A lot of nice mods, especially the PCCM. That’s my next mod. I’ve also done the factory short-shift kit, completely agree on that. On the fence about the ducktail, looks natural and must save a huge amount of weight, but not the direction I’d go and it seems to block your third/middle tail light. I wouldn’t have eliminated the airbag, but I agree that the original four-spoke steering wheel needs to be replaced. I swapped in the later three-spoke wheel with the colored crest airbag, and that was a nice upgrade.
Thanks for the videos for 2020, they've been very entertaining and informative, in what has been a pretty terrible year. I hope you keep safe over the Christmas period on your frozen British roads, while we swelter in our steaming hot Downunder Christmas. All the best Lee. Cheers Peter
On my 996 v.1, I have the short shifter, LN IMS fix, 18" Techart Fuchs style black rims, Millie Miglia exhaust, fiberglass duck tail, Rennline aluminum pedals, and intake mod. I'd like to add stiffer sway bars and better shocks but I love my car. It's 23 years old with 136K, I take it to the track and do a lot of autocross and the thing is a beast!
Probably a day late and a dollar short, but lowering the engine is the way to go replacing the expansion tank. Don’t buy the cheap tank, casting flash leaks. I went thru 2, and ended up using adhesive shrink wrap to seal between the hose and tank. Oh, hose clamp tools are a big plus! I can do it in an hour now... lotsa leaks with the cheap tank, lotsa practice!
It‘s a very nice 996 MK1 an I think that´s the best interpretation of a typical 911 Legend for watercooled one... your videos are made very interesting and fun to watch. Keep it up and stay healthy. Best regards from germany from 996.1 Driver✌️
I am not normally a fan of the 996 but I must say I'm liking this little greenie, right down to the Momo, a fine touch to help lift the boring 'not 911' interior. I love the mods you've fitted. Even also love the Fuchs replicas. Fuchs look so good on later cars but 18-19 inch. Leave the 16s for the oldies like mine. Great work Lee
The Fuchs are perfect ! And every sport classic validates the look and value to them on water cooled variants every bit as any air cooled. These are modern classics now.
I've also fitted the PCCM, partly after watching your fitting video (helped convince me), I love it, well worth the money IMHO. I couldn't resist then adding new speakers all round, 6 focals and I've a Bose bass box to add too, it already sounds amazing even without it! I've a function-first gear shifter, engine mounts and short shifter kit to go on next! Also, have you thought of going for a valved exhaust? I think that's going to be next on my list :)
Absolutely love the retro vibe, definitely a clever way to get the retro look with more modern drivability and tech. It’s a tricky balance to get right but you nailed even though I’m not a massive fan of green cars I have to say it all works brilliantly 👍🏻
Loved watching you get this 996 just how you want it , great mods nice retro look , keep the videos coming, it’s inspired me into getting my first Porsche a 996 👍🏻
Love the car and channel! doing a retro build on my 996.1 in Aus and was similarly scandalised by Fuchs not providing centre caps on £2.5k wheels! Thought is was a mistake ... porsche tax 😅
Really nice work on your beautiful 996. A question on your momo installation. When you remove your original porsche steering wheel, the car will give you an airbag light problem. How did you manage to turn that light off?
Great video Lee , I put Miltek sport silencers on my 4S last year and I’m not really keen on the sound .. a little noisy and not a deep enough sound , wish I’d gone with the Dansk “Sound” now .. louder I know but a deeper sound as apposed a noisy rasp like the Miltek
Cheers Mark! I quite liked Milltek Sport silencers on my 996.2 C4 when I had it, the Dansk 'Sound' version is supposed to be very loud, which put me off, but if that's what you like…!
Great video as always. I hope you would consider changing the seats. That's another major interface with the car since you are sitting in it all the time while driving. Recaro seats are good or you can go with the GT3 seats if you want to stick OEM parts. Also Car-Bone makes gorgeous wooden shift knobs for 996 platform. I think it's worth a look.
Bang on the money re: seats and shifters, as I plan to change both next year. The seats are horrendous in a 996, offering zero comfort or lateral hold. I'm looking forward to changing.
Love the Duck Tail. One mod Id really like to do to my 2000 996 C2. Have you had any issues with law enforcement regarding the visibility of the 3rd brake light not being visible from the rear?
My '01 Carrera came with Bilstein suspension and was already lowered to exactly where I would have put it. Also came with the short shift done. The one thing that I have done to it which I think makes a massive difference is fit a sprint booster. Mine is a manual with the e-gas pedal and I never warmed to the throttle response. It just wasn't what I think a Porsche should react like. Little Irish may have a throttle cable so wouldn't need it, but the sprint booster for me has turned out to be a great bang for your buck.
Great mod list to your 996 I'm currently in the process of modding my 2003 986 Boxster S I've already fitted a after market short shift kit then I'm looking at fitting some new wheels and exhaust next .
Hi Pal, hope you are well, to readers, this might sound "odd", a modification that I would recommend that affects driveability and gear change is to replace the engine mounts with semi solid rennline ones. Massive difference, as the gearchange is cable, with drivetrain now not moving, makes a massive difference. Also change the front gearbox mount. Ball ache to do, but worth it. My car has now finally been completed from its full repaint as well...it is indeed a minter.
Excellent job, Lee, it’s very near to my idea of perfect 911, I just think about a 997.1. A little side note about the audio: the levels between the intro/b-roll and the talking beats are very different, the latter is very muted in comparison. Just a little beat unpleasant when there are scene changes and my soundbar start to scream 😅 Keep up the good work and happy new year
Love little Irish and the transformation it has gone through. Amazing job Lee. I was just looking at momo’s website, i don’t see the option for changing the coloring of the momo or the centre strip. Also it looks like you have a leather Porsche logo in the centre. Were these ordered from momo or got it done aftermarket?thank you
Love this Lee. These cars are made to personalized! It’s all about carefully selecting modifications that actually improve things - whether aesthetically or performance wise. You’ve done a ripping job with it.
Hey Dude, Like your Videos so far ! Very informative and entertaining . Im looking foreward to get My first 996 Soon 👍🏽 Im Working for Porsche as a Chef in the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen . I like That colour on your 996 and really would like to Imagine That Green with a GT3 MK1 Aerokit .. It would Look sooo awesone 🥰 I like your set up also , it has a touch of old school 👍🏽👍🏽 Mixed with top mods ! Great ! Keep up your Good Spirit ..
Thank you for the kind words! Great to know you work at the Museum, I was there last weekend for Sound Nacht. Best wishes and hopefully you'll get that 996 very soon!
Great mods Lee! The stance of ”Little Irish” is just perfect👍 Personally I would love to see more modifications on the 996 cars out there. As a reference I would argue that the common mods of the 964:s has benefited that platform, and those cars would not be as popular as they are without them.
Any issues with the DAB/FM splitter on the PCCM+ unit Lee? My fitter ran into trouble getting DAB reception. Great video. Always a great source of info!
Curious about your gorgeous ducktail. I wonder how it handles water/rainwater that enters through the vents/openings. If it rains hard, doesn't it pour into the engine and fan underneath?
Great job, the car looks well. For me the biggest change's are the wheels and rear wing.. I love the whole look, probably 1 of the nicest 996's I've seen. Good job m8 👍
Hi Lee, always enjoy the videos! I've a very well specced 997.2 C2, Manual, i've been thinking about LW flywheel when it's clutch replacement time, has it made much of a difference in your 996?
Thanks Matthew. I think a LWF makes a nice difference, change-ups are quicker, the engine feels sharper. Plus it gives a nice GT3-esque rattle at idle (though non-car people think your car is broken) and doesn't make clutch control difficult around town… I'd say go for it.
Using light weight fly with stock clutch is not good idea bcz dual mass flywheel is thier for to absorb vibrations and act like damper. U need different clutch to use with lightweight flywheel
Hello, if you had Tiptronic installed but wanted to change the steering wheel and fit one with nice gear changing tabs which one would you go to without fitting something awkward and aftermarket. The thing would be to maintain your car as close as possible as if it had been fitted with it originally. Thank you?
Flawless presentation of 'Little Irish'. Informative, to the point, engaging. Bravo. I subscribed based on the c4s but this was excellent. Out of interest. Do you keep 'LI' indoors or outdoors during winter?
The Momo Mod 7 wrapped in leather is perfect for street use. The alcantara 996 cup car wheels (no longer made I think?) in street cars mandates gloves to save value at this point. I feel the 996 shift boot feels better in hand compared to a 997 drop in. However, I think you're spot on about the visual aesthetic.
Hi Lee thanks for another great presentation. I love the Fuchs wheels and the side and rear decals - which I will at some stage mirror on my own 1998 C2 (did you do those yourself?). I fitted an Alpine DAB system some time ago (INE-W925R) - mainly for SatNav & Planet Rock (only available via DAB). Focus for me in 2021 will be refurb of the leather seats. Take care - Merry Crimbo and hopefully catch up with further 996 adventures in 2021 - TTFN
man i own a 1999 996 convertible and the convertible makes it look so wonky:( it’s SOOOOOOOO GOOD, non convertible, holy fuck, is that the s? or the turbo? or? yeah, just saying dam shits hot
Great and interesting video as always Lee. One observation I’d make on your comment on the baulky nature of your gear shift when cold; I upgraded my shifter to the 997 GT3 unit (Not quite so short as the Porsche “SSK” but usefully slicker than the 996 item but crucially (For me) the GT3 item has metal bearings rather than plastic. Anyway I too found the shift to be problematic when cold until I swapped out the gearbox oil for nice new Millers Nanodrive 75W90. Absolutely transformed the shift and probably one of my best “Bang for the buck” improvements. I also agree on the shifter knob so changed mine for an aluminium finished Rennline item machined from aluminium. I find the spherical “Ball” fits my hand better than the factory item and the unit itself can be adjusted lower down the shifter if preferred so slightly reducing the throw further. I’d recommend it for look and feel though accept some may prefer the “Factory” look. Oh and since this is likely your last video before Christmas, hope you have a great Christmas and that Santa brings something nice for Little Irish!
Interesting, I just bought a 10/97 built 996 manual RHD ex Sth Africa here in Australia. Same fried eggs on silver, which I love. I notice that I have the same phone aerial on the back of the roof .. and I wondered about having this removed. Do you know if this is drilled through, and if there is a factory plug hole that can be used to fill the hole for when it is removed??? i was quoted about $3000 to remove and repaint the roof....wondering what other options I have here....
Fabspeed muffler bypass pipes are by far the cheapest and best sounding exhaust mod for a 996. I have them on my '99 carrera- saves around 20 (or so) kilos, adds about 25 whp and 30 torque at the top of the revs. I could not recommend these more, when I show up to car meets people think I'm arriving in a gt3.
I would change the colant cap before the tank. Aslo common problem,. Had mine wrongly diagnosed for cracked tank about 8 years ago at a Porsche dealership. Tested changing the cap and it was a lax spring, still no leeks 8 years later...
Intercoolers on 996 turbo? Necessary when you increase BHP and torque with ECU remap and others mods? Plenums? I've read that they do very little in terms of performance gains.
Love the car and upgrades. I’m looking at buying me first 911- and debating whether to buy a stock 997 c4s, or a 996 and customize over time as you’ve done. Any thoughts/advice?
Looking great so far! Seats and shift knob would look great with the Momo wheel. From what I've seen on Insta, Car Bone over in Poland make nice shift knobs...
Stupid question of the PCCM. Ive been using Google Maps on my phone. I do the routes beforehand in the computer and then send them to my phone. But using Google Maps if I miss a corner and take a wrong road the bloody program recalcs a new route and I miss the roads Ive planned to drive. Has happened to me many times (yeah, Im better driver than navigator, hopefully). With the PCCM and its navi can you easily create a driving route that keeps its interim navigation stops without recalculating. I seldom aim to a place but rather want to drive specific B-roads. With Google Maps it it recalcs I can loose the original plan for good. It really pisses me off. Maybe I just do something wrong. But anyway Im also thinking about the PCCM to my 996.
Lee, first of all - kudos for taste in your mods. Secondly, I think I need new suspension in my 2004 C4S. Thinking of KW3 vs Ohlins R&T vs Bilstein (dunno which yet). What would you recommend for 95% road use (but exercising whenever possible 😉), one long trip (2000miles+) and odd 5 track days a year? Thirdly, I love the MOMO products but weren’t you concerned about not having an airbag anymore? Cheers! Happy Xmas!
Another great video Lee! Love the CSR ducktail. It would look perfect on my GTS. Do you have any issue with rain water going places it shouldn’t be? Curious, why do you say new top mounts are a must? Thank you. Keep up the great job!
Thank you kindly. Have to say the duck has been great in the wet(!), in early spring we had a LOT of rain on the UK south coast here and the car hadn't moved for about ten days and was spluttery and jumpy for ten mins but other than that it's been fine. I've not worried about it.
Thanks for the feedback, yes it does have that GT3-esque rattle, prepare for non-care friends to think your car is broken though if you go for it. Makes me laugh every time I hear it!
Nice video! So you mentioned your 996 shifts funky when the gear box is cold. Have you tried changing your gearbox fluid out? I had a very similar issue with my 997. I change my gear fluid to the OEM Porsche recommend fluid for my 997.1 and wow! It made a massive improvement in my gear box! Mine would shift funky in 1st and 2nd while cold. Now from cold start after the secondary air injection turns off I drive of my driveway to damn near perfect shifts and when the gear box comes up to temp is is buttery smooth! And might I add, it comes up to temp much much faster vs the previous fluid! It was a very simple DIY and made the world of difference! Love your 996 happy motoring!!!!
Little Irish is one of my favorite 996s. I appreciate how special you have made it.
Thanks for making these videos. I’m looking at buying a 996 C2 pre 1999 mod in 2021. Look forward to more valuable input
maybe a comparison between all 911.. 996 , 997 etc
On my 996 v.1, I have the short shifter, LN IMS fix, 18" Techart Fuchs style black rims, Millie Miglia exhaust, fiberglass duck tail, Rennline aluminum pedals, and intake mod. Probably a day late and a dollar short, but lowering the engine is the way to go replacing the expansion tank. Don’t buy the cheap tank, casting flash leaks. I went thru 2, and ended up using adhesive shrink wrap to seal between the hose and tank. Oh, hose clamp tools are a big plus! lol boring not 911 interior. Literally every car before had a more boring interior...

Guys getting those Porsche great driving 996s turning them into individual artforms. Yours is the biz and awesome, what a unique car. Great vid.
Get those black center caps already man! Love the Irish :)

Appreciate the heads up, unfortunately I changed my cap back in September…
Intercoolers on 996 turbo? Necessary when you increase BHP and torque with ECU remap and others mods? Plenums? I've read that they do very little in terms of performance gains.
Fantastic mods. Try the gundo hack , save you some quids on the exhaust. 😊
I can't believe you refitted those rusty old bolts in your carbon ducktail!
That's a great looking 911 but with what you've done underneath, a great driving one too! 😎😎
Do you notice the lughtweight flywheel in that it revs quicker in neutral or any other way? Cheers John
Love the car and upgrades. I’m looking at buying me first 911- and debating whether to buy a stock 997 c4s, or a 996 and customize over time as you’ve done. Any thoughts/advice?
What Settings are you you using on your KW V3s bump and rebound for street use . How is the ride vs stock? Cheers
Interestingly you have done the same as I have done to mine👌
With the upgrade to Momo steering wheel does your horn still work? What hub adapter did you use?
Have you considered Kline exhaust? Lovely sound and they look good too.
Cheers! Happy Xmas!
Hi mate what exhaust are thinking of changing to? I looking at doing this to my 2000 3.4 l manual
haven't even watched the video yet but gave thumbs up because video is 9:11 long. noice!
Hi Lee. Where do you find somewhere that can supply the steering wheel with the green insert or did you have that custom done later?
I had that custom done, most specialists will be able to help you with this.
Love the color. I never have seen one in person. Does anyone have the production number on that color?
Could you put in a light between the two rear lights like on the 992 or that concept car you were looking at..Great vid cheers.
I do love a light bar it has to be said…
Not on a narrow-body - at least not with a factory part. That part was made for a wide-body.
Can I ask , how did you install the steering and does your horn work . Also does your airbag light come on?
Another great video Lee! Love the CSR ducktail. It would look perfect on my GTS. Do you have any issue with rain water going places it shouldn’t be? Curious, why do you say new top mounts are a must? Thank you. Keep up the great job!
Thank you kindly. Have to say the duck has been great in the wet(!), in early spring we had a LOT of rain on the UK south coast here and the car hadn't moved for about ten days and was spluttery and jumpy for ten mins but other than that it's been fine. I've not worried about it.
Hi Lee, is the short shifter a 996 part or 997? £300 sounds a lot unless it's for the GT3 shifter with metal bushings?
Where can I get the horn button for that momo steering wheel just ordered mine. Cheers!
When you swapped the steering wheel on your 996, did the hub kit come with resistors for the airbag sensor?
Good question John, I didn't fit the wheel but there's no airbag light on on the dash?
Is your 3rd brake light visible for cars behind you?
Hi does the lightweight flywheel make any more noise than the stock item i.e. Rattling on tickover thanks for the vid
Thanks for the feedback, yes it does have that GT3-esque rattle, prepare for non-care friends to think your car is broken though if you go for it. Makes me laugh every time I hear it!
I like your Car, looks great. Original colour? Greetings from Germany
Any engine performance mods planned?
The wheels look insane
The wheel is on point... any chance you could replace the seats? My car OCD kicks in when i see old leather seats :-)
Oh the seats will be going for sure, I despise them as much as you!
Any issues putting it through an MOT having removed the oem airbag steering wheel?
No, though the wheel went on not long after the MOT, so I'll be able to give a proper answer in the coming months!
Yes I changed that around a year ago, it made only a minimal improvement I'm afraid!
What tyres are you running on those Fuchs wheels ?
Still looking great dude 👌😎
Thaks Ian!
