gotta love that sound. that subtle chuff you get out of those engines is second to none.

You never know, some day we might be needing them again, with the way things are going in the world theses days!

Excellent video, love the detailed close ups of the moving parts. Its also nice to see the engine in its original condition, sometimes when engines are all painted in horrible bright colours it somehow loses their original identity, long live the Rust!

Beautiful old engine! Runs very quiet, but kinda sounds like me after I walk up a lot of steps! Thanks for another enjoyable video!

Imagine how long does it take to deliver this engine from United Kingdom to Japan in 1890.

Looks like the piston had something dropped on it once in it's life while stored at bottom dead centre and seemingly enough that didn't hurt the engine at all.

There was a National redundant in old factory I started work in 1962. A big electric motor had replaced it. The engine probably went for a few pounds for scrap.
There was also a big gas engine running the second factory and it chugged away all day. That probably brought a few pounds as scrap iron although it had lots of brass and polished metal.

Wow that's from 1890s?? 1890s it was still Meiji era, it wasnt even 30 years since Japan opened up, I imagine for many people seeing this engine must have been like seeing a spaceship landed.

i find these old engines facinating. both simple and complex at the same time.
i do wonder about things like fuel consumption rates...what fuels it will run on and torque capabilities.
very detailed vid on it's function.thanks.

i imagine the japanese were stunned and went running for the hills when they first confronted this thing......i can see the japanese emperor in 1890 coming down from his castle with 400 retainers to watch 2 englishmen from Manchester put this engine through its paces.........it would be interesting to know by what method the japanese moved this 8 ton beast from one place to another

English found this technology like Japanese did. Majority of inventions come from America. It was all found - Hence the Founding Fathers.

According to my calculations, estimating a 135 rpm running speed, and a HP of 13, I come up with over 500 lb/ft of torque. At 11 HP, I still get over 425 lb/ft.

I thought that might be what he meant, but it's hard to believe that someone can be that stupid. I mean, we used to think that bloodletting cured disease too, should we have kept doing that when we knew better?

There were people who believed that child labor was great for children's behavior. Maybe we can try to imagine someone working 12/14 hours a day with a noisy and dangerous engine, and running the risks of being permanently injured. But that time...oh...that time was "perfect" for someone.

I would love to build a modern version of a hit and miss.. Just as big, but may see if fuel injection and electronics could improve them in any way - or if they are better off with only mechanical linkages.

+Carl Napp It was built just north of Birmingham England and looks more like 1910 - Here is a 1912 one from a UK museum that is almost Identical rated at 30hp origionaly designed to run on producer gas www.waterworksmuseum.org.uk/?module=photogallery&class=enlargepic&id=12633131

This probably is a very stupid question, but how was the engine connected so it could actually do work? Were belts connected to the flywheels to power other things? or did it have a drive draft out of it?

    • @thephilpott2194
      @thephilpott2194 8 років тому +2

+Brandon Ly Not a stupid question. If you look at the two flywheels, one of them has a smaller wheel attached to the outer edge. a belt would generally be run from this to power something.
