@@LewisgardenservicesLtd safe bet when the neighbours see the hedge they'll be calling you for your green fingers. Also I'm surprised people haven't asked a question or two for gardening tips or advice
I have a similar hedge in my garden but it’s a lot longer. It’s quite high so I’m using a ladder that folds into a platform and standing on that with my rechargeable pole trimmer or using telescopic manual shears. My shears are blunt and need replacing. I can’t cut the top of my hedge with my pole trimmer because most of the branches are too thick. So can I use my rechargeable Pole chainsaw to cut the top and finish off with the pole trimmer, like you. Thanks.
Definitely unless it's a big job for saws and thick stuff for hedges, so much nicer to use and better on the body. Really capable tools if you've never tried them. Thanks for watching 👍
Hi, great video. I haven't got a chainsaw, can this be done with a hedge trimmer? I know it would be a longer process, but my mum's hedge needs trimming to a manageable height. Thanks in advance.
Hi, you could definitely do this with hand tools but depends on the size in the larger branches/ trucks. Hand saw instead of chainsaw can be done. Just filmed doing half a hedge with chainsaw and other half with hand tools but may take a week or so to get out. Thanks for watching and good luck with the hedge👍
Our hedge is about 6 meters high and was hoping for reducing it to about 3 meters to get some sunshine in the yard, is it possible or will such reduction kill the hedge? They are now mushroom shaped and have been neglected for a long time
You can reduce the height of conifer hedges although the top will be ugly and brown, the sides however will only take a trim as past the growth line and you'll probably have a hedge that won't recover. Good luck with it👍
@@LewisgardenservicesLtd it's a hedge in the middle of a field so no one is gonna be able to see the top of the hedge so no problem for that, and the hedge has been trimmed but only the first 3-4 meters from the ground up, as we we're not able to reach higher with the means that were available at that time, so then they turned into mushroom shaped trees, so now the only question I had was if you reduce the trees in half if they'd die off or it's like a salix or tilia where you can cut the stem in half and they'll flourish after the cut 😅 I just don't want to kill the hedge entirely and have very little experience with Coniferae... ! thanks for the fast response!
3 of us out with any luck march til Christmas, lucky to have a seasonal worker for a few years who's happy not to be out in the worst of the winter weather, he's fab on the mower and good on the hedge trimmer too👍 have a guy in training who actually wants to work, normally look for another seasonal worker but this year that's sorted. Winter is busy for me but if I kept a full team going I'd be dead😬🙄 need a few slower months nowadays and when I didn't winter wasn't busy
It was bad !! I must have been bad as I agreed to a brandy at the end of the night !!! I hate brandy 😬, I will stick to the Stella next year lol . Andrew
Hey Bud Nice work! Question, i had to prune a large crooked conifer thuja hedge. It had some curves in it and at some point i got a couple of cm (3/5) in the brown spots. Im afraid it wont grow back, got any tips? Thx
Thuja normally recover as long it's healthy, can't guarantee it tho but I'm pretty sure they do. Regular trim going forward a possibility to keep it tight. Hope it works out ok👍 cheers for watching
I need to take about 7 foot off mine they are ridiculous what would be the best way to start I’m not confident using a chainsaw although I do have one! Gonna just buy a decent battery saw for the branches take them down to the heaving I want them then cut the main stump does that sound like a decent plan? Really would appreciate some advice?
Do you have a lawn business or only do hedge trimming? I am thinking about just specializing in hedges and shrubs and dropping the lawns. No one in my area does this.
We do both and lawns make up most of our work spring to late autumn with a mix of hedges when needed and then we do a lot of hedge reductions etc when off the lawns for winter. I think you could go the hedge and tree only route tho if in an area that can sustain enough work for you. Thanks for watching 👍
I have a three meter high conifer hedge. Would like to take approx 50 centimetres of the top. Possibly it will be not green the in the top. Can it be done or better not?
Check the inside and if it's tight enough to give a nice level hedge should be fine to do. Centre will be brown and can stay that way depending on what it's like in there. All depends how visible the top will be afterwards to look unsightly for you but 2.5m is still a good height. Good luck with it
@@LewisgardenservicesLtd Just the info I was looking for. Need a chipper shredder, but cant find the right one - you know one that doesn't become a garage ornament due to blockages and is quicker than taking waste to the dump.
Only off the blower for the tidy up. I don't get why people don't like the battery stuff on jobs like that, 20 odd years I'd have used a petrol saw for that and believe me when you're in the middle of trees the fumes are all over you, I used to come home stinking...like the old days when you'd come home from the pub smelling like an ashtray 🙄
I didn't to start with but they have their uses, not for everything tho. Initial investment was purely as my body was failing with the weight and vibration of petrol over long time use. Love an old diesel truck tho...I have a few😬 Thanks for watching 👍

@@LewisgardenservicesLtd I took an old hedge trimmer in a short form, scissors down, saw up, works wonderfully as well as the plug for the combi motor, I shortened the shaft, I work with it a lot, also commercially for over 40 years
good job but why are you wearing a hard hat and the kids are not ? nothing is going to fall on your head and a lapse in teamwork could possibly end up with a log on one of them kids heads just an observation
Cheers for the comment, I wear one as using the saw and anything bigger than a small reduction they do, not that I take too much work on like that now, any tree work and the hats definitely go on rather than left in van
You make it look it easy! Beautiful job! Thanks for the lesson!
Thanks 👍 I've done quite a few of these but this one was kind to us with the top coming off without loosing any of side. Thanks for watching 👌

Do that if you feel comfortable, leave it slightly higher than you want to give yourself some room to adjust the level possibly. Good luck 👍
@@LewisgardenservicesLtd I believe I should cut the middle lower than I want the level of the top is this correct and thanks for your advice!
@mattfowler9880 yes get the main stumps a good 6inchs lower than the finished height, remember you can take more off but can't put it back on😅👍

Tidy job mate. They can sharp creep up in height those conifers.
Cheers, they sure do. Customer wanted rear hedge the same height as sides for easier maintenance
shorter hedge in short order! Quick work on that job. How did you handle the waste cs100 or van?

I've looked for ages, not sure a towable chipper would enjoy those wide conifer tops either. Easier to sling in van/ trailer and tip in my opinion 👍
Eliet major would be the prefect shredder for that…nice wide shute all the way down to the blades
