Hmmm I would just restart the song all over. I couldn’t point out the best of those but Saga’s The Perfectionist did that. So did Rush’s Little Victory.
This can be a long list... What decade? Goodness... I'll start with these..Little Lies Little Bird by Annie Lennox Eurythmics, Life by LA by Ambrosia, You Win Again and One by Bee Gees, Electric Blue by Icehouse
Don't know if you saw my messages yesterday on YT and Twitter but jstn case, I was the 1st to wish you Happy Birthday. So let me say it again... Happy Anniversary of your Arrival, Adam and thanks for all you do with your life. Even though I'm not esp a metal head, I have listened to that song dozens of times since, as recently as last week.
The Drum part from In the Air Tonight The lyrics from Drops of Jupiter - “I’m afraid that she might think of me as Plain ol' Jane told a story about a man Who was too afraid to fly so he never did land.” I found them so profound Stevie Nicks end vocals of the Live version of Rhiannon The end guitar solo on Telegraph Road The intro to the only version of Life Is A Highway. Then I’d have to play the whole song
She's incredible. There are a few bands that successfully reinvented themselves in the 80s and Heart is right at the top of that list. Ann's still singing all these years later and her "Stairway To Heaven" rendition at the Kennedy Center Honors a few years ago brought Robert Plant to tears. Amazing!
.....LOOOOOVED how Robert was jitterin' in his Chair, eyes BULGIN', when Ann hit that note; I rewound that part NUMEROUS times! ....She knew she HAD him, by the.....ha-HAAA!!
Update on your book! I talked to Kenny's manager yesterday and he is on vacation and she's going to have him sign a few and send them as soon as he's back. I appreciate you Robster!
Robert Plant was actually crying at the fact that Jason Bonham was on drums. On a side note Plant has made it no secret that he actually hates Stairway to Heaven…not that he wasn’t impressed by Heart’s cover.
That voice is one of the greatest female voices in Rock. I think she’s the one that made that song great. Thank you Anne for gifting us with your voice.
I was trying to be nice to her competition 🤣 and we do have to consider Pat Benatar and Cindy Loper are also way up there. Hard to choose but I will agree that her voice is amazing 🤩
When Ann said "I don't have relative pitch", I nearly fell off my chair and my respect for her just shot up ten fold. To me, that means the conscious work she has to put in to get the result she does is insane. I love Ann Wilson, the queen of belt!
Adam your respect and admiration come through in your interviews and you manage to not be gushy or controlling. Very appreciated. I love it when you told Ann that your favorite song from the album turned out to be one that was written by the band. Perfect. You are this generation's Kasey Kasem, Dick Clark....
I also saw Heart, during their ‘Bad Animals’ tour at the Cobo Hall arena in Detroit, while stationed up there in the mid-late 80s. Only time I ever saw them, so can’t really honestly compare any of their concerts/performances from another, but definitely enjoyed seeing them live though. Their live performance of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ at the Kennedy Center’ was beyond epic!😏
Me too! Loved that concert. My seats were so close to the stage and right in front of the speakers. Literally blew my ear drums! My hearing never came back to what it was after that. Lol! But great concert!
Although an 80s kid through and through I always preferred 70s Heart. I mean, I still followed them in the 80s and bought their albums (I regularly blasted If Looks Could Kill in the car in high school), but songs like Crazy On You and Barracuda have always been the pinnacle for me when it comes to Heart.
🤘🏼🤘🏼 *Yes, those first two albums were flawlessly amazing. After that, kinda spotty. Bebe LeStrange had a few great songs on it. Then, it got safe & cheesy. Roger Fisher never gets the credit he deserves!* 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Eighties overkill.Perfect description from Ann.She is one of a kind.Amazing voice. Both Ann and Nancy admit the band had lost its way during the 80s.They like many bands got sucked into big hair and big ballads. If it wasn't a Diane Warren song it had to sound like one. That being said their back catalogue of the 70s is killer and they'll always be one of my favourite bands.
I loved Heart when I was little. My mom took me to see them in concert when I was 7 years old. It was my first concert. I thought they were magical. A few years later, my mom had to go into rehab to deal with drug addiction issues. She didn't want to tell me where she was really going, so she told me she had been invited to audition to be a Heart backup singer and would be traveling. I knew that she wasn't telling the truth, but I still spent the entire weekend "practicing" with her. To this day, I think of my mom when I hear Heart's music.
Although a different after story, my mom took me to see Heart as my first concert as well, in Houston. I loved seeing her love the music so much. Thanks for sharing.
The part about your Mom taking you to see Heart for your first concert when you were 7. Probably because you both love them. Well, that reminded me of me. Except I took him to see Rush in 2008. He liked Rush because Rush is Dad's favorite band. Think of that of completely different level ov vocal talent! Geddy Lee and Ann Wilson. 😆 Ann is in the Holy Trinity of Vocalists.
Even after all these years the scream still makes the hair on the back of me neck stand up. Ann is one of the few people that not only makes the song her own, but completely owns it!
Loved Heart since the 70's, and the first time I heard "Dog and Butterfly", I melted into the ground. I love Ann's voice as much as I love Karen Carpenters voice. Ann is a true Icon!!!
At the time that this came out I was a kid having some ugly ear problems. I was effectively deaf on one side for over a year until the problem was mostly fixed. I remember my mom driving me to a specialist over an hour away, & my 30 mother singing along with Ann.(Mom was no Ann, but she had a nice voice.) Even with my hearing issues I could rock along with Heart too. Screaming along off key with Mom in the car helped that boy get through a rough time, & I will always love Alone because of that.
Heart Ann and Nancy of always touched my soul. Thanks for the Music. I'm sure I would have liked to connect with Ann for life. So much mental stimulus from her.
As the younger sibling in the 80s my older sister was the one with all the posters and such but I had one of Ann and Nancy and it was my pride and joy. Ann still to this day in my opinion has the greatest female powerhouse voice I have ever experienced. I fell in love with her as a kid and I still hold her as one of my favorite singers of all time.
AMEN! My sentiments about Ann, exactly! Ann Wilson is the most powerful female vocalist on the planet and my personal favorite! My favorite male vocalist is Burton Cummings of The Guess Who. My favorite guitarist is David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Dave is the Grandmaster of that instrument in my book! My favorite all-around front-man performer who is worldclass in his talent with vocals and guitar is the one and only Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad.
Her voice is an instrument all of its own. Akin to a Stradivarius, or Gibson Les Paul. Finely tuned and cared for. Epic, beautiful, unmatched in all music genres. If her voice could be bottled and sold, it would sell for millions of $$$. Just beautiful.
No one like the beautiful and talented Wilson sisters. As a pre-teen to my early teen years, I heard them in the 70s on the radio and immediately fell in love with their music and their beauty. The 80s were iffy for me though I did like some of their songs. But my heart will always be the 70s quintessential Heart fan. That still doesn't take away one iota of praise and enjoyment every time Heart rings in my ears or blesses me with their live performances. I love you, Ann and Nancy.
"Women Who Rock!" Ann Wilson and Heart epitomize that phrase. So much respect for them. Alone is an amazing song that holds up through time. Ann seemed very down to earth.
@@markmiwurdz202 It was on Brigade, the next album (the one with All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You). But, yeah it rocks along with Wild Child and The Night on Brigade.

As much as I liked Heart before this interview has left me loving Ann Wilson and Heart even more. She's completely humble and modest while not denying her and the band's talent and place in the Rock and Roll music world...just honest. Thank you so much for this!
My lord She here is the most amazingly youthful 72 year old I’ve ever seen! LEGEND and also considering she’s only been sober since she was 59, just wow… what a Life path indeed and we’ve all benefited from it for decades 🙌🏻❤️🙏🏻🎶💪🏻💥👏🏻
You can tell by looking at how young *he* is that this was done quite a few years ago. Still, she has to have been past fifty, and she looks stunning. It's just crazy, when you realize she was in her mid sixties at that Kennedy Center Led Zeppelin tribute.
She has a great voice. As a teeny tiny child in the 70s, it drew my attention, even at that age. Her voice seemed so otherworldly. To this day, when I hear Magic Man and Crazy on You, it takes me back immediately to those days and how I really liked those songs.
Her voice, it spoke to me... I always have sung with a natural vibrato and it wasn't always represented in the music I heard around me. But her voice helped me accept mine a bit more. :). So blessed that my parents loved Heart in the 70s and my dad bought me their cassettes in the 80s :)
Ann Wilson and Nancy's music is still instantly recognised from the first note and absolutely enjoyed till the last. Ann's Scream will always be her signature to fantastic real good old rock. Love Heart's music forever.
My wife and I saw Ann and her new band's current tour in LA and in Atlanta. One show was inside a theater while the other one was outdoors in an amphitheater. Both shows were amazing. The new album "Fierce Bliss" is Excellent. Greed, Black Wing, A moment in Heaven and the rocking' cover of Eurythmic's Missionary Man rank as some of Ann's best solo work to date. Her touring band is top notch.
I was 30, a huge Heart fan and remember vividly my feelings when I first saw Alone. WOW! They were gorgeous, the sound was impeccable and it brought back the memories of the mid-70s. Bands come and go, but there will never be anyone comparable to the Wilson sisters
OMG I love this woman. Her voice grabs you and throws you across the room. I've loved Heart since my mom had the Dreamboat Annie album in '75. I listened to Magic Man and Crazy On You over and over when I was a kid. She and Nancy were heros to us girls and like nothing I'd ever heard before or since.
I still get chills, every time I listen to "Alone" by Heart. That note that Ann belts out is one of those that could break glass, or at least blow some speakers. Ann Wilson has a wonderful voice and is a tremendous talent. Thank you for this interview. 💜
Still and beautiful woman with a powerful voice. No one yet has come close to matching her on Alone, not sure that anyone will. I was more a New Wave girl then, but would always turn up the radio when Heart came on, even their 70’s hits because they were just that good.
I remember when Crazy on You and Magic Man came out. It was like the earth shifted; Ann's voice was so powerful and there was nothing like them on the radio. Ann and Nancy have always been my favorite women who rock. I finally got to see them in 2019 and you would never know that Ann was 69 and Nancy was 65. Alone is my favorite song of theirs from the 80s. Ann's voice is just so full of emotion, it fills me with emotion in my gut.
I bought Bad Animals (and saw her in concert! In the late 80's!) for "Alone". And that IS one of the greatest screams in music history! It can still give me shivers up and down my spine. There is another great power ballady type song on Bad Animals that I always loved "Wait for an Answer". I heard her sing that in that concert I saw and was floored by it. Love ya Ann! Oh and her performance at the Kennedy Center for Led Zep? WOW!!
Heart had wonderful 80's work. Musicianship on their 70's "Crazy On You" with Ann, Nancy and Roger Fisher was mind-blowing. This is crazy good guitar and vocal work. I like one of their obscure less than successful work "Private Audition" that had Ann being playful with the vocal and Nancy more subtly playing. It is not their biggest record but it was adventurous and brave to release. A different side Heart. Nancy's 80's "These Dreams" was a sonic masterpiece.
When this song came out I just couldn't get enough of it. And it's the first Heart song I ever sat there mesmerized at how good her voice sounds. It's a classic song by one of the classic voices of my generation.
What to say? Well Heart 💜 every time I hear “How Can I Get You Alone?”, you already do. It’s a song that grabs your full attention. A song that reaches your emotions while you’re listening to it and everything else doesn’t matter. Few songs can do that. There are many you enjoy listing to but few that drown out the world like Alone does. ❤️🌹
Unfortunately I am so far away that I'll never, and have never seen Heart play live, Ann's vocals are so powerful and just command you to listen, Ann, you're a true Rock Goddess!
I've always said Ann Wilson is one of the greatest female vocalist of all time. She has the pipes and shoots straight to the emotional heart of a song (no pun intended). Nancy is an amazing guitarist and I can't think of anyone who could match Ann's vocals, but Nancy makes it look easy. I've always been partial to Heart's seventies stuff myself, and Magic Man in particular --- though Nancy's Treat Me Well is on my all time top 10 and has a cult following today. If you've never given a listen to Ann's cover of tell it like it is, you're missing out!
Ann Wilson; an icon and still one of the best female rock vocalists. I had no idea that song wasn't created by the sisters and their team. Kudos to the writing team for putting it out there. After this and the Aerosmith tale it seems there was a necessary trend of outside writers helping to inject new life into ongoing acts from the 60's and 70's and helping to extend their careers through the 80's and beyond.
Ann really pulls you in to her personal space, what an attractive soul and the Professor handled this interview like a pro. Great job, great episode ✌️
Your're absolutely right about that scream. EVERY-SINGLE-TIME I hear Alone and Ann belts out that scream, a chill goes all the way up my spine and EXPLODES out the top of my head and my eyes tear up. The entire song is an emotional rush.
I love Ann and Heart.Such a powerful voice. She knows how to sing a song. When she sings someone else's song she makes it her song. Her voice is as strong today as it was 45 years ago.Keep on rocking ladies.
You're not alone - I listememd to other versions and you totally nailed it with "nobody touches ann wilson on that song". I'm 56ys old and still get goosebumbs all over when hearing her sing that song. She unveils her soul in that and I can honestly say that up to this day "it chills me to the bone" everytime I hear it!!
Heart is one of my favorite bands! The rendition of Stairway to Heaven is just one of my all-time favorite covers! I also love the expression on Jimmy Page‘s face throughout the whole song! It’s just great!
I never was a fan of Heart, but having learned more about the band, I can place them in history where they belong. I listen to them ocassionally. Thanks, Professor of Rock, for your knowledge and videos!
Crazy thing about Heart is that they could hit it as hard and dirty as anyone, but could also belt out some real quality ballads. There are very, VERY few bands that can be so iconic doing both. Ann Wilson's voice is a big part of it; her voice is so incredible and versatile that she could probably sing the ingredients on the back of a medicine bottle and it would blow me away.
That scream was mind blowing cant think of anything else that comes close to the impact and the way she plays with it while at its highest octave The whole song was so clever starting out slow and soft then explosive back to soft again and that scream was so perfectly timed to catch everyone of guard the same way slow and soft to explosive did simply incredible and sounds as good as it did the day i heard it Stunning
I've enjoyed Heart throughout the years and still can be mesmerized when Ann and Nancy are on stage. Due to the nostalgia and personal experiences tied to the early albums, I tend to go there for my favorites. Roger Fisher is a big part of that too. ✌️
@@ProfessorofRock Ditto. I grew up in the 70s and was 11 when Magic Man was popular, and I had it on a K-tel album, I think it was called "Pure Gold"! Then, I was in the car with my parents and Crazy On You came on (I'd not heard it before) and I immediately knew it was the same band. So, of course I begged them to buy me the Dreamboat Annie album and that very well may have been my first album (except the K-tel & Ronco compilations) as I'd mostly just acquired 45s up to that point. Celine and Carrie can sing Alone all they want, but Ann is the best female vocalist of all time. IMHO.
I look at it this way. I would consider Ann Wilson right up there with Freddie Mercury. They just NAIL it. Others that try to sing a song that they have done always fall short! Love your stuff! Thank you!
Heart is one of the best bands ever! They are my favorite band, and have been for decades! Ann Wilson is a category by herself, I do not see ANYONE topping Ann! Go Ann, and Heart! Phillip
These Dreams on the Heart album was surprisingly headed up by her guitarist sister Nancy. Much softer voice; but still epic... Check Nancy's insane range at the end of the song when she performed it on "Live In Seattle" [Added] In that video, notice how close each lady is to her mic. Ann has to stand at arms length, so her legendary megaphone chest voice can finesse those harmonies in... Haha. Awesome duo.
I remember the first time I heard this song, I was 14 years old and it completely blew my mind!! I get very emotional every time I listen to ‘Alone’ or watch the video. Thanks for another great story of a great song.
I loved Heart through the years, even when others were turning them off. I’ve got all their albums and routinely play their latest album. They still can rock it! Plus, I may have had an innocent crush on both of them ;)
Ann Wilson has the best female rock n roll voice of all time for my money. I never knew Alone had two other earlier versions, that was interesting to learn, but John Stamos has nothing on Ann Wilson.
I met Ann and Nancy on Bourbon St in New Orleans. I was 17 , we went to the Dungeon and ran into Jack Blades from Night Ranger on the way there , he came with us too. They were really nice people . I enjoyed the time with them. I wonder if they remember that ?
Heart's hard-driving rock in the 1970's was one of my first concerts. About ten years later, I saw them again and Ann's scream in Alone literally gave me chills! It still does. It always struck me as odd that their opening act for that second show was Michael Bolton. Quite a contrast of music styles.
Michael Bolton was actually a rocker before hitting it big with the ballads. I give you exhibit A: ua-cam.com/video/Ga_reU5lasQ/v-deo.html I love his ballads, but I really wish he had hit it big with his rock songs.
Poll: What is the moment from a song that you had to rewind and listen to over and over because it was so great?
Hmmm I would just restart the song all over. I couldn’t point out the best of those but Saga’s The Perfectionist did that. So did Rush’s Little Victory.

As much as I liked Heart before this interview has left me loving Ann Wilson and Heart even more. She's completely humble and modest while not denying her and the band's talent and place in the Rock and Roll music world...just honest. Thank you so much for this!
Yes folks, we actually had bands like this all over the radio back in the day.
She doesn’t look 72 at all!
So I’m not the only one to have noticed this? She looks amazing for 72. And sounds amazing as she always has.
You can tell by looking at how young *he* is that this was done quite a few years ago. Still, she has to have been past fifty, and she looks stunning. It's just crazy, when you realize she was in her mid sixties at that Kennedy Center Led Zeppelin tribute.
Love Ann and Nancy Wilson and Heart ! They don't make them like that anymore. Love from Norway.
She has a great voice. As a teeny tiny child in the 70s, it drew my attention, even at that age. Her voice seemed so otherworldly. To this day, when I hear Magic Man and Crazy on You, it takes me back immediately to those days and how I really liked those songs.
What a Voice She Has.
One of the Best Female Rock Voices🎸
Ann and Nancy are Rock Legend’s.
Her voice, it spoke to me... I always have sung with a natural vibrato and it wasn't always represented in the music I heard around me. But her voice helped me accept mine a bit more. :). So blessed that my parents loved Heart in the 70s and my dad bought me their cassettes in the 80s :)
Saw them a few times. Best female singer I’ve ever heard.
Love Heart. Both the 70's and 80's and even the 90's. Saw them 4 times in concert
I was 30, a huge Heart fan and remember vividly my feelings when I first saw Alone. WOW! They were gorgeous, the sound was impeccable and it brought back the memories of the mid-70s. Bands come and go, but there will never be anyone comparable to the Wilson sisters
Me too. I was blown away first listen.
I was 18, and I feel the same way, I was just scared to let anyone know I was a lesbian ( the part about them being gorgeous) back then! Lol
The Wilson sisters are among the likes of Led Zeppelin and The Beatles. They are the best at what they do.
WOW!!
Interviewing Ann Wilson. Holy cripes! What a crazy dream of mine!
I saw Heart last summer and they haven't lost a thing in 40 years. Such an amazing talented band.
Ann is THE best female singer ever. Period.
I have to agree on that one.
Agree!
Add frida from abba
To that list
Love, treat me well
Love all of Heart's music!
One of the greatest voices in rock. I hope they go on tour again soon.
Ann really pulls you in to her personal space, what an attractive soul and the Professor handled this interview like a pro. Great job, great episode ✌️
Thank you!
My favourite rock song of all time and that scream OMG just my favourite moment in any rock song I've ever heard. Thank you Heart.
No doubt, an absolute classic…'These Dreams' is still my favourite Heart song but they are such an amazing band.
I like all of Heart’s catalog. I was into Heart from the 70s, but when I heard Alone, I was blown away by the vocals.
Me too. And the arrangement.
It's truly amazing. Perfect vocal performance.
Exactly!
She’s 72 now, amazing she can still perform and good, we’re the lucky ones
I loved Heart at the 70s, and I loved them in the 80s. For different reasons. I also love a good comeback.
That scream was mind blowing cant think of anything else that comes close to the impact and the way she plays with it while at its highest octave
The whole song was so clever starting out slow and soft then explosive back to soft again and that scream was so perfectly timed to catch everyone of guard the same way slow and soft to explosive did simply incredible and sounds as good as it did the day i heard it
Stunning
I was born in 1969 I got to hear the beginning of so many artists over the year and Heart has been by far the best vocals..
I've enjoyed Heart throughout the years and still can be mesmerized when Ann and Nancy are on stage. Due to the nostalgia and personal experiences tied to the early albums, I tend to go there for my favorites. Roger Fisher is a big part of that too. ✌️
That vocal from Ann still gives me chills in 2023 - I have listened to that song easily 1000 times since it was released and I never grow tired of it.
The Wilson sisters had me at "Crazy On You".
Me too! And Magic Man.
Same here.
IMHO.
Dude, She is the real deal, hands down! The Waylon Jennings of rock!
I look at it this way. I would consider Ann Wilson right up there with Freddie Mercury. They just NAIL it. Others that try to sing a song that they have done always fall short! Love your stuff! Thank you!
There is a story where Heart toured with Queen in the 70’s and Mercury asking Ann if Magic Man was about him 😂
@@jt1929 sounds like Freddie!
@@scottbaker7166 Yes, he starts out saying “Ann, darling”!
They would’ve made an amazing duet had that ever happened.
Heart is one of the best bands ever! They are my favorite band, and have been for decades! Ann Wilson is a category by herself, I do not see ANYONE topping Ann! Go Ann, and Heart! Phillip
Heart is my favorite female group, bar none.
Much as Ann's vocals are significant to the song, the piano piece is so key to the mood of the song. It's timeless & unforgettable.
These Dreams on the Heart album was surprisingly headed up by her guitarist sister Nancy. Much softer voice; but still epic... Check Nancy's insane range at the end of the song when she performed it on "Live In Seattle"
[Added] In that video, notice how close each lady is to her mic.
Plus, I may have had an innocent crush on both of them ;)
my favorite off that album, was after alone.."there's the girl"
I give you exhibit A: ua-cam.com/video/Ga_reU5lasQ/v-deo.html
I love his ballads, but I really wish he had hit it big with his rock songs.
It gives me goosebumps all over and it is a great moment.
I saw Heart/Mr. Mister at Battelle Hall Columbus, OH. 12/11/87. Bad Animals Tour. Great show.
