Yes, Rinpoche always makes us laugh to stay awake and alert during Dharma talks, but at the same time, important points about practicing Dharma is "quietly" planted.

This teaching from Tsem Rinpoche is extremely easy to understand, logical, true, straightlforward & profound.
Dharma is precious but the human beings make the treasures worth less than a penny. Extremely sad.. many times we thought we are practicing dharma but we are actually not & doing the opposite.

This is a really really good video, will remind us why we are not ready for tantra...it also includes an aspect I really like about Rinpoche's talks, his 'rhetorical' questions.
He asks us questions that we can turn inwardly, like "do you still get depressed?" and "do you give up?"
He trains us to examine ourselves and our minds. He who removes your fear of facing your mind so you can continue your practice when you are not with him.

I've always love watching these old teachings of Rinpoche as they are not just funny but actually very profound and it is the Lamrim just skilfully packaged to suit our silly unfocused minds. It is rare and very hard to find Gurus like Rinpoche, they are getting less and less hence when we come across such a Guru, we should never take it for granted for our good karma may run out soon. Don't underestimate the Buddhas x

A lot of people do not like it as it is so direct and right to the point about the selfishness of human being and its wrong motivations. Rinpoche give us very important advices:
Do not run away from difficult situation,
when someone gets to your nerves,
    show patience
do not shout and hurt them back ever.
    Stop feeling sorry for yourself

If you see tsemtulkuDOTcom, Rinpoche has always said it is the greatest gift a parent could give their child because it is the one thing that can ensure they will grow up to make the right decisions based on wisdom. After all, a higher education, lots of money, big house, etc will not guarantee they grow up to become good people!

Rinpoche is so kind. He tries so hard to push us to excel , to get over our hang ups. Regardless of the negative perceptions that people may have over the way he teaches. It's like pulling out a bandage, if you yank it out fast, it's gonna hurt.. but it's quick, rather than prolong that suffering by going slowly. Sometimes it really takes a good scolding to get thru to us. Or he can tell us everything is fine. Take your time. I don't that'll work against lifetimes of negative habituation.

I have listened to this video many years ago, and I have just watched it again. Though there are quite some jokes in the video (I feel the intention is to make the audience stay awake & alert), there are some very important points in this talk.
Firstly, if I call myself Buddhist, then I need to behave one. A true Buddhist is one who follows the footsteps of Buddha, who is kind, compassion and would sacrifice himself for others. If I call myself a student of Tsem Rinpoche, I should not behave in a way that would embarrass my Guru. How not to embarrass my Guru? By not showing black face, by not being lazy, by pushing myself to do things which I don't usually do to benefit others.
Another point which I feel is very important, is not what we offer to Buddha on the altar. Like Tsem Rinpoche said, Buddha didn't sit on the altar to drink our offerings. Tsem Rinpoche's way of Dharma is always about transforming the mind, to push ourselves, to benefit others. This practice is pervasive in Tsem Rinpoche's teachings.

Totally agree with you. This is 21st Century dharma and an example of a real guru , living , teaching in this world together with his students in the same environment. If any of us gets enlightened now in this planet, in some region in our human form we will do everything as a normal human would do still but the difference would be what is inside our mind.If we are close to the guru we will see how the pure mind manifest like this video of Rinpoche. No one will deny he is someone special.

Tantra is cutting through our finite self to see the light which animates us. Once seeing it, we can never go back; and becoming the more of this light we gradually disembody. This is real nirvana. It is like a radio signal that wakes up and says, "Hey, this radio, subject to breakage, it not me!"

A short and sharp teaching for all practitioners to listen to. The funny parts are not how Rinpoche acts out the how a student who did not practice the Lord Buddha's teachings. It's the behaviours of us as a student who not practice well that are really embarassed ourself.

Tsem Tulku Rinpoche's attitude is humorous and cuts down the point. His attitude makes it easy for the west to learn dharma, he has a different method of approach. Just because it may seem a bit odd at first, does not mean that he is not authentic or he's not a real teacher. Infact, if you understand, and listen closely, you will see how wise he is, and how he cuts right down the question and makes things alot more understandable and make sense.

Crazy like us! It is a reflection of his students - a lama will manifest in whatever manner we need for him to get through to us, and in whatever way appeals to us. We probably wouldn't be sitting here listening to what he has to say if he were a staid old school lama with a very quiet voice who had to speak through a translator! That's why there are so many styles and Buddha gave 84000 teachings, because there are so many types of minds! :)

in your book i read, "holiness is not a state of you having a halo. holiness is you trying harder." sayonara to depression. So my question is if you try again if you failed once is that like trying harder? I was like, it's really scary to try again. How do I know I won't just fail again? I could just give up and stay home? It was my fault I failed. So if I try again without transforming myself, won't I just fail again?

Buddhism is one of the best religions I know of, with many terrific ideals / practices. However, I think that overall religion in general has caused more harm than good... at least in the modern world (particularly Christianity, Judaism, and Islam). What the world needs now is one universal ethical / moral code (instead of so many religions)... and that universal law would be "Treat others as you would have them treat you." Simple.

Here's one perspective: Religion divides. It must create separatism and elitism to survive. It must also resist the pursuit of knowledge and critical thinking to survive, b/c "almost" all religions could not exist if people are permitted to question and explore other ways of viewing the world. Logical, free thought exposes too many flaws with religious doctrine. This is why fear of Hell, punishment, or being ostracized limits room for doubters.

Yes, and link that to the Eight Verses of Mind Transformation, which Rinpoche focuses a lot of his teachings on (you can go to his channel and search for it, he gave a teaching on it in 1998!). Rinpoche gives us simple logic that we can apply to our everyday lives, to introduce harmony into our lives and relationships immediately. No point giving us tantra and higher practices if we can't even show an iota of patience when someone ticks us off ;)

Hehehhehhe,....most wonderful and magical teaching. I almost peed myself laughing years ago, watching it for the first time. I do marvel at the inventive mood change of friendly teachings or harsh teachings. Hehehehhe....I have to laugh so much.....but the core of the teaching is double standard, as all religions or spiritual teachings have double standard as core teaching. ....but pushing to open is a most difficult concept, as we cannot push to open, we can never push to open.
Openness is something we can possibly find after attaining or maintaining proper shine or shamatha.....but many humans do not bother to go that far. Dharma seems to be one of the most difficult things to teach, as humans have to discern their own mental movement., to be able to attain openness after that.
It seems that many teachers sometimes do not have the hard maching gun mouth , that might be needed to awaken or stifle humans out of their numbness or ignorance. Therefore all methods should always be used in contrast.....and possibly in the degenerate time.....we do need more hard teachings or more stifling teachings.
Possibly this talk will go down in history as one of the true classics. (for me at least)
Thanks so much.....as most tibetan teachers which I ever met, never had this style.

Thnaks for the info , but i seem to have learned (in an individual and most private setting) a lot from the late 14th Shamar Rinpoche and Shamar Rinpoche is a very high lama. Since then I have curbed many things including my language. In fact I can be more harsh than tsem tulku or I can be very kind. I can even explain the bible and Buddhism in full harmony.(as in essence they seem to be the same). The bible however does describe a very broad sense of man(ADAM or EVE in pure concept) and also describes the nations from a most vast perspective. For buddhists I seem to be vajraborther but for all else I like to be called full postulator. You do not know what this word actually implies, but tsem tulku can find out in debate, if i am really a full postulator. Regular humans have much to little information , knowledge or wisdom to know or test if I am a full postulator. Also if regular humans do not understand or see the illusion of their own afflicting emotions, they will never be able to discern me as a full postullator. And also if you do not know full postulation , you do not know what the current seeming controversies or Dorje Shugden or the KArmapa issues are about.(...but we will also see things unfolding there next to the Gaza strip.) HAve fun.

Oh, its actually no problem for me, as he is probably more liberated than me. He had given me a most hard time and in a sense I am most grateful, although at the time , I did not understand it at all. Besides his half brother Jigme Rinpoche is still alive and they seem inseparable. Next to that I have full conviction in Karmapa Thinle Thaye Dorje, as being able to continue the KArma Kagyu tradition correctly. Tell me, why do you think that the Dalai Lama forbid the practive of Dorje Shugden, and do you know of the myth of how the former human manifestation of Dorje Shugden is supposed to have been murdered or silenced ? Hehehheh....I like to hear your thesis, and do you know if Dorje Shudgen is alive or has manifested as a human being again ? What do you know or do you have good thesis ?? I like to hear humans express free mind.

MrMaDSEGA Rinpoche is indeed very vocal and straightforward in His teaching. Rinpoche wants the best out of His students and nothing else. Hence, for those who are fortunate enough to be His students, it is indeed a great blessing. Most of His students (in my own opinion) are very well mannered and knowledgeable. The pastors are one of the many examples.

I love tsem tulku Rinpoche.. he doesnt beat around the bush. he tells it like it is. he is truthfull and 100% sincere... some people find his teachings rather un-orthodox, but if you dont like the way he teache`s dont dis-respect him.... find another teacher its simple.....

haha, this is so true, many of us always always wanted the way we want, but in fact, it is not going to benefit us, when our ego are telling us to close up the suggestion, we should in fact, work the other way round, that's Dharma. Dharma is doing what we don't like, to make offering to the buddha, make a real offering to the buddha...

@delagrazia Also, in case you missed my points earlier, different people are at different stages in their evolution. You wouldn't ask a Physics professor to teach a 5 year old math would you? No. There are some people who are more open to the rinpoche's approach, other's seek out the Dalai Lama. It takes all kinds of people to make up this world, to assume there is only one way to teach Buddhism, well that is the antithesis of Buddhism and belies a very narrow minded approach to learning.

@delagrazia It is worthy to note that Atisha, one of the most important teachers in is lineage said "The best kind of teacher is one who attacks your hidden faults." We don't grow by being told that the bad things we do are ok.
