  • The MV-22 Osprey has become the cornerstone of our Corps’ assault support capability, with the speed, endurance, and survivability needed to fight and win on tomorrow’s battlefield. This combat multiplier represents a quantum improvement in strategic mobility and tactical flexibility for expeditionary forces. MV-22 Osprey utilizes tiltrotor technology to combine the vertical performance of a helicopter with the speed and range of a fixed-wing aircraft. With its rotors in vertical position, it can take off, land and hover like a helicopter. Once airborne, it can convert to a turboprop airplane capable of high-speed, high-altitude flight. This combination results in global reach capabilities that allow the MV-22 to fill an operational niche unlike any other aircraft. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Lance Cpl. Andy Martinez/Released)

I was riding my Mountain bike Near Ambleside ,Lake District England on Monday and was treated to the Impressive sight of two of these magnificent aircraft low level flying along the length of lake Windermere .
I was so awestruck I did not get a chance to get my phone out take a picture .I think the only way to explain the awesomeness of the sighting was that I felt I was in the middle of a James Bond Movie ! Very surreal moment on my own in the beautiful Lakeland fells miles from anyone and then in blink of an eye I was face to face with two of the most amazing aircraft on earth!
Impressive, Intimidating and beautiful all at same time !

They were grounded for several years in the 90’s. My platoon had a choice once catching the bird back home on a training mission or making a 20 mile hump. We chose to hump it. 😂

I've been thinking about the Osprey lately, especially in terms of what might be done to salvage the project. I realize that against all logic, more of these planes have been ordered, but what happens at the Pentagon doesn't make the front page. I suppose a lot of people are going to retire on that deal, in style. (But not the poor tax-payer, of course). I'll tell you something funny. When the Wright Brothers decided to build a gasoline-powered airplane, they ran into a problem. There were no off-the-shelf propeller designs for them to use. Those two guys had to build a wind tunnel, and then design propellers which would generate maximum thrust, at only a a few hundred R.P.M. And they succeeded. But as faster planes were developed, the Wright Brother's High Thrust - low R.P.M. propellers disappeared. That was no accident. The military wanted to create the illusion that all airplanes need long runways. Airports are worth a lot of money. As you may have noticed, the Osprey uses Low Thrust - High R.P.M. propellers. The plane has been crippled, so that people will think that high R.P.M. propellers, operating in the vertical position, are the only way to get the Osprey off the ground. Actually, the Osprey could be converted into an excellent STOL plane, with a takeoff run of less than fifty feet. Simply eliminate the tilt wing, and then stick High Thrust - Low R.P.M. propellers on the wings. You get the same plane; for eighty percent less money. And you still don't need a runway. There's no operational reason for the Osprey to exist; it was designed to make a lot of money, and it did.
