to say that I interlectually love your videos I am 11 years old and in. the 5th grade, I have always loved math and want to get better, by watching your videos I can learn so much more. Thanks
I'm going into 7th grade and I was placed into pre algebra, not 7th grade math so I'm really nervous because I'm not the best at mathematics. Thank you Khan Academy for helping me remember everything I forgot about math :D
Keep in mind that I'm popping my cherry, regarding pre-algebra, with this video. But instead of visualizing a number line, I found it far quicker to subtract the larger number from the smaller number and throw a negative sign on it if I'm subtracting and keep it positive if I'm adding. I double checked this method on my calculator and came to the same correct, even when I used numbers like 1000 and 1000,000,000. For instance 18597 - 56823 = -38226. Now instead of visualizing or writing out a number line, one could just subtract 56823 from 18597 and still get 38226. Just remember to throw a negative sign on it and the workload seems to be cut down my 80%.
Agreed! Although that sometimes mixes me up, I like that strategy. The negative part where you have to add and subtract, for example -5 -19, and I would have to subtract 5 from 19 then throw a negative sign on. It mixes me up though, cuz sometimes I do 19-5=14, and forget about the negative sign. But what messes me up even more is when I do something like 3 -4, which was in the video, and then I sometimes count in my head on a number line and I get the wrong answer. What i think works best now is I do 4-3 then remember the opposite of positive and put a negative sign.
Even though you may still owe a bank money by spending more than you have, you are still subtracting a positive number from another positive account size in the future to pay back. But you don't pay with negative money... you pay with positive money, subtracted from another positive quantity. + & - are often used in convenience in our common daily lives. But if zero represents the lack of all numbers, then 0-1 = the same problem with infinity +1.... You can never actually have less than nothing, and yet, you can promise to give back (subtract) a future something of which you don't have yet.
Learned this last month in 6th grade. Aced the tests which were about negative and positive numbers mean median mode and range and pemdas using negative and positive numbers. We also learned about absolute value about two and a half months ago
There are two main problems with math and numbers in general. The first is negative numbers which should be labeled as opposite instead of negative because zero is zero there can be nothing less than none even if you had zero dollars and owed someone infinity dollars you may be behind on having something more than what they will receive from you but when the money goes from you to them your supposed negative is still their positive so oppositional computation would better explain and define what the reality of it is. Second is every numerical designation, quantity and or value is used as( 1 = one of any given object that has at least a single representation of it's self) but the flaw is in using this to label a very large but finite group of objects (people, places, things, and any and all forms you can imagine of all those, some of those, and in between those groups but the absence of them can not be one of nothing so defining things as 1 though each one can be identical to different in size, shape, density, elasticity, visuality, tactility and so on gives to the one thing that is inevitable are minute we feel flaws in calculations when all those things and all the universe interacting with them on any and all levels, planes, and dimensions of that whole object instead of that 1 object and as numbers can only go in one true direction those minute flaws add up till a day arrives where the asteroid hits your house instead of missing the planet by how ever many miles that scientist were so sure of because it works for now Examples being: absolute zero being less than zero, opposites attract, I had another example but lost it in thought but in a graph that shows wins vs. losses both numerical designations are positive numbers So that would mean that negative is only a point of view that we have used to manipulate math into our favor which is still a positive lol
You are mixing apples and oranges. Yes, 0 Kelvin is absolute 0. And if you are interested in the movement of atoms (or lack ther of) then that scale makes sense. For celcius, the temperature where water freezes (0) and where is boils (100) are what is impoortant, so the scale is adjusted. That doesn't mean that something can't be colder than the temp that water freezes at. So in that sense, it is below zero, or negative.
+Artic Fox I'm going back after 3. Mostly because my school claimed that I was "Unteachable" and refused to school me there, then the others in the area followed so we had to move. However, 7 does seem like a long time. So I am very curious as to why.
THANKS SO MUCH! I'm in primary 5 which you guys call grade 4 and I didn't need to finish the video I understood it straight away I'm subscribing right now. I thought this would be hard but it's very easy.😃😀
i swear on my life that thoughout my yrs of school, none of my math teachers ever taught me elementary alg (note i have not watched the video yet but i am about to) I'm going to learn a little bit about it so it help can me on tsi exam.
Although I would teach this as you did here, it may be worthwhile to show the student another approach, that of vectors. Positive numbers are vectors to the right, Negative numbers are vectors to the left and the absolute values of those vectors are their magnitude. This will give them a leg up when you get to teaching analytic geometry, engineering applications, and non cartesian graphing.
I was looking on your site and could not find the basics of "Supply and Demand" or "Price Elasticity Demand?" I'm sure its there I just can't find it. Also I was looking for some information on the a Country's Reserves, or China reasoning for buying USA Treasury Bills (I understand it is better than holding Cash due to inflation) but then they lend exports to the point where the USA has a deficit. Could you explain these economics?
Who's watching this to pretend that their actually doing homework, when you're actually just using at as a cover whenever your parents come into the room to check if you're working :p
Is this a full pre-algebra course? I see other courses on youtube that are much, much longer. I also looked at the course on the Khan website and it doesn't use this playlist. It seems to be very different. Is that one better than this one? I'm really looking for a college level course, ideally.
My dad showed me you and I am stuck up in a bad situation... I just got some new material and honestly I am pretty clueless. My notes help somewhat both otherwise, I'm roadkill. Can you please do closure, identity, inverse, communitive, associative and all those other properties?? If I don't get a good understanding on this I might end up failing math. And believe me... It is not my homework bringing me down. It's those darn tests!!
I think he may have gotten that, having negative money at the bank bit, from an older Louis C.K. bit. Good execution though. It made me lol, then I said to myself, 'Wait a minute, I've heard something like that before', then, hence, I came to the conclusion, it was Louis C.K. I LOVE Khan Academy btw!
This video is really funny. But something interesting to note is that even serious mathematicians of the past didn't believe negative numbers existed, lol.
whereas kelvin starts from the complete lack of temperature-causing atom movement. There is no lower temperature possible, so, a true temperature scale begins from no temperature. So using celcius is a false example.
i disagree with the explanation and i'm still searching for one (an explanation) of negative numbers. what in reality can be represented by a negative number? everything exists. There is no negative exists, its yes or no and then there is namestuff, a person is, when he dies and goes to ashes he is not. In the case of temperature, 0 degrees celcius is a faulty bottom since atoms are still moving, causing temperature,
where was this guy when i was in school???
