That's actually really stupid commentary. It's not just that this level is so elite 43.4 is fairly slow, it objectively is a very fast opening split. Farris went out in 42.8, but came back in 24.0, which is fairly slow. Hobson, who just went 1:28.8, went out in 43.5.
The individual 200 free and the 100 back are both on day 3 of the schedule, with about 30 minutes between them, and he chose the 100 back (which he won). He also swam the 200 medley relay on day 3, but that's about 70 minutes after the 100 back. Also, prelims and finals are the same day, so that's a lot.
Watching this 3 years later and seeing 6 olympians in the same heat. Just shows you how good the competition is at Ncaas
