  • Directed by Marilyn Agrelo. You' ll be hard-pressed to find a more unusual circus, or father-daughter performing duo. The Moscow Cat Theatre is just that: a travelling show of cats that perform amazing tricks for the owners who love and train them. Everybody in Russia may be used to seeing cats perform tricks, as the theatreâ s manager explains in this funny, charming film, but felines walking tightropes, crossing the stage on giant balls and walking upside down is not a common sight in most countries. As balalaika and accordion circus score plays in the background, Creative Director Vladimir and daughter Maria combine their love of cats and stage to create a captivating act and illustrate the tricks of the trade â giving new meaning to the expression ' herding cats' .

I saw them when they toured the US. It was wonderful. I had seen no videos of the show, and didn't know what to expect. I was flabbergasted. You can tell these felines are loved and cared for. And, there are dogs on stage with the cats, too! Cats don't do what they don't want to do, as anyone who lives with a cat will tell you. This is a must-see show when it comes to your town.

Anyone who thinks these cats are being abused obviously doesn't know anything about cats. One woman here said she even went backstage to see the cats and they were happy and healthy. I don't know if it's true that he doesn't spay or neuter any of the cats, but there are lots of people who don't spay and neuter their pets who allow their cats to have litters that wind up producing more and more homeless cats. At least this guy is keeping them all. I know Samantha Martin makes a point of saying hers are all rescues and are spayed and neutered in her act. I don't know this guy's position on that.
For those who don't understand what the motivation is, hello? Do you not see the treats in their hands? Lol. Treats and lots of praise and petting. My cats do tricks without even giving them treats. I just have to say: "Oh, you're such a good, smart boy!" and pet them. Very tortuous, indeed!
And I am highly suspicious of these people who are claiming they recognize all these weird torturing methods that I do not see and have never heard of and make no sense to anyone who knows about cats. Makes me wonder what THEY are doing to cats. :/

As a cat owner, I'm amazed. Training our cats to do what we want instead of what they want and have trained us to do for them would be a huge consciousness challenge. I have always maintained that cats can't be trained!!!! Now I'll have to change that to "cats can be trained but only if they want to be trained!"

Domestic cats are just that, they're domestic animals and we've been living together for thousands of years; they're good critters and a joy to be around and I think that they feel the same way about us.

I saw the MOSCOW CAT CIRCUS in Nov 2006 with friends Flori & Nelli (she's from Russia) and my son Michael at LA's Ebel Theatre. We're all cat lovers.
What a MEOWY incredible evening that's a must see for all feline lovers and yes, even canine fans who think cats are worthless, dumb, stubborn fluff-balls.
Yes, cats can be trained. There were over 30 cats in the "Moscow Cat Circus" of all colors & ages & abilities. It takes 1yr of training for each of the multitude of cats. Amazing!!!

When the cat jumps from that high in the air and the girl catches her.. how AWESOME IS THAT?!
That's absolute trust there. The woman trusts the cat will jump on the platform (and not on her head) and the cat trusts that she will catch him when he jumps. You have to spend a LOT of time with an animal to establish that kind of trust

This circus is not associated with cruelty. The cats are their livelihood and to have healthy cats is most important for the show. In fact, I'm betting that a few sleep with the handlers. They aren't lions. I'm a cat trainer and the cats love every bit of it.

Cats... obeying commands..? I think my mind just imploded... I can't even teach my cat to stop crapping on the floor, while these guys are walking tightropes and juggling and flying and God knows what else! They must be bribing these cats, or maybe they're secretly cat whisperers or something. And yes, I'll agree that this Maria girl is quite the looker.

I've trained my cat to sit on a stool when I'm in the kitchen cooking to stop him tripping me over and I've also trained him to come to the door when I whistle. I've only had success getting cats to do things with positive reinforcement, although you can stop undesirable behaviors with negative reinforcement.

Temple Grandin says that cats cannot be successfully trained by negative reinforcement. (I think this includes the big cats by the way and a lack of understanding there has led to many deaths and injuries). If the cat is elderly with arthritis and can't climb in the cat box you may want to fix up other arrangements. If the cat is mad at you because you don't love it, it will pee on the floor. If the cat loves you and pees on the floor, it is because of insecurity and wants to mark the territory so it feels safer. In that case you will assist the cat by putting "rescue remedy" drops into his water dish or in the wet cat food. Never raise your hand to an animal and you will gain a lot of trust.

Most companion animals don't get to do what they were bred for; I had a Dachshund and he was a marvelous dog but to make a house pet out of an animal who would have been much happier tracking and even KILLING small game on a regular basis is what is really cruel.
I now have a cat and he's also terrific but I can tell that he'd rather be doing something, ANYTHING than just lying around all day waiting for me to rub and coo over him.

It's a compromise, the cat allows you to live and see some of the cool stuff they can do in exchange for food, fame, and a warm home kept at exactly 75.6 degrees.
