  • Olé José is a really fun and authentic sounding Spanish style piece, written by Debbie Cracknell, and featured on the Classical Guitar Syllabus for Grade 1 with Trinity College London from 2010-2015. It is fairly difficult for a Grade 1 Standard but only due to the speed that it should be played. You can still get a copy of the Trinity book it was featured in it is a bit expensive:
    www.amazon.co.uk/2010-2015-Tr...
It was also featured in this book with other compositions by Debbie Cracnell, which is much cheaper:

I have also seen that you can download the piece for free in PDF format if you do a clever google search.
I think that Debbie Cracknell writes some very good quality pieces for guitar. Her skill is in writing pieces in different styles, that sound authentic, and are entertaining, but are never particularly tricky to learn. Therefore she writes perfect music for students, which is surely why her music is featured so often on the classical guitar syllabi. It is also hard to find much about her as a person online. I can't tell if she is still alive or not. Either way most of her music was published in the 1980s. If anyone knows more about her as a person, please let me know in the comments!

This video was recorded recently at Rokit Studios in West London. The recording and video engineering was done by Mark Rose. The guitar I used in the video was made by a local guitar maker who is a personal friend of mine named John Beacock. He only made a limited number of guitars in his lifetime so his guitars are extremely rare, however he had a natural touch and his guitars have incredible clarity and sustain, and sing like birds. The guitar was made in 2001 and has been recently restored as it sustained a lot of damage over many years of use in studies and for work from 2001 - 2012. The restoration was done superbly by Mike Walker who has now become a friend and my guitar tech.
