It almost appears as if sometimes the range of NFC seems TOO low, as sometimes it seems that he needs to move the device around looking for a sweet spot.

Does anyone know how far away your phone can be from the bluetooth device, like the speaker, and it won't work?

Very important error to point out in sample code. At 38:46 they show a slide with intent-filters that you can use in your manifest to declare an activity to handle your NDEF message. The category name is shown as android.intent.category.default. In my experience, this attribute is case sensitive and the last part should be all caps. So the code should be android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"
