    That is the best forged hummingbird I've seen on UA-cam. The few others are very rough. Thanks!

    I watched the block video when it came out, and finally got around to cutting one to work on today. Got it fullered out, stared at it, and could not for the life of me figure out how to make a bird out of it. Wisely, I came inside and watched this video, which of course I should have done hours ago! Thanks for sharing your technique, and your measurements, which I remembered completely wrong. Need to go cut another block and start over. Will make something out of the one I have, but will stare at it for a while until it tells me what it wants to be when it grows up.

    I meant to add to my earlier comment that the camera work, particularly the zoom-in and close up shots really help to show how each fuller step shapes the piece. I assume the wife is the camera person...kudos to some great camera work!

    Just found your channel the other day, love what I have seen so far! Subbed after watching the Block #1 video. My wife is a hummingbird lover, so I think I will have to give this a shot!
    Really appreciate your explanation of the process!

      Thank you. These smaller projects are fun. I started building them after I got in an accident and could not do much heavy work.. they kept me in the shop and busy. I played with lots of clay figuring out little projects.

    Super cool. Tried the one piece turtle with my teacher and broke 2 legs off so has to weld em back on. A learning process for sure. This is going to be a fun one to try and make!

      That's the goal .. learn and have fun. I have several turtles in my shop that look like roadkill :) and some that are pretty dang good. The Hummingbird is a fun one. Glad you like em.

    Love it.....How long would it take you to make from start to finish? can u make a flower from a block, or, just a flower.

    • @letsgo6500
      @letsgo6500  Рік тому +1

      Thank you. About an hour or less.. if I got everything setup depends on detail. A flower from a block is a great idea.

    Really beautiful hummer! In one respect it's rough, but in another respect it's sufficiently detailed to be realistic!🙂 I find it amazing you worked out a way to make it from a single block of steel and that most of the forging work was done on the vise. I like the way you devised a way to mount the hummer in the loop on the flower. You are to be commended for an ingenious way to make the hummer...well done!👍
    I have a close lady friend who is a hummer fan with feeders all over her place. I'd like to (try) make one for her. I have some 1" square stock... do you think that would be good to use for the block? (BTW, subscribed)

    I really like the tongs that you're using in this project made out of old horseshoes that's pretty awesome do you happen to have a video of you making them or did you gain inspiration from somebody that I can look up I really enjoy your little block animals that you are making

    • @letsgo6500
      @letsgo6500  Рік тому +2

      I am making a video on the tongs. They are fun and functional. I get asked about my horseshoe tongs alot. Good project to make.

    Would bringing the 2 initial cuts closer together, say 1/4" rather than 3/8", reduce the platform where the wings are elevated from the body? Or do you think that would leave too little metal connecting the 2 Y shapes (body and wings sections) and risk breaking them apart? Thanks.

    • @letsgo6500
      @letsgo6500  Рік тому

      You could reduce it. This one comes out pretty heavy bodied.

    Would it be worth drilling out the end with the wider cut? Then it'd be round on the bottom to start.

      Bad burn.. I had a project in vise and turned and put my arm right into it. Burned deep then got a little infected. It's getting better but doesn't look very good.
