the top of the levers are buttons to push to loosen the levers you move it some then push the button lift up move it then tighten some more. use paste wax on the bed

The protection they are telling you to use is something like paste wax. Paste wax will protect the surface and not effect the wood you pass through.

Nice score on the jointer & like others have commented paste wax is what you need on your metal surface (works great on table saws too) I'm guessing you ran the board through while standing behind the jointer to get a good camera angle but standing on other side for future use, pushing seems a more natural & safer way of controlling the board rather than pulling it

trust me on this you neeed to hook up a shop vac at least or take it outside! the shavings will go everywhere!
WD40 Dry PTFE works well as a rust preventative, I use it on all my plastering trowels before storing them. I just wash and dry them with paper towel and a light spray lasts months.
@elpresidente8730 Thanks! I will check that out. I don't expect to use this every day I am.in the shop so want to make sure it's stored well.
Clean iron surface with alcohol to remove the WD-40, then coat with Johnson's paste wax. Allow wax to dry, and then buff with a rag. Will NOT transfer to your wood, and will protect the metal, (for a long time), with a low friction coating.
