Then why is there still slavery in Africa and in Muslim countries to this day? There's basically a highway of speedboats between Tunisia and Italy (never successfully held colonies, btw) where a bunch of North Africans are making bank off sending future debt-slaves (or in yesterday's case, terrorists) into societies they have no business in after essentially paying for a $5000 Uber to escape non-existent conflict....
The western nations were the first to abolish slavery. It took the rest of the world to get with it. What color do you think the first seller of slaves to the colonists was, may I ask? ;]

Soumahoro just addressed France's - or to be more precise the 5th republic's' - main issue very clearly. To fix a problem, you have to acknowledge there is a problem in the first place. And as long as it's colonial and collaborationist past won't be aknowledged they won't be able to move forward and fix the issues that stem from that.

France needs to admit that the large amount of immigrants from strikingly different cultures have caused a culture clash that they didnt plan for in their education, job, housing budgets. They need to bring in immigrants into every sphere of the country(performing arts, science, military, education, etc). Socialization into French culture is a process that usually takes 2-3 generations to achieve in most countries. Every school from grade 1 to colleges should provide education about French history and culture.

Wow, Maboula was so succinct and interesting to listen to. I've spent a lot of time in Paris. Funnily enough, my first experiences beyond holidays as a child were in the area this interview took place. It had such a positive effect on me. I learnt French and kept coming back year after year. I'm a white male from the uk who had a long term relationship with an arabic woman from Paris originally from North Africa. Her family, friends and everyone were all kind to me. It was one of the best times of my life actually. I only once experienced a remotely racial incident towards myself for dating her by a drunk passer-by. It meant nothing to me but a lot to her. Be kind to each other. We don't all mean to harm one another :)

it is in fact a very sensible topic in EU this racist discussion. Some countries dont even want to hear this about and when the topic rises they leave the chat. The problem is inheritly like the old proverb "you reap what you saw". Cheap labor is not the solution for future but it raises the capital of the country. In short, we can slave you imigrants but you need to accept it, otherwise you go back. And thats how France recovered after WW2.

I think I'd get discriminated because I look a little bit MENA and I know how Europeans treat them. Also, here in the states, people aren't afraid to speak up against racism.
