Researcher Explains Why Cats May Like Their Owners as Much as Dogs | WIRED

- Cats are famously temperamental and are generally considered to be less loyal and social than dogs. But recent research suggests that cats actually have similar levels of attachment to their human caregivers as dogs and infants. WIRED's Arielle Pardes spoke with Kristyn Vitale from Oregon State University's Human-Animal Interaction Lab to find out more.

« Because they are cats »
Such brave. So hero.
😂 Ikr?
Thanks for the summation because the suspense was horrendous....meow, meow 🐈♥️ 100 Oregon cats, you rock!
Yea ikr
I have a pet cat she's so sweet ^^
People who think cats are mean are trying to apply dog behaviors to a completely different animal
And that’s the sad truth. Why not go ahead and compare a dog’s behaviour to a rabbit while they’re at it? Or maybe a horse? Or a fish?
If people just learnt how to understand each animal’s own unique language, they can discover so much! I’m glad you agree.
DaydreamingDuma exactly, imagine if people said “my lizard is mean because it doesn’t show obvious signs of excitement whenever it sees me”
@Voltaic Fire But then they label cats as bad pets entirely just because they dont meet their own needs.
Or else they are generalizing a bad experience. I mean, some cats are definitely mean and spoiled, and others apply their territorial aggression to humans they don't know. In both cases a person who has not bonded with a normal cat might get the wrong idea about cats in general.
Not exactly. Cats ARE empirically "mean" that is they are neurotic and show emotional outbursts. They are more likely to scratch/attack without provocation. Doesn't mean they don't love or what have you.
as an autistic person, I relate SO MUCH to cats. People see us as aloof, antisocial, finicky, etc. But we exist on a huge spectrum of sociability, lovingness, and empathy, just like the cats.
My sister has autism as well, this makes too much sense! She loves cats!
I AGREE SO MUCH!! I’ve always noticed how similar my and my cats behaviour was!
I agree! Cats have always been my favourite animal because I feel like I understand and relate to them on so many things.
Olivia, true. I am also in the autistic spectrum and growing up with a lot of cats I used to think that I, too, was a cat. 😄
Love that
I grew up hating cats and being a dog person.
In my 20s I got my first kitten, and now I think: how come I spent all my childhood without the most amazing animal ever?! Cats are incredible affectionate, but they won’t have any issue letting you know if you suck as a person.
I just got my first kitten and I’m 34. She’s amazing! I didn’t hate cats, I just never had one. They’re a whole different ball of wax that’s for sure!
My cats are very moody. The only way to deal with them correctly is make observation of their biological times to play/take a rest/eat
Totally true. While some cats are less affectionate than others, I do believe all cats form some sort of trust with the humans who feed and care for them. It can take time though.
But regardless of how friendly a cat appears, we all know they *hate* being stroked roughly like a dog. That's why some dog people fail at winning a cat's heart.
@@catguy4996 I've fostered cats for years but never kept any until recently I adopted two male siblings who are around 8-9 weeks old now and the only issue i have is them throwing tantrums and being jealous for my attention when I try to play with them equally
Ah yes cats are psychologists :)))) complete nonsense
I think that anyone who has every actually owned a cat knows that they form attachments to people.
But not in the same way. Dogs are companions, cats are pets
@@timguerra1694 Not true. cats are vermin killers in barns and on farms.
Exactly, it's people who doesn't know cats that has this kind of assumptions.
@@timguerra1694 dogs have been bred to be completely subservient to humans. The reason people think cats are cold and unaffectionate is they expect them to worship them like dogs do. It took a year for my cat to fully trust me but now she enjoys being held and rubs her head against my hand in the morning, asking for affection.
@@timguerra1694 Cat's have been around for 1000's of years, dogs are a form of inbred wolves created by humans for hunting. A dog is nothing but a mutant, hunting assistant by design. If anything dogs are more pets than cats. But I love both so screw you.
Cats aren’t mean, they are just practical beings who aren’t comfortable with a complete stranger suddenly wanting to touch their body.
many many dogs are that way- including entire breeds. and many cats love strangers-
kookoo4pandas I’m saying what’s more common, there’s a whole stereotype that dogs are friendly and cats are arrogant and mean
@@soapy2587 a cat that's not neutered/spayed, will ravage anything in sight including its owner. dogs don't have that temper, even while in heat. hence it is not a misconception, it is A FACT. cats don't want people touching them 24/7(including their owners), dogs in general don't mind that their owners touch them all day, everyday.
Which is *so relatable* honestly.
walinton dogs kill more people than cats lol
It’s nice that they addressed that cats will have different personalities. My older cat is not a cuddly cat. Her owner was going to give her away because she wasn’t cuddly enough. I took her because you can’t just do that to an animal. It’s like trying to give away your own child because they didn’t turn out as smart or as generally happy as you would like. Each cat displays their affection in different ways as long as you take time to learn and give them their own space
Thank you so much for caring for her. I'm happy she found a caring, respectful owner that understands that cats, like people, have different personalities. Again, thank you. I'm sure your cat is happy :)
My grandma complains that my cat doesn't show her affection, doesn't come when called or let her rub her belly. She's so acustomed to dog behavior that cat behavior is so alien to her. When Im sitting at my desk, my cat will walk uo and rub herself against my leg and let me scratch her behind the ears. She's not a cuddler either but we're learning to understand each other. Now a days she lows me to kiss her forhead, even if for a couple of seconds, and im sure to be gentle and soft since she gets easily anxious. She also purrs when i pet her while she eats. So yeah, cats give affection in different ways. Doesn't mean it's not love.
my parents still favor dogs even after almost 20 years having cats. after raising my own, i realized just how much they had no clue what they were doing. they would see scratching posts as unsightly and yet, complain when they scratched their recliners. so they declawed them causing them pain for their lives and one of them to have litter box issues which resulted in that cat being euthanized for "behavior issues". he was also highly unfavored by my extroverted family members for being too "scared, shy and aloof". they would throw toys as if the cats were dogs. they would complain about the crazy running up and down the stairs (yes because if you dont engage with them the correct way they will do that) and the smell of litter and would never give them wet food bc of the smell and overfeed on dry causing obesity and diabetes. some people should just not own cats if theyre gonna have biases and be willfully uneducated.
worship the comedy god seo eunkwang or else That’s so sad I hope they aren’t still treating cats that way.
YES THIS SO MUCH.
as i think about this further, i dont want to demonize my parents but they were kind of abusive at times. not just to my cats but to me as well. the whole euthansia thing gave me a great deal of trauma because they took him right out of my arms to take him to the vet. and when i looked in their faces, there was no semblence of them there. just anger. my mom then asked why i didnt go with after she came back as i was whailing my eyes out, having a full on panic attack...why would i want to go to see my cats premature death???? i had endless nightmares that would shake me so hard and i still believe now 7 years later that this has fundamentally changed me mentally at my core. the worst of it all was my other cats painful crying at night. i can still hear it haunting me. i know theyre "just cats" and everyone goes through a death at some point but i still dont understand why it was and is so violent in my head. my other cat is actually getting very old now, and everytime my dad brings up him leaving us, idk if its just an implanted thought in my head but i just think hes purposely making me relive it all again. ahh im getting too personal. (btw theyve slowly after the incident tried to learn a little more but are still not regretful of what theyve done and still favor dogs way more. so i dont think theyre gonna adopt any more cats any time soon thank god) but honestly, theres a lot of things about animals we dont understand. but one thing we should all understand is that anger should not belong in these kinds of relationships. my parents often yelled at our pets, and i believe their anger along with their ignorance caused many of these problems. cats are not people. they deserve an owner who tries to understand them and treat them the way cats need to be treated. with patience and willingness to learn.
update: my other cat is dead. my parents put him down after 16 years because he had diabetes and was losing too much weight and hair. i am beyond depressed but it does help feeling like this time around there was a legitimate reason (old age and diabetes). its easier when i can tell myself that i dont want him to suffer anymore. he could barely walk. but of course my mom still is emotionally distant about it. not comforting me or giving me any reassurance. just "hey you wanna say goodbye?" i knew all this time she hated having them but this comment really puts it into perspective. all she thought of them was a burden she can finally let go of. it just sickens me so much. im trying to be there for my 2 year old cat though and it helps knowing i can treat him better than my parents ever treated me or my best friends. rip max and tiger

Your parents sadly won't understand anytime soon, but hopefully someday they will. My family hated cats, they said they were super mean and all that crap, I begged for 10 years to have one, about 4 months ago I got one and my family fell in love with her, she's so social and expressive about her feelings! I'm always explaining them her behaviours and they are slowly learning. I hope you live many many more years with your cat 💕 good luck! It'll be ok! I'm sure you are a great cat owner 💖
"do cats like their people" she asks as mine tries to crawl up my chest for snuggle time. hard maybe

as i'm trying to watch this my cat decides he's not getting enough attention and gets in my face for headbutts and face scritches. which requires much holding and earns much purring.
Have you got cat food on your face?
My cat was head butting my bedroom door so he can have snuggles halfway threw watching. He’s sound asleep on my lap
Right? Mine are totally in my personal space right now.
No, we don't like cats performing in musical features.
Yeah we do, we just don't like humans performing as cats in musical features
@@DaggerMan11 I mean cats performing any sort of feature would be awesome, right?
They would have been better using CGI cats rather than humans made to look like cats.
I hated you in Battlefield 1!
True!
i love how cat lovers love cats, but they're fine with dogs, whereas dog lovers actively hate cats...
Ikr!
I was the person you described... but then I realized dogs are such a problem with most dog people. its an obsession. I got so tired of my dads obsession, he loves the dog more than his own human family. Ive seen dog women on facebook adoption pages, harrass and bully women whos dogs showed aggression to their small children and were trying to get rid of the dog for the children's safety. Im single and the amount of dudes who own dogs write "I love my dog" "looking for mother figure for my dog" "dont bother if you dont like dogs"
okay... to the left then. I cannot bother. Dog moms are probably even worse.
I watch "I hate dogs" youtube channel frequently to remind myself of the troubles with dogs and dog ownership.
i love both kinds of floof
@@amberotl5276 They want a big, vicious substitute for their masculinity. They are like gun nuts, and often the same people.
I kinda am not the biggest fan of the dogs that look really mean and are always barking n stuff, but love cats
Cats will follow you around, try to get your attention, sit in your lap, cuddle with you when you sleep, play with you and can leave anytime they want to, but they chose to stay because they love you. They love people who show them respect and love. They aren't mean but they do hiss when they are frightened especially when confronted by a hostile stranger. The cats that don't like most people have usually been hurt by a mean human.
Of course she’s going to only experience aloof cats if she’s never had one of her own. A random cat isn’t going to treat you the same way as it’s owner
Watch the whole video dumbass, the study is still ongoing.
@@TheArtkaw What? I literally have no clue what motivated that reaction.
Seriously, it's not rocket science that a stranger will be treated differently by _anything_ than their friend would be. Even dogs treat strangers differently than their trusted friends, contrary to the stereotype.
Yeah, my cat literally runs away when we have people at our house. Then when it's just us, she's very calm and cuddly
@benjovi55 This. It also sort of explains why a lot of people who avoid cats find that cats come to them - Low eye contact, not pushing into their space, not overly energetic about them.
Every single person that mishandled a cat/didn't respect their personal space: "wHy ArE tHeY sO mEaN"
Dead man's answers
People need to realize that you can’t treat cats like you treat dogs. They’re more cautious. They have personal space. Cues that you need to understand in order to understand how a cat is feeling. You can’t try to pet a cat who is lashing their tail because “dogs wag their tails when they’re happy” and then get angry when they bite or claw you.
some cats are actually just mean. not my cat though.
It's true. If I ask my kitty for kisses, he will sometimes give me a few. But if I ask him for one too many he will punch me in the face.
@Oana it's not a competition between dogs and cats. the point is there are enough mean cats such that it would be reasonable for a person with limited experience with cats to think that cats are just mean if that person has only ever encountered mean cats.
A lot of people just don't know how to read cats body language and mood.
How to get a cat to like you?? Don’t treat a cat like a dog, treat it like a cat. Easy, simple
actually some cat breeds like Maine coons and Abyssinian cats have personality like dogs. You can train them to walk on the leashes too.

Treat pets the same. They have to do what benefits you and if they can’t adapt, euthanasia
My cat just won’t leave me alone. Runs up to me, rubs against my face and even climbs on my back for rides! Other people say she’s horrible but she’s just trying to protect me and the other cats, they’re her family and she wants to keep them safe.
Truly a queen
When a cat shows you affection, you know that you *earned* that.
sdstewart100 you know that the cat wants something*
It's actually not hard to _earn_ a cat's affection. Whether it's your cat, a friend's cat, a stray cat, or just some random cat you've never seen before, if a cat likes you, it's going to be affectionate towards you. It's not hard to earn that affection if you respect it. Cats can sense when someone is kind and gentle, just like how humans can sense when someone is kindhearted and a good person.
With my cat if she shows you affection you just know she's awake, she's so needy lmao.
It was a joke guys....
Yes! 👏👏
It annoys me that people find the idea that cats like their owners so shocking
Obviously cats love their owners. That's plain as day to anyone who has ever had a cat. They're not demons, they're not mean, they're animals.
This is not meme culture its been this way for centuries. Anyone who's ever owned and loved their cat knows that the feelings are mutual. The woman presenting this video comes off as very ignorant, an exact representation of centuries worth of misunderstanding and contempt.
*cute animals*
Cats are just hungry
Exactly
Alex Rodriguez Welp, there was a study proving that cats choose their owners over food, but whatever.
Shouldn’t have had someone who obviously doesn’t know/like cats to conduct this interview
People crack me up how they get offended when an animal asserts boundaries, like they don't have their own personal boundaries. Needy judgmental jerks 😑
So basically, this study shows, how cats, like humans, have different social preferences and acts accordingly to attachments like how humans would. It's like as if cats know that they have boundaries to be respected, imagine that. *Stares at camera*
Hmmm, it's almost like common sense could have told anyone this outcome ages ago...

In other news, extensive expensive university research has shown that water is indeed wet.
I read once that the reasons people give for not liking cats all come down to "because they act like people."
exactly
I swear there’s that stigma on cats that every cat hates everything and are super aggressive. Every cat owner knows that their cat loves them.
Much like K pop fans a few bad apples, or if we're being realistic the sizable minority of bad apples, ruin the perception for the majority who are perfectly nice and enjoyable to spend time with.

I’ve only had my cat a month and every morning, he usually runs around the house but when I wake up and call his name, wherever he is in the house, he comes running to me, meowing loudly for me to open my bedroom door. Then he hops on the bed and lies down, or licks his paws, or plays with my feet or licks my hands. He’s so lovable too and so playful! It’s always about respecting your pet as a living breathing animal, and not a toy that’s just there for your entertainment!
Yes to cat as family member. Our cat has breakfast and dinner together with us. His meal is carefully prepared, and we make sure everything he eat is healthy for him.
My cat gets nervous with loud noises. She always goes straight to me when she gets scared, even waking me up in the middle of the night when she gets scared or stressed.
I understand this is just anecdotal and not scientifically relevant. But she's a former stray who seems convinced everything wants to eat her, so her trust feels uniquely earned.
when my cousins come over and when there are loud noises my kitty hides under my bed
I find it mind blowing people still think cats don't like people.
The main theory is that they domesticated themselves because they realized if they killed the pests that tend to live around humans, and spread disease to humans, like rats and mice, those humans would be very grateful to them!
Cats love people the way people love cars.
I think they are as fascinated with us as we are with them, I know mine stares in curiousity when I do things. We entertain them for the same reasons they entertain us. We are both confusing, weird, funny, inexplicable, silly and even adorable.
@asdf I like people that feed me too.
@@JimFortune That makes zero sense
This is a very "Dog owner" way to think about cats. I've had friends come over and pet my cat like they would pet a dog and my friends wonder why my cat doesn't enjoy their presence. A lot of dog owners don't know how to treat or approach cats in order to gain their affection.
True. Dog lover here, but I personally don't hate cats I'm just indifferent towards them because I've never had one. When I am around one I'm confused though because I have no idea what to do with it. I do know not to treat it like a dog though. My brain just goes "okay there is a pretty cute cat there...seeing as how there is no appropriate action to execute we are done here". Probably why cats are kind of boring to me as far as real life interaction that I've had
@@elizabethosborne9059 some tips for interacting with strange cats! first is let them come to you. when they do, you can slowly hold a finger out toward them, stopping a few inches shy of their nose, and let them get closer to sniff you. they will either sniff then pull back, in which case you should leave them alone and wait for them to approach you again for another try, or they'll push their nose against your finger, in which case you can use that finger to rub their cheeks or chin - just make sure you let the cat guide where it wants you to touch it, and don't try to keep going if it pulls back. if the cat gets into it then you can try going for a full-hand pet, scratching their ears or stroking their head. Stick to the head until they're comfortable around you, most cats actually don't like full-body petting (it riles them up).
in general with cats you just need to take it slow and let them lead the interaction. and also be patient, some cats can be skittish and will come sniff, run off, and come back to investigate and sniff again multiple times before they finally let you touch them for more than half a second. i have a cat who is like this, with her you just have to accept that you're probably gonna get 1 good pet per interaction and nothing more, lol.
but you can also just...play with them. ask their owner if they've got a wand toy and try getting the cat interested in playing. this is a good way to get a cat to warm up to you, in addition to giving you a way to interact with them. i was able to form a very strong bond with a notoriously unfriendly cat just by being the only person who played with him on a daily basis, so it works.
Unless the human is willing to learn.
They prefer to avoid cats.
I’ve noticed that even in Cesar Milan.
He and Jackson Galaxy did a video conference interview.
Cesar made a comment showing his ignorance towards cats.
Jackson is good with dogs, but he prefers cats. As he has, as of the last time I heard, one dog and a lot of cats.
@@elizabethosborne9059 Frankly (and @Guindo, The gave good comments here already), the fact that you don't go to pet them immediately means you're halfway there. Patience and knowing what *not* to do are basically the key to winning a cat's affection. Pet lightly, always go head-to-tail in terms of direction (with the grain of their fur), and I'd avoid really using your palm at all. The bottom of their back (right in front of their tail), their hips, and their head area (neck, chin, behind the ears, top of the head) are the sweet spots generally. Belly pets - really depends on the cat, but they generally need to trust you first. Kind of a cheat code, at least with both of my cats, is where their ears join the top of their head. Really hard area for them to reach as accurately/easily as we can, they'll melt lol
@@elizabethosborne9059 It's actually very easy to make friends with a socialized (AKA pet) cat. Offer your hand like you're another cat offering to sniff noses, and wait for them to pet _you._ If they want to be petted, they'll show you where by rubbing it against you. After that, you're basically good. But unless you know the cat well, I'd recommend not doing full body pets, since it can be pretty overstimulating for some.
This comment section makes me so happy that people feel the same way I do: cats deserve just as much love as dogs get (also I heard their brains are more like human brains than dog brains)

I am (a little) disappointed in this response. I think majority of why ppl think cats are mean is because they are expecting cats to be dogs, period.
I love all kinds of animals, so I am not saying cats are better than dogs. Neither will I say dogs are better than cats. People don't expect horses or pigs to behave like dogs.. but cats are expected to have many dog-like behaviors. And very much like in the movie series -- How To Train Your Dragon ..it is important to earn the cat's trust, before you can earn the cat's love. Dogs (being the angels they are) are a lot more generous with this trust and love. But once you earn a cat's trust.. and eventually their love -- it is frikking precious, and worth all the time and effort!
So -- don't be lazy, learn cats ...learn about THIS particular cat. And don't expect cats to be dogs, or even other cats.
Anyone who's ever oned a cat knows they give a huge amount of love.
Yup. You just have to treat them right and meet their needs and they are so loving and thankful, simply the best thing to have in your life 💜💜💜
I've oned, twoed & threed them.
It's not the same way we love them imo. They form an attachment to us that is partly need but also partly just affection. When my cat comes for quiet time every night and wants me to load up a cat video for us to watch, he is expressing his affection for me. He can go anywhere else in the house he wants but he always chooses that.
I know, as all of the cats I've lived with insist on being in the same room with me, if not physically in contact with me, such as getting under the covers when I sleep...
EXACTLY Thank you
When people say they only experience negative interactions with cats, I always think: sounds like an issue with you, not the cats.
Exactly, I immediately ask what did they do to that cat
It's always the humans, never the cat. I very much agree.
Agreed
Lol, yeah
Captain Horatio Bungle III right like I always blame the people 😂
I grew up with a dog but as a cat owner for 10 years, I can definitely attest to them having SERIOUS personalities, temperaments, attachment bonds, and hilarious facial expressions that show so many moods. Their ears are also really mobile and tell you a lot about what's going on for them -- something I didn't know til having my cats.
What's odd about this interview to me is, that vets and vet practices are very aware that cats are more stressed when their owners aren't around-- especially after the pandemic when many couldn't accompany pets inside. Once I finally was able to come in with my cat, they said it's been night and day in terms of getting the cats to stay calm when treating them, when the owners are allowed to come in, versus when they're not.
I took my cat to the vet and couldn’t go into the room with him. I had to go to the bathroom though. I heard him crying for me. It almost made me cry.
Why is this even a thing? Do people really actually believe cats don’t love their owners?
My dad before: "Cats aren't loyal. They only stick around for food."
My dad now, after I got two cats: *making cat toys and furnitures, and play with them through the window*
Yes.
I know someone who inherited a cat because a parent passed on.. they think it is funny to talk about how the cat hates them. They are not affectionate with the cat (self proclaimed dog person), let their preschooler terrorize the cat, no proper places for the cat to hide/get away for alone time, no proper stimulation/play time with the cat..
It breaks my heart, when I visit them and see the poor little girl. She's still so full of love (with ppl who take the time to treat her well) though!!
I think because people base it off dog behavior. Cats are usually more subtle in their expression, especially when compared to dogs who jump all over you. However, cat owners understand their behavior. My parents have a cat who is just totally obsessed with my dad. She loves him so much, and when he leaves to go to the store or do stuff outside she wanders the house meowing and looking for him. Even today he got in the shower and she went and found my mom and started yelling at her like "What did you do with him? Where is he?" I think cats are just more secure in their attachments to humans and know they don't have to go overboard showing it.
Yes. My parents in law hate cats and they say that cats are mean, selfish and are not (clingy) like dogs. I've heard multiple dog people that think that cats just use their owners to get food. They obviously don't know how sweet and attached cats can be to their humans 😍
A am neither biologist nor cat owner. And cat's mind for me is an alien mind. i don't know whats inside, what cats may think of owners. Do they capable of perceivivng concept of love (or affection)? How different do they love? (In the end how to define love?) I guess this is why this is a thing lol
"Cats love their owners as much as dogs."
People who've ever owned a cat: "Um yeah, duh"
A lot of dog people apparently: *triggered*
2 months late on that comment, but cats hardly "love" anything or anyone. There have been multiple studies to prove it, so I can understand dog people as you called them to be upset over someone bringing dogs to the same level of those uncaring felines. Not saying cats are evil or bad or anything of this sort, just stating that what you, and many other people say about your pets is untrue. What i mean to say is your cat doesn't care about you, and most likely never will, as it is for the most part a solitary creature that generally doesn't form a secure attachment to their owners. Most studies show that dogs produce 5 times the love hormone of cats when bonding with someone so whatever was said about them being equal is a load of crap. Have you ever considered why there is a such a thing as a "service dog" even if it is a very small breed, but service cats somehow don't make the mark? That's because training cats to keep humans safe is near impossible. Before you go full furry fiesta on me I'd like you to know that I own both cats and dogs, don't mistreat them and love them equally, but I can still tell the obvious difference in their attachment.
@@ludek7548 ok dog person
@@NattiKay I just said I own both cats and dogs, stop using dog person as an insult, it really puts "cat people" in a bad light. Why you have to be so passive aggresive in the first place? Have a good day. Also, ok boomer.

Cats are way more like humans than dogs are. Generally I can’t run up to a stranger and start hugging and loving them instantly without really creeping them out. For some reason those same boundaries with trust and familiarity we have are hated in cats.

We have 3 cats. Our neighbors have cats but they all left them when they moved somewhere. You can hear their cry through the empty halls looking for their family. It's difficult to listen to. We rescued them and gave them to our cousins because our cats and their are enemies 😂.
My cat only likes being pet on his terms and doesn’t like being cuddly, but I know he likes me cause he likes to sleep near me all the time.
It’s kinda like having a friend lol
I have a brother and sister. The sister is the active one loves to play and occasionally sits on you. The brother will cuddle any time any place.
This is true for so many different animals. You have to get to know them on their terms and not just mob them 24/7.
Scott Whatever you are saying this on a study that proves that cats are affectionate towards their owners.
My cat likes to follow me around the house (not for food, she has that readily available all the time) and hops on my lap. I’m pretty sure it’s not just seeking warmth because there might be someone sitting on the couch right next to her, but she’ll follow me if I’m walking around.

This depends on the cat. Cats are individuals, just like dogs are. Not all dogs are trusting right off the bat either.
when a random cat is affectionate to u, u jus feel like "the chosen one" :)
My oldest cat is the most independent and aloof and when she gives me licks I literally feel blessed by the gods. It’s so awesome.
Happens to me often on the streets. I guess these cats are completely used to humans and trust people in general, which is why they're easily affectionate.

Omg I thought that was some weird manifestation of my social anxiety but yes when a new cat shows affection you feel super special.
What’s especially interesting/heartwarming about this to me, is that Ainsworth’s famous study about attachment styles in children went almost exactly the same way. The stress, the reassurance, even the standoffishness that the cats in this study replicate the exact same attachment styles. Cats really do connect to humans in a profound way that I wish I could understand more.

I like how we need to make nearly 10 minute long videos to explain to some people that cats actually do love their owners.
Why do dog people act like their opinions are generally held truths?
Cats are misunderstood
I think that's just people.
@@daybidbanderbecht5299 true. It applies to everything, not just pets

dog people are less intelligent generally :(
I tend to find that people who think cats are aloof and unfeeling animals tend to be people who erroneously assume that every domesticated animal responds to human interaction like a dog does. Of course a cat isn't going to like you if you immediately get in its face and start trying to pet it like its a dog. lol
Thats exactly how my cat behaves. If we have guests and they start to try to pet her and talk to her in "baby voice", she just ignores them. But if new people ignore her first and just be in the room for awhile, she will eventually rub herself on their legs and let them pet her. Interesting is that she behaves like that even if they offer her treats.
Also she doesnt like loud people. She kinda behaves like me when i meet new people :/
YEAH! People compare them as if they are the same animal and as if they have had more domestication experience.
It's stupid cause there are a lot of dogs who don't like that either..
Hey, my cat like pretending she's aloof and doesn't need people. Then I go take a shower and see the little floofball watching me through the shower curtain.

My kitten loved me!!! She always hung out with me. I cannot believe that people think cats are not capable of love!!! They are very picky, yet very social with those who they are attached to.
Hello beautiful how are you doing
There is no question about it - Considering just how well humans and cats mesh together, its more than a simple practical reliationship of food providers.
Also, in my family, I could easily see whom the cats preferred, even though we all gave them food, they all formed their own emotional opinion of a favourite person.
“But why are cats so mean sometimes, though?” Idk, girl, why do I think this university student is the first cat owner you’ve ever spoken to in your entire life?
I have a very hard time believing she's never met a "mean" dog or human, so that question is just baffling. Do those not count just because they're not cats? Man, negative bias is a powerful drug...
Yeah, dogs are more likely to attack someone....aren't they? She draws such a bizarre comparison.
@@mentak2593 I'm a cat person who's never really owned a dog but I have to disagree that a dog is more likely to attach someone. People think cats are mean because when you annoy them, they're quick to claw at you. I've been clawed by every cat I've ever owned. I love them, but it happens. I've only been bitten by one dog though and that was after I annoyed it quite a bit.
MagnificentErik cats are just more aware of their boundaries and that they need to be respected, I think a lot of dog people don't like cats because they try and treat them like dogs even though they don't have the same social language, and also maybe don't understand that cats do show love but not in the same ways as dogs do, which if u don't understand them then you'll misinterpret their behaviour
The answer to "why are some cats mean?" is fear. Cats are aggressive when they feel threatened in some way. "Meanness" is unique to humans.
Annie Sap
Pretty sure my two goad one another like siblings...
I've noticed that a lot of "mean" dogs are actually afraid when they are being aggressive.
I agree with everything except the last statement. Mean behaviour is not at all unique to humans and cats are one of the worst animals for it (i.e. cats catching animals and 'playing' with them (torturing) before they kill them)
I love cats and am a proud owner of one, but when she gets ahold of a bird or a mouse trust me she is pretty mean.
@@dasjugsboi Cats don't "torture" their prey--they are weakening the animal before they kill it. If you have any sympathy for mice then I don't know what to say, considering that mice are filthy, disease-ridden pests that are actually dangerous to your health.
Moreover, _all_ carnivores tend to rend their prey quite cruelly before killing it. Humans are the only species that try to kill with anything approaching mercy.
@@Schwarzvogel1 Catching the prey without mortally wounding it, then letting it run a bit only to catch it again is not "weakening" it. They are playing with their prey, simple as that. Many cats and some other animals do horrible things for their own personal pleasure.

Of course they do. Anyone who has ever owned a cat knows that. I've found that most people that have never owned a cat thinks they're jerks, but they just don't give their affections as easily as dogs. Cats can be very affectionate and loving.

I don't like dogs because they're super friendly to absolutely anyone. They have no boundaries, they jump on you, lick you all over and bark loudly at anything. Cats are much more like people.

Cats are more fragile than dogs. Of course they have to be more careful with who they trust.

the only people who question cats’ ability and choice to attach themselves to their owners are people who never had a cat.
“why are some cats so mean?”.....have you walked by someone’s house with their dogs barking his head off at you?!!! different individuals have different personalities and temperaments just like humans.
Exactly!!! And at least cats aren't so annoying about their feelings like dogs can be. I mean, dogs are fine don't get me wrong, they're good people. But a cat won't knock all the mugs off your coffee table with it's tail just because it's happy! In fact, it'll walk on that thing like a yoga-master acrobat walking over lava just so it *doesn't* knock anything over...
(Unless, you're trying to focus on something else, then it'll knock a pen off the table just for lols, but that's different).
I agree, those people have just never hung out with a cat for long enough.

Agreed. It's really not about the animals so much as what our cultures have taught us about what these animals symbolize.
Cats: "It's just _adorable_ that you think _you're_ the owners in this relationship ❤️"

I had a dog before and now I have cats and I know for sure that they all had some attachment to me and my family. When our cats are anxious they often come seek comfort for me, they probably learned that I'm the safest place for them because I'm fiercely protective of their boundaries while still staying calm. Spinnetti yeah and I think a lot of people that haven’t had a cat think that things that both cats and dogs do mean the same things. Like a dog wagging a tail like crazy is super exited but if a cat does the same that means that it is really annoyed and should be left alone. I think people don’t realise that dog and cat body language means different things and this can lead to having bad experiences.

This is so true, you have to EARN their trust. It took me almost 5 months to bond with one of my cats. He was just really shy and scared of humans and it took him a while longer to get comfortable around me. But now he absolutely loves having me around, getting belly rubs and staying on my lap. You have no idea how satisfying it is to earn that trust!
This is so true. Sure, it is not hard to earn a cats trust but cats are much more honest than humans. That said, you can misread a cat and they can't always tell you gently when they had enough. Dog are much simpler creatures, they are herd animals hardwired for a strict social order and humans know how to exploit that. Cats are more independent the same way healthy humans are. Independent as in still appreciating the company of others, at least some of the time. And since cats sleep or snooze most of the day, that means they can be _vary_pushy when they wake up and need interaction.
The thing with humans and dogs is that we've been with them so long that we understand eachother. Cats are basically impossible to decipher.
