You don't own anyone an explanation, I am 62 years of age and have brought plenty of expensive furniture over the years from big box stores and the furniture was bad quality. It's not about how much you paid for it it's about how you take care of it. I love the storage unit I going look it to see if it comes in dark green. You do you and let everyone else do them. Just continue to put out your videos.
I actually love the color of the tv unit and how it brings together the room.. Once I had a task rabbit tell me a little trick they had when building not so greet furniture is to use wood glue, he said he glued the slots where the panels slides in, he puts glue in the screw holes.. basically any connection point, and it makes it more sturdy and reinforces the joints.
Good decision! Make your home cosy, allow your finances to recover and grow again, that gives you time to live in your apartment, find out what works for you and what doesn't before making expensive mistakes and makes sure you are settled to continue living there! When that's all in place, that's the time to invest in expensive pieces and furnishings.
I’m loving the way you are putting this new apartment together. Mostly because it’s quite different to all of your other apartments. Especially the way you are using colour. So good! 💙💙
I love the honest reviews of the furniture & the financial chat Rachel ❤ It’s so wonderful to see you so happy in life and watch you set up in a new country 🩷
i agree with many other comments that you don't owe anyone an explanation, but i really enjoyed hearing your thoughts about the way you buy pieces rn! as a swede i'm also a big believer in ikea and similar places, you can do some really great rooms with simpler pieces, and you clearly are! love following along on the journey ☺
You always make your living spaces beautiful, inviting, comfy and cozy! Welcome back to the States, looking forward to seeing you sharing your life with us!
You’re so real for talking about your finances and how you can’t afford to spend a fortune on every piece!!!! I respect that so much ❤❤ this is completely normal unlike every other vlogger/influencer buying cb2 beds and dining sets 😭 thanks for being so honest ( for the honest reviews too ) i just moved to DC & will be moving in my new apartment in 10 days.🎉
One of my favorite things to do is buy 2nd hand furniture. I found a beautiful shelf and it was repainted and the color was perfect and I'm adding my own touches to it. Again, its all about comfort too.
Buying the most expensive things may not always make you happy, when you find something that suits your home and if that thing makes you happy, that's enough. Have a great weekend ❤️
It took us a couple of years to update/furnish our apartment. I think you're doing a great job. I'm a huge believer in IKEA, Amazon and hand-me-downs. While West Elm and those other stores are nice, we call them "Idea stores" and try to make the best with what we have. The best furniture is what works well for YOU, not everyone else! Your home is coming along quite nicely and I'm enjoying the process too!
I think it's really smart to go for budget furniture, it's something I was thinking about when you had your bed disaster, because you plan on moving in with your boyfriend soon (like a year?) so it doesn't make sense to invest in furniture only you like when you might have to sell it all to furniture your home together. But also it's none of our business if you did decide to do that, or maybe your boyfriend doesn't care what furniture you have in your home together. It's your life, not ours, we're just here for the ride, and I am personally loving it
Thrifting would be a good option to maybe get good quality pieces.....you just might need to give it a good clean or paint it. Some TLC and DIY and you might end up with some very interesting and beautiful pieces to fill your home with. I would love to see the thrifting and DIY vlogs😊
I love that you always just jump right into building furniture. Great example for people who would look at box of pieces and never think they could do it
Hi Rachel, so happy for you, everything it’s going to work out 😊. And in my opinion you don’t have to explain yourself, you do you, and it’s nobody Bussiness 😉
Your tv unit is soooo pretty Rachel!💙💙💙and can totally see why you’ve chosen it and it also ties in with the blue in your kitchen and rug too🥰xo I love the gold hardware too💙it doesn’t look poor quality in the video and looks lovely and also if your only there for a year or so then it works for the time you might be using it💙💙💙💙xox
Welcome to Vienna, Virginia ~my hometown ❤ In case you missed it Wardrobe Rescue is a great upscale resale shop on Church Street. Pear Tree Cottage is so cute! Bear Branch Tavern is a wonderful eatery too. Also, Ballard Designs has fantastic sales and a catalog for your dream board pics 😍
Great progress Rachel and love the new furniture, the tv unit is stunning - great choice! every time I move countries, I go for ikea pieces to manage my expenses but still making my place nice with other pieces, do what is best for you ❣️
I loved hearing you talk about Tysons Corner and Vienna. My office used to be in Tysons, but I moved out to the Reston area a few years ago. Welcome to the neighborhood!!!
Hi Rachel! Girl take your time getting your place together. No explanations needed. Those same people talking get all their stuff from Amazon too! 😂 I did want to mention they do have CB2 & West Elm clearance centers. Maybe look in your area or even consignment stores. That’s what I’ve done & found some amazing deals.
Oh no you are doing GREAT!!! American quality is so chintzy because most of what’s available to us is China imports and it’s so frustrating but that’s life here…I love how your saving expenses for what you love…I am loving so much watching you build this decor in your new apartment…I’m inspired
My dream bed is similar to this one but it’s an expensive solid bed that’s Australian made customisable with the fabric and the timber legs. It also has a tall head board so it stands out with the mattress and pillows on it. Seeing this makes me jealous. Setting up home is the best.
It all looks great. It’s certainly clever to do this new home set up so wisely. Who cares about the quality at this season in your life?! You’re not hard on your furniture. It’ll last just fine. It’s temporary. It’s enough to serve its function. And looks good in the meantime!! I’m a luxury interior designer since over 25 years. I always say there’s a time for IKEA (or Amazon or Wayfair) for EVERYONE. And sadly, I’ve spent $4000 on a chest of drawers and $10000 on a sofa that were the same quality as IKEA. And that was 15 years ago!!! Not kidding!!!! Quality is getting worse at every price point unfortunately. So you just stay your course. Good job!
I’ve seen a lot of stuff about this with clothing and it seems to be the same with furniture. Everything is getting poorer and poorer quality and the prices are going up. It’s really really sad 😫😭
I can’t get over how close you are to me now. I’ve watched you for years and to have you in my town (Vienna) is pretty cool. I know the owner of Pear Tree, she’s so sweet. Love how your apartment is coming together ❤
It’s nice to hear how much everything cost especially getting your visa. I feel like it’s getting to know you more ☺️ you should share more of you! I also want to go to the USA one day, from the UK so it’s good to know how much it all costs!
Glad you got a more neutral bed! For a bedroom, a neutral bed frame is more calm and relaxing and it gives you literally a blank canvas for more fun bedding that you can switch out if you feel like it. About the tv unit, it’s gorgeous! It is a pop of color but still neutral and it looks amazing with the rest of your decor. Im not gonna lie, I was thinking about why wouldnt you try and buy a bit more quality pieces instead of Wayfair and such, but I’m glad you addressed it and you’re being honest and relatable. Many of us are in the same boat and it honestly works for what we need it to do and aesthetically it looks great so it really doesnt matter! I will say tho! Something you could consider even when deciding to buy furniture for a future long term home, Facebook marketplace can be a treasure chest! You can find gorgeous vintage pieces for amazing prices and its not only more sustainable but aso unique and with more personality than the cookie cutter furniture pieces from west elm, PB and even super high end stuff like RH. Something to consider, maybe even for your side tables! Anyway, your apartment is looking beautiful and I’ve been loving watching the process! ♥️
I think you’re totally smart to be conscious of what you spend on furnishing your apartment. We bought cheap furniture for a long time and little by little, we add a new piece we invest in, but we also live in a home now vs a rental. You really don’t owe anyone an explanation as to what you pick or how much you spend. Furnishing a new home is expensive and you’re totally right, the quality for the price in the US is pretty terrible. Hasn’t always been that way, but in recent years it’s become much worse. Also, Ballard makes some beautiful pieces (I own some) and not surprised you love their stuff as it seems right up your alley style-wise. Fun fact, in some cities they have Ballard outlets. ❤
You are doing such a good job shopping on a budget, and your finances are nobody's business but yours. I do love the blue TV unit. Too bad the quality is so poor, bc it's beautiful, with the curved top and fluted doors. I'm actually in love. Have a great week!
Estate sales are a great way to find amazing furniture for budget prices. The DC area is a treasure trove for them! Not sure if they’re a thing in Australia, but they are in the U.S.
I dont think you have to explain your set up..i think what you have done with your space is devine..such good tastes and why spend heaps in these early days..fantastic,good on you..sending u a hug from West Gippsland, Victoria..Aus..long time viewer xx
Your condo is looking great, give yourself a pat on the back for everything that you have accomplished. I always loved your Morning Routine vlogs, I am thinking of investing in a Nespresso Lattisma One Coffee Machine do you recommend? Your vlogs about your condo make everything look so cozy, I can almost smell the morning coffee brewing, good job.
Your smart not to go into debt to set up a new place you may want to consider thrift/ antique shops you can find wood pieces sometimes at really good prices sometimes you need to stain or paint but you get better quality 💜
bad with side tables look good! can i recommend to you a channel for sewing inspo? maybe you already know it. Rosery Apparel, it'a australian talented girl, a lot of dresses 🧡🤎
I want to but its hard when I dont have a car that will fit a lot in it. We have to be a bit selective but I also havent had a chance to get to any thrift stores. Wanted to do that yesterday but it didnt quite work out so hopefully in the next few days I can 🩵🩵🩵
You do you R. If I wanted to see Pottery Barn/CB2 , I’d go to watch their sites [good for ideas though]. I love Ballard too. I’m much older than you, but I love watching your progress. I like seeing ‘Rachel-style’ not a matchy, matchy global furniture store. My house is still filled with both expensive & thrift pieces, but it takes time to collect those It’s more satisfying, because there’s usually a story with it. It does take patience though. I’d rather spend my money on travel & experiences. So even though I gave you advice on the sofa table 😅(& also bought Blue Citrus & Gingham candles at BBW last night 👍) ignore everyone’s advice & enjoy the process!
I’m curious as to why you didn’t consider Ikea. Their hemnes bedside tables are very similar to the ones you’ve purchased and much cheaper. If you wanted a specific colour then it would be easy to sand down and repaint. Not a criticism, but a lot of people do Ikea for their first apartment and just wondered if there was a reason why you didn’t go for that?
The hemnes are only $20 cheaper each and they are too tall and thin and a bit plain for what i was after so I didnt mind the price difference. I wanted something more details 🥰
Also people are just used to seeing home updates on UA-cam where everyone just buys all of the furniture at once and furnish 10 rooms with WestElm... It's not realistic and i would never expect everyone to be able to do this. It took me 6 months to fully furnish my living room, these things cost monet
tv unit looks cool but if its bad quality, return it! i wonder why you bought all cheap items? surely there are better quality furtniture for a little bit more money?(no hate, just wondering since i used to love your furniture videos)
Thank you 🩵 I half agree and half disagree. I'm really appreciative of creators who share their breakdown in expenses and how they spend their money. It helps give me a better idea of how to be financially responsible 🩷
The TV unit might not be the best quality, but I love it! The old assumption by people that you have more money than you do... My son moved to the States from Australia and even people who know me assume I have the money to go visit🤦♀️ I really love how you're styling your apartment. The rug and TV unit look awesome together ❤️
Aw thank you so much 💛 and it’s hard hey cause no one wants to admit they can’t do something 🙈 life has just gotten so expensive in the last few years. Definitely taking to pace myself with spending
Happy weekend Rachel the blue cab totally set your living room off the colors absolutely amazing. I think the bed looks really cute. It’s really coming together. Love to see your enthusiasm. Have a wonderful weekend.
Walmart or target is maybe a little better. But you you and be happy with what you can do don’t have explain your situation to anyone remember America assume a lot about people, some are like the means girls but most here are nice and wish you well. 😊

No explanation necessary, you decorate your place exactly how you want! It looks lovely and it's coming along quite nicely ♥

Oh that’s such a great idea. Maybe I should go back and do that’s. It’s easy to unscrew it all, I love that 💛🩵
I actually really like how you've tied in the blue with the rug, the lamp and the TV unit. It's coming tog beautifully Rachel
You have a good eye for putting things together. I think you're doing a great job furnishing your apartment on a budget. Looks awesome, hon. 🤗

LOVE your TV stand!
Hi Rachel, so happy for you, everything it’s going to work out 😊. And in my opinion you don’t have to explain yourself, you do you, and it’s nobody Bussiness 😉
You are a trooper putting everything together yourself. I can’t assemble anything 😂
Loving your new apartment and all the decor. You did amazing. ❤
Love the TV unit, it is such a beautiful colour. And you do you. I'm loving the whole process with you❤
The unit looks gorgeous. They shame, texture and colour but it’s a shame it looks cheap. My OCD wouldn’t handle the gaps and not being aligned.
I've LOVED watching your apartment slowly coming together 😭😭 it feels like such an accomplishment and I'm not even involved lol
Love you Rachel. Love your honesty. Best wishes for your future❤...
Your place is coming together beautifully 😍😍😍 you have really good taste 💙💙💙
As a dmv local I’ll give you the renter too of thrifting and antiquing. Good quality for cheap. Estate sales are also great!
Love the new bedframe and the tv unit🎉it looks great! They do not have to be expensive as long as they function well😊
Understood! You do so great and have an amazing ability to assemble furniture! The TV stand actually looks really nice. Enjoy! ❣️

The bedside tables are beautiful - i think if you switched the handles on them to black ones it would be even better❤
love it so much
You are the queen of furniture assembly. I really hope there is some swearing happening otherwise I need to hang my head. 😂😂😂
Hahaha definitely it’s never going the right way 😫😆
Estate sales are a great way to find amazing furniture for budget prices. The DC area is a treasure trove for them! Not sure if they’re a thing in Australia, but they are in the U.S.

I love the tv unit looks so nice and cozy
Happy Saturday!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
The TV stand looks beautiful.
such a nice bed!
You have a beautiful rug in the living room! May I please know where is it from?
Your condo is looking great, give yourself a pat on the back for everything that you have accomplished. I always loved your Morning Routine vlogs, I am thinking of investing in a Nespresso Lattisma One Coffee Machine do you recommend? Your vlogs about your condo make everything look so cozy, I can almost smell the morning coffee brewing, good job.
Your smart not to go into debt to set up a new place you may want to consider thrift/ antique shops you can find wood pieces sometimes at really good prices sometimes you need to stain or paint but you get better quality 💜
I really was hoping to find some stuff yesterday but didnt make it to the thrifting places I wanted. Hopefully in the next few days I can 🩵🩵
I love your bedroom, take your time. Don't explain just do you
bad with side tables look good!
can i recommend to you a channel for sewing inspo? maybe you already know it. Rosery Apparel, it'a australian talented girl, a lot of dresses 🧡🤎
How about buying second hand furniture and/or upcycling to reduce cost but still get quality preloved stuff?
I want to but its hard when I dont have a car that will fit a lot in it. We have to be a bit selective but I also havent had a chance to get to any thrift stores. Wanted to do that yesterday but it didnt quite work out so hopefully in the next few days I can 🩵🩵🩵
I thought you would go for the good old BESTA unit and do some hack 😎 anyway, enjoy the new everything 💙
Love it all 😍! Are you still thinking of getting a desk/dining chairs?
It is looking good!
Regarding the bedside table leg, can you take it to a hardware store and get the proper size screw?
You do you R. If I wanted to see Pottery Barn/CB2 , I’d go to watch their sites [good for ideas though]. I love Ballard too. I’m much older than you, but I love watching your progress. I like seeing ‘Rachel-style’ not a matchy, matchy global furniture store.

Very cute bed!
Thank you! 😊
Omg that TV unit 😍😍, everything is looking soo good, pity about the quality. But it looks good

Furniture is expensive, totally fair that at the moment you're getting cheaper things. Most of my Furniture is kmart and ikea
Love the TV unit but it’s not bright 😂
Can't wait to watch ❤️
Yay ❤❤
Is it as expensive to go to another Country or less than the USA? Like USA to Canada?
I love love the tv unit the color is amazing and i think it’s tying the apartment together
Can’t you just put your internet cable through the holes in the right back panels 👍good job putting it together👏
There’s no holes cause it’s not tv unit so I’ll have to make my own 🙈
tv unit looks cool but if its bad quality, return it!
i wonder why you bought all cheap items? surely there are better quality furtniture for a little bit more money?(no hate, just wondering since i used to love your furniture videos)
Personally I feel like money is a private discussion. It’s looking really good.
Thank you 🩵 I half agree and half disagree. I'm really appreciative of creators who share their breakdown in expenses and how they spend their money. It helps give me a better idea of how to be financially responsible 🩷

Aw thank you so much 💛 and it’s hard hey cause no one wants to admit they can’t do something 🙈 life has just gotten so expensive in the last few years. Definitely taking to pace myself with spending
We used to have great quality furniture here in the US. But lately especially shipped from overseas is mostly horrible quality now.
❤❤❤❤
Bummer about the furniture delays!
You are doing well. Also, you do not need to explain yourself to anyone
