It's crazy to see the downward spiral for layton after azran legacy. I remember being so excited for Lady Layton and then when it released it was so disappointing. Any mysteries it set up were never answered and then later on answered in such a lackluster way in the anime. Despite that I always held out for a proper sequel but after 5 years and this video, I don't think we will be seeing that happen
It really makes me sad seeing how Professor Layton has fallen. They’ll be forever be the best series for the soundtrack, characters, and memorable moments
Watching this video makes me want to try another one. I had Diabolical Box and it made a great first impression. I can't say much more than that because shortly after I bought it, my DS and that game were stolen. When I got a new DS, I bought Unwound Future. I'm not sure what happened, but after loving the time I had with Diabolical Box, I just wasn't enjoying Unwound Future as much as I thought I was going to. I still liked it, kind of, but it took me a long time to finish and once I didn't I figured I was done with the series. I do remember the music being amazing. Now I kind of want to give one of the 3DS games a try.
I got into the Professor Layton series over the pandemic, and immediately fell in love with the world, characters, story, and puzzles. Then a few months later they announced the closure of the North American branch. I truly wish I was able to experience this series in its hay day, I wish I was able to be excited for a new entry.
Good things are meant to take time. Level5 as a company should have balanced it between releasing games, and waiting. You cannot force things. Just take a look at EAs game Mass Effect Andromeda's launch. Massive failure. Maybe the series will come again later. We will just have to wait!
I played all of the 6 layton games and they were all incredible. The universe they created was so comfy, I love(d) it. I personally didn't think they were repetitive since the stories were so different each time. Overcomed with nostalgia, I bought the nintendo switch version, and saying that it was a disappointment wouldn't be enough. It's just a bunch of short cases, with nothing at stake, so boring. I must have played it for 10 hours and never finished it. I really hope one day they will make a new game like the old ones, I would definitelly buy it. I miss this handsome gentleman
Happy to see that so many people still care about this franchise☺️ It's all very bitter sweet to me, because obviously it doesn't really look like we're gonna get a new Layton game but also because my brother, who passed away in 2013, once gifted our dad "The last Specter" for Christmas and that's basically how my journey with Professor Layton started. After our dad, I started to play the game although I was still an elementary schooler at the time and therefore often clueless when trying to solve the puzzles. I remember my brother helping me out when I was stuck and the joy I felt when I (although it was actually him) finally solved the puzzle. So without my brother I maybe wouldn't have ever discovered this series which has become my favorite game franchise over the years and holds a very special place in my heart. Yes, bitter sweet really describes my relationship with these games...
A (I would underline if I could) PROFESSOR Layton game is VERY different than just a 'Layton' game. Better be specific with how we ask for a new one. Not that he's the only good character or that new characters are bad but I've yet to see a 'Layton' game come anywhere near as good as any of the PROFESSOR Layton games. Like they did Hershel dirty. Knowing him, you'd think that if he did have to give up his child that he'd leave the child a puzzle and leave the puzzle with the orphanage until the child would be of age and have the ability to take care of themselves in a fight if need be. But no...no explanation, no puzzle, no reunion, no nothin' except for, 'your dad just basically abandoned you, sorry'
I also got introduced to it by my older brother. I was quite young at the time so it was him who knew what game to ask for Christmas. We only ever owned the third one, called The Lost Future in Italian, but we played some others as well. I love how everyone here has their own connection and memories with these games, shared with other people in their lives. That's beautiful, and it's things like these that are really worth remembering and cherishing.
I still remember the ending of Diabolical Box, its plot twist and everything else. I can safely say it was a strong and fluential experience for my little self
Found this after watching your Layton reaction and I'm so thrilled that things are starting fresh with New World of Steam! Katrielle's game is the one that I haven't finished yet and while I've been enjoying it casually on my own since the announcement of a new Layton last week, I have faith that the next entry will help revitalize the franchise! Great video!
Great video! Very underplayed masterpiece games. Also, I feel like Professor Layton is uniquely quite popular in Europe but less so in the USA. Pretty interesting difference I can't really compare to anything else.
that's so true, i remember being surprised people only heard of layton via the ace attorney crossover when i think for europeans it's the other way around
Think that might be true for most of level 5's endeavors inazuma eleven was huge there whereas we in the America's only got a port of the first game and it was such a big deal when it came to yo-kai watch that the US had to wait several months for yo-kai watch 3 after it was already released in Europe including the U.K so there was already an English localization
Nintendo of Europe did pretty good marketing for Layton back then. I still remember all the tv spots and flyer marketing they did in game stores since the first game came out in 2008 here.
Hey everyone, just so you know rn there's a team of around 50 people working on a Lost future sequel. This is of course a fan project but we have some really talented people working on it Maybe we won't have any other official Layton game, but as long as we remember him, Layton will never truly be gone
i really really REALLY hope layton does a big comeback. the games are amazing and the stories are even better. even if it takes them a while to do it, i pray we have another chance.
This video was an amazing analysis and commentary and gave me some good laughs. Professor Layton is a series that means beyond the world to me, literally grew up with it as they came out. Unwound Future was the very first game I’d bought on my own as a kid, and going through this trip down memory lane was something special. Thank you so much for this. Also Don Paolo is easily The Sexiest villain of all time how could you
This series... is so chill. So comforting. I'm in love with its Aesthetic alone. Even though i'm too much of an idiot to be able to enjoy puzzle games.
I love this series (with the exception of the Katrielle's side that we all want to decanonize and the strange mobile things they made), Unwound Future is probably one of the best games I have ever played, and Miracle Mask is a close second; actually, no game from the two trilogies is bad. The Eternal Diva is also an amazing movie and one of the best videogame-based movies ever made, and I'm glad it is considered canon (as confirmed by Miracle Mask). I agree with you, Level5 has great IPs and people, but its corporate side led to this and now they are stuck in this grey area. I hope they can manage to solve all this stuff, and possibly create a good sequel trilogy from where Unwound Future left off, but I find it unlikely at the moment. Personally I also would love to have Nintendo buy them (and have Layton in Smash as well), but that also seems unlikely.
Layton Brothers Mystery Room is honestly a fun time all things considered, so long as I don't think of it as a Layton game. I wouldn't be mad if they made a Mystery Room 2, and I can't wait for the fan translations for the manga to come out! (If I don't learn Japanese first lol)
Funny enouge i really liked Brothers Layton. Alfonso Layton feeled like someone new and more adult. Kat was ok....but i also canon Alfonso so it gets a pass...not to forget the anime series was better.
Professor Layton is a masterpiece of a series, and one which brought me a ton of joy over the years. The series may be dead, but the soul will live on, and maybe, just maybe we will get a happy end to this story... Until then keep up the good work, and have a nice day.
The only games I really loved were UF and MM Curious village is just boring imo it has some good but not enough Diabolical box is pretty decent but it's slow a lot of the time Last specter left no impression on me Azran Legacy is really messy I had fun with them but UF and MM are the ones I think are masterpieces
@@banzaialex5984 Fair enough those are some decent points. I personally love each of the games for their own particular reasons, with my favourites being DB and MM for their narratives and particularly good puzzles. Either way neat to hear your personal takes, hope you have a nice day.
@@cannonballking7 yeah I can understand loving each of the games although the ones I do think are masterpieces have really high praise from me UF and MM are easily in my top 10 video games
Professor Layton was (and still is) my favorite game series of all time. I bought every game I could at release and, in the case of Unwound Future, scoured the used game shelves for a copy even after I played Miracle Mask. Katrielle came out my 2nd year of college. It was heart wrenching trying to play the game and just not getting into it. I tried so hard with no success. To this day, if I need time to sit down and focus on something, I put on the professor Layton soundtrack.
i have a switch, but if i saw a Layton reveal at a Direct, i'm pre-ordering that and my father is going to do the exact same thing because he loved those games as did i
My brother used to be in and out of the hospital and really sick and I would visit him often. I was really young and didn’t know how to cheer him up, so I whipped out my 3DS and we sat there and solved puzzles together. I’m so glad that a new game is coming out and I can solve puzzles with my healthy brother at home in _his_ bed :)
YES this series is top tier. So so sad what happened. The fandom is small but it thrives. I'm working on fan fictions, art, and I hope we can see a return of the good professor soon.
This whole game franchise practically raised me and made me a lover of puzzles and riddles. It’s hurts that it’s unlikely to come back but it’s good knowing that the fans are so loyal and lovely. I’m not a huge fan of the Katrielle games, they’re just missing the emotional weight of it all and I hope that they’ll make an anime adaptation or more movies of the games so hopefully more people will meet this world and all of the people living in it
It makes me very sad, the professor Layton series was truly amazing and some of my favorite games. I also wish they hadn't made the Katrielle game because it ended in such a bad note.
The Professor Layton games I would consider underrated. They are some of the best ever made yet not too many people are aware of their existence. I remember starting with Diabolical Box as a Kid and the whole story blew me away. Almost like it would work in an anime tv show. The suspense but mostly the puzzles. How unique and intricate each one was. I was blowing away my hint coins like crazy ahaha. Sad to see that level 5 got shut down. They made games that have more quality then most triple A titles you would see today. "A Gentlemen never leaves a puzzle unsolved". So I intend to return to the games on my 3ds and solve all of the puzzles. Another reason I still keep my new 3ds xl around. Cause the switch lacks these titles. The Lady Layton was alright but left me wanting more like a trilogy pack for the switch or something. Sadly the odds of that feel slim but one can hope I suppose. My favourite of the games was the crossover with Phoenix Wright series.
9:16 I haven't heard this solution a lot before, but honestly... I don't think nintendo will do this, especially since Level-5 has released the first 3 layton games + mystery journey on mobile, but if they do, I would be incredibly happy...
I adore the Layton series, I remember getting Unwound Future one Christmas and balling my eyes out, that will always stay with me, I didn't bother with the 7th game cause it felt like it kind of stood on the story that they set out in previous games, Layton was the spotlight and while this is his daughter it just left a bit of a bitter taste, those first six games though were masterpieces!
Professor Layton will always have a special place in my heart for being so wholesome and entertaining in a time that was maybe the hardest in my life. Sad to see what happened, but maybe there will be another great title in the future.
My first Professor Layton game was the 3rd one, my older brother asked for it for Christmas. I loved it so much and I cried at the end, which I played and replayed over and over and I cried each time. I had even learnt the lines of the characters by heart and I would reenact them out dramatically. My brother's teacher at the time also loved the series and lent us the 2nd one. I didn't get to play it much, as it was mainly my brother who was playing it, but I remember us both trying to solve the last puzzle and watching the cut scenes and I cried at those too. My cousin who had played on our copy of the 3rd game and loved it, then bought herself the 4th and she let me play it. Then in highschool a friend of mine lent me the 1st game and so I completed the DS ones. Unfortunately the 3DS is region locked so I couldn't play the new games in my language on my Japanese 3DS. That's a shame, maybe one day with my own money I could finally have and replay them all, maybe even on mobile if they port them all. I even watched some of the episodes of Lady Layton's anime and though it seemed a bit more childish I actually really liked it and even cried every episode lol. I would love to play Lady Layton as well one day. I really hope they keep the franchise alive and maybe bring it back to life one day! But in the meantime they could really keep it alive through different mediums like they did with the anime. More animated movies or shows, live action, mangas, theme parks...It's such a rich IP that it would be a shame to let it die before it's necessary.
i used to ask for a layton game every year for christmas and often play them with my dad who loves puzzles. now im in college listening to the soundtrack while studying trying to recreate that serotonin release :(
Man I love this series, it's so nice to see people still talking about it ❤ I grew up with Layton and now aged 23 I'm still listening to soundtrack, playing the games, and finding videos like yours. Great content 🥰
Professor Layton is my favourite game series. I have never played a series of games that feel like they were made with THIS amount of love, the developers' care really shined through every single game. These games shaped who I am as a person, which is why it's so sad to see the series in this state, because of the massive amount of potential it has. There is no game quite like Layton, so if the series really were to end on a sour note like this it would be such an unfitting end to such incredible games. I really hope it makes a big comeback someday... if Advance Wars did it then everything is possible lol. Thank you for making this video and bringing people's attention to this criminally underrated bunch of games, it means a lot!
I'm so glad there are still people talking about Professor Layton. Professor Layton was one of the very first video games I ever played. Good things are meant to take time. Level5 as a company should have balanced it between releasing games, and waiting. You cannot force things. Just take a look at EAs game Mass Effect Andromeda's launch. Massive failure. Maybe the series will come again later. We will just have to wait!
Hope you're excited now
@@KoalaTulip47 I don’t think that I have ever been that happy after a Nintendo Direct before.
This video aged like milk and I am so excited about that
I played all of the 6 layton games and they were all incredible.
Yeah, it’s a mobile game (cellphone, not console) and it shows
Are you buying it?
Hi just wanted to let you know a new game has been announced!!
@@iniya8858 that really just made my day, thanks for the info😍
Dude wake up! We have a new game! It's not a dream anymore!
@@LittleDreamer1412 Same! I remember the UK versions had special box art and a few exclusive puzzles in some of the entries too.
Hey everyone, just so you know rn there's a team of around 50 people working on a Lost future sequel. This is of course a fan project but we have some really talented people working on it
Maybe we won't have any other official Layton game, but as long as we remember him, Layton will never truly be gone
What would it be on?
@@kileyjohnthemedic402 We're making it for Pc
do you have a discord or Reddit where we can follow the development of the game ?
This sounds very interesting, wishing you guys the best! Where will we find out when it's completed?
i really really REALLY hope layton does a big comeback. the games are amazing and the stories are even better. even if it takes them a while to do it, i pray we have another chance.
It's your lucky day.
Well the comeback has arrived
You must be happy right now
I like that this video is outdated now ,our boy is back !
HE'S BACK!!!
WE DID IT JOE
It honestly is sad what's become of the series. It was one of the best series in recent years, but then it just... Stopped
There is light at the end of the tunnel! Professor layton world of steam is on its way!
Also Don Paolo is easily The Sexiest villain of all time how could you
that man quite literally scared 5 year old me
@@liamboone2885 SAME, but he do be sexy do
@@TheBrainReal You're simping for don Paolo meanwhile Descole is right there wow
Hahahaha
This series... is so chill. So comforting. I'm in love with its Aesthetic alone. Even though i'm too much of an idiot to be able to enjoy puzzle games.
Most Poorly aged video of all time, but I don't think the maker could be any happier about it
Just watched the new Nintendo Direct. Our favourite top hat detective is back!
Who's here after the new one got announced?
Who’s here now that another title was just released from the direct??
I love how the entire fandom is so willing to write off Katrielle 😂 (myself included)
Layton Brothers Mystery Room is honestly a fun time all things considered, so long as I don't think of it as a Layton game. I wouldn't be mad if they made a Mystery Room 2, and I can't wait for the fan translations for the manga to come out! (If I don't learn Japanese first lol)
Excuse you Layton brothers was a cool game
Funny enouge i really liked Brothers Layton. Alfonso Layton feeled like someone new and more adult. Kat was ok....but i also canon Alfonso so it gets a pass...not to forget the anime series was better.
@@syd4real961 omg there's a manga?
I love how everyone is coming to this video after the direct lol
Professor Layton is a masterpiece of a series, and one which brought me a ton of joy over the years. The series may be dead, but the soul will live on, and maybe, just maybe we will get a happy end to this story... Until then keep up the good work, and have a nice day.
The only games I really loved were UF and MM
Curious village is just boring imo it has some good but not enough
Diabolical box is pretty decent but it's slow a lot of the time
Last specter left no impression on me
Azran Legacy is really messy
I had fun with them but UF and MM are the ones I think are masterpieces
@@banzaialex5984 Fair enough those are some decent points. I personally love each of the games for their own particular reasons, with my favourites being DB and MM for their narratives and particularly good puzzles. Either way neat to hear your personal takes, hope you have a nice day.
@@cannonballking7 yeah I can understand loving each of the games
although the ones I do think are masterpieces have really high praise from me UF and MM are easily in my top 10 video games
guess what
@@LEGO_496 Oh I know... What a time to be.
To this day, if I need time to sit down and focus on something, I put on the professor Layton soundtrack.
listEN. IF YOU KEEP MAKING LAYTON VIDEOS I WILL IN FACT WATCH THEM. I WAS SO DEVASTATED BY THE LEVEL-5 NEWS. I NEED LAYTON CONTENT IN MY LIFE
Professor Layton was my grandpa's favorite game series, he was Born in the 30's for perspective, he loved the story and puzzles
Nothing would make me break down and buy a Switch (and break down in tears) faster than a Professor Layton reveal on a Direct.
i have a switch, but if i saw a Layton reveal at a Direct, i'm pre-ordering that
and my father is going to do the exact same thing because he loved those games as did i
@@gobigblue357MATE WE DID IT
@@aviserig LETS GOOOOO
I’m not a huge fan of the Katrielle games, they’re just missing the emotional weight of it all and I hope that they’ll make an anime adaptation or more movies of the games so hopefully more people will meet this world and all of the people living in it
I was 12 when I was introduced to Professor Layton, 12 years later I've completed it's final installment and man does it hurt that this is the end.
What I like the most with the Layton series is the very unique artstyle, in the music and even more in the visual.
Guys, he's back !
Just came here after the announcement. I never thought obsolescence could make me happy.
Thank you yesterday's Nintendo Direct, he solved the mystery, and now the gentleman is back.
Oh boy, the Layton fanbase is literally raiding every single Layton related video on UA-cam with joyful comments. :-)
WE'VE WON
IT'S FINALLY HERE
It makes me very sad, the professor Layton series was truly amazing and some of my favorite games. I also wish they hadn't made the Katrielle game because it ended in such a bad note.
Well, I guess the description aged poorly because Professor Layton is back with a new game :D
I can't wait for The New World of Steam.
I love this series so much, I've been playing since 2009. I'm so sad to see them basically gone. I miss these games so much
"Someday" is finally here! Watching this after the announcement of the new Layton game. So hyped!
There's something sad about a game series you grew to love disappearing.
BACK AND BETTER
Professor Layton will always have a special place in my heart for being so wholesome and entertaining in a time that was maybe the hardest in my life. Sad to see what happened, but maybe there will be another great title in the future.
There i one coming 😜
For those of you who haven't watched 2023 Nintendo Direct yet, you're in for a treat.
THE LAYTON THE LAYTON IS REALLLLLLLLL
PROFESSOR LAYTON IS BACK NINTENDO JUST REALISED A TRAILER FOR A NEW GAME!!!
And now he’s back!
The loss of Level 5 for me is how there is no continuation of Fantasy Life, even though everyone I’ve ever spoken about it loves it.
IT'S FUCKING BACK. NINTENDO COOKED. LEVEL 5 COOKED
New Layton game on Switch, let's go!
HE'S BACK
i used to ask for a layton game every year for christmas and often play them with my dad who loves puzzles. now im in college listening to the soundtrack while studying trying to recreate that serotonin release :(
Man I love this series, it's so nice to see people still talking about it ❤ I grew up with Layton and now aged 23 I'm still listening to soundtrack, playing the games, and finding videos like yours. Great content 🥰
If you guys haven't seen the new Nintendo direct, LAYTON IS BACK!!
I WATCHED THIS VIDEO TODAY AND NOW WE'RE GETTING A NEW LAYTON I'M SO HAPPYYYYY
WE ARE ALIVEEEEEEEE
HE'S BACK BABYYYYY
IT HAPPENED BOIS, I'M JUST SO EXCITED
9:54 AND THAT SOMEDAY IS TODAY
I'm so glad there are still people talking about Professor Layton. Professor Layton was one of the very first video games I ever played. Arguably it was the series that introduced me to the world of gaming along even playing The Legend of Zelda and Mario Party 8 after Layton. Even though there is little hope Professor Layton will return, I'm glad I have these amazing memories of this game and maybe one day, Level 5 will get back on their feet and we'll get a new game or a remake!
so happy they annonced a new layton... can't be happier
I had given up hope a long time ago. Then I woke up on the 8th of February and saw a message from my friend telling me there was a teaser for a new Layton game. I didn't believe her. I still can't believe it, tbh xD
Who’s hear after the direct! 🎉🎉
Meeeee!!!!
This is one of my favourites series of all time. The atmosphere, the scenery, thr music, the characters and the message are all so unique to this series. No game has ever recreated the feeling this game gave me
A true gentlemen returns when he is needed
Soooooo we all just here huh
I got a 3DS just before I got cancer as a kid. Many people gifted me games for it to play while I’m in hospital. I played the whole Professor Layton series available (up to miracle mask at the time), definitely my most played game in hospital because it was just such a good story and never boring with the puzzles.
I played the crossover in.. I think it was the year it came out, actually, and during my Ace Attorney phase. And then over the last week, I played my first proper Layton game - Miracle Mask.
Boy oh boy, did my impression that Hershel Layton is a functional person shatter *quick*. This man needs so much therapy
He really did a good job covering up his trauma during the crossover..
