ENFP: Openly admitting guitar to be a temporary hyperfixation

Yep. I am an ENFP and I have hyperfixations all the time. I am literally in a hyperfixation right now and am worried about when that will end. Hyperfixations are incredibly fun and I love them, but I dread the moments that they end. I could accomplish so much if I could just continue the hyperfixation until I please lol. Oh well, I will just continue amassing these skills until one day I find a way to run a company that encompasses literally all of them, so I can just hop from hyperfixation to hyperfixation and have it actually be productive! Unless that in and of itself is a hyperfixation..

(ENTP) She pretty much reenacted my learning the Guitar when I was a kid. I mastered a few quick songs and made it look like I could play and called it good. Never once learning small details such as neck, fret, any of the cords, ect. After playing my songs (the only ones I knew) I tried to explain to a few people that I did not in fact know how to play the guitar after they witnessed me playing my songs. @@kafipilko Yes. There is a reason the ENTP is nicknamed the Jack of Trades. We are frequently not the best at anything but we can quickly pick up random skills. @@HerKnightable I am an ENFP, but this very accurately describes me too lol! I've been on a break for 2 weeks and decided to learn how to make a 3d game (have only ever made 2d games, and that was a couple years ago during a different burst of energy similar to this one) and decided that I'd learn how to make a game using unity (have attempted to learn unity as a teen, but didn't have the patience or the hardware to do so), and also made my own 3d models (learned how to do that last summer) for my game. I have 2 days left until this game jam is done and a couple days after that till college classes pick up. I can only wonder if this is the end of that burst of creative energy and focus, or if I will stick with it, or how long will I stick with it afterwards? Oh and I have done almost nothing but work on this game for the last 2 weeks too lol. (Except watch some youtube, and different obligations I have, and spend time with people lol, but literally every other waking moment I am either working on the game or thinking about it.) crud, I lost The Game.

As an INTP, it was fun playing the guitar for a first month. Then I came into a 1,5 year long period of what I call "guitar depression" where I was sad because I lacked guitar skills and wanted to play harder stuff, so basically, anytime I wanted to learn a new song it was to hard for me. I am an INFJ, and the only musical thing I ever learned is singing, but that came to me naturally and in school I had to either learn an instrument or sing in the choir, which is the only reason I ever performed for anyone. That, and using it as a storytelling/making the evening routine pleasant for my kid by making up songs about him and his teeth on the spot. We have all sorts of instruments lying around, but I never get past feeling each tone in my soul and just making noises that fit my mood. I went to piano lessons when I was 10-14 and hated it!
Now 15 years later I somehow got in contact with a little music theory and my Ti loved it :D
In the lessons I learned songs with sheet music (boring), now I pick a song I really enjoy, look up the chords and play my version of it.
I get your point with learning all the chords etc. Seems so very overwhelming. But there are so many good tools and tutorials out there now (Chordify, Pianote I used). The important thing for me was that it didnt feel like I had to force myself to do it. So simple steps which produced great results (for me) was the key.
Also it was a mechanism for me to relax during my stressful masters thesis... I needed something SE other than constant being in my head I guess.

I recently started to learn how to play the guitar, maybe 3 months ago after I've gotten quite good with the ukelele.
I only started this hobby to get myself out of my head and to rest my eyes from reading books and watching youtube. Gotta take care of myself somehow. Might as well do it with something I'd find enjoyable.
I enjoyed it so much that I now have 2 ukeleles, 1 guitalele and 1 guitar...my FI can't be denied.
Btw Kristin, D chord is one fret (the bridge thingy) lower. Looking forward to a video of you playing this instrument like a champ.

(ENTP) I can relate so much to what you said. For example, a friend of mine once brought his electric guitar to school and I wanted to try to play it. I have never picked up an electric guitar in my life up to this point, but I rocked it "intuitively" with "confidence", and apparently it was good enough that another friend of mine thought that I can actually play the guitar. When I told her that I, in fact, don't know how to play, she didn't believe me. Felt amazing.

As a fellow guitarist for a little over a year now, I cannot recommend playing an instrument enough. The physically connection with music really furthers that emotional and spiritual connections to it also. There are many available resources online. You just need some structure, grit, and then some to get through it (like anything, really).
I'm also curious if any other fellow artists find themselves naturally wanting to practice more than one medium of art, whether it is new instruments or taking on completely different interests like painting, photography, poetry, and so on (I already have done photography for years and have written quite a bit of poetry). Perhaps it's just my inner ExxP coming out (Extraverted Intuition ftw!), but I can't help but want to try more. Anyone else like that? Can you also list your personality type? I'm curious!

I (INFJ) have just started learning guitar so this is great timing! My younger brother (INTJ) decided he wanted to learn an instrument as his next challenge after he finished school. He would practice every day and I was inspired after hearing him practice and how far he came in such a short time. We're not a musical family and no one can seriously play an instrument except our older brother (ENFJ) who started learning guitar in his late 20s which is why I think my INTJ brother chose the guitar in particular. I've just learnt my first chord so can definitely relate to this 8:31 😉

Have you written your first song yet? And, if so, are you waiting in hopes someone will ask you to play it? Seriously, though, good for you and keep it up. We introverted intuitive types (INTP here) really benefit ourselves, and others, by developing auxiliary means of expression to convey all those things we have to say but can't ever seem to put into words when faced with, you know, actual people with whom we are somehow expected to converse in a coherent and socially prescribed fashion.

ENFP here! Playing instruments (especially guitar) is one of the interests I've had that's lasted the longest. I started trying to learn when I was 7, and despite being on-and-off with it due to discouragement, started properly learning when I was 13. I've stuck with it, and now I'm 24!
I'm also autistic with ADHD and possibly dyspraxia, so I'm not a mind-blowing shredder or anything, but I can learn the chords of just about any song I want to play, and thanks to two years of formal lessons, I'm also getting better at playing by ear!
Anyway, rant over, but guitars and music in general excites me.

As an INTP, I had to take guitar in school, and was not really a fan. I could do it if I put my mind to it, but it kind of just didn’t peak my interest. I could learn it myself in theory, so that’s good enough for me. I’ve mostly discarded what I’ve learned, but I can occasionally remember and possibly even play some more simple songs, but I honestly don’t really care about it. If I was to choose a form of musical performance, it would be and is my voice because I actually have a decent amount of skill without requiring too much practice, and I sometimes kind of enjoy practicing it. By “is,” I mean that I’m in my high school choir right now.

When I play piano it is solely for myself, I usually do so when anxious or sad. I am able to throw myself into the music and become the emotions of the song or pour my own into it or just distract myself enough with the technicalities. It's very therapeutic. While at home I may sing for similar reasons to playing but when performing I will sing for entirely different motivations. - ENFJ
