Destroyed dreams: Mao Market fire leaves several women with uncertain future

- Kohima businessmen and women incurred massive losses after a fire tore through the Mao market and NN markets, two of the biggest commercial hubs in city, gutting no less than 200 shops.
Admittedly, the fire has affected worst the petty vendors, who sell fruits, vegetables and other small materials to earn their livelihoods.
Alinmei, a vendor who sells her wares at the Mao market, said that "not a single grain was saved" from the fire.
She said: "I have been living in Kohima for 18 years. I have 6 children. I sell rice, eggs, pigeons, fish, and many other things. There is nothing left to be taken."
As the fire raged on, several cylinders exploded, increasing the footprint of the blaze, which had reportedly occured due to a short circuit. Around 20 fire tenders from across Kohima, including engines from Khuzama and Chumoukedima, were brought in to fight the blaze, which was brought under control after 2 hours. Over 150 firefighters were engaged in the fight. Mozhuli Koso, Chairman of the Mao Market Organisation, says that women who completely depend on the market for their sustenance were the worst-affected.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio visited the site of the fire earlier in the day, providing 20 lakh rupees from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund as financial assistance to the affected families.

Fire Brigades in Nagaland is completely useless. The fire most of the time burns out itself rather than by the fire brigade.

The actual cause of the fire is officially not known yet but nowadays many culprits just put the blame on electrical short circuit just to avoid being blamed.

Hope the owner of NN market will now be more responsible in ensuring the maintenance and safety of his building, thereby, the safety of his tenants. It’s not good enough to just build a tin shed, albeit 7 storeys, and think it’s safe enough to rent out to unassuming tenants who think they’re safe enough. Every building owner has the “duty of care” to ensure their rental property is not a “hazard”, a disaster waiting to happen, which unfortunately, in this case, it was.

Take fine from the House owner for not keeping their waste in proper below the house and near the road and Take fine to the fire department if they were drunk and not in proper uniform. Better don't depend everything on CM fund

Each vendors lost lakhs on their products. They are not even crying, if it was me i would have broke down in tears and couldn’t even speak cause i understand how much loss they might have gone through. I just pray they get through this loss and stand again. Fire in BOC happened in 2015 as well, i hope we remember that. Its been twice now, is it intentional or an accident but i doubt.

Prayers up for the affected families. But something like this was bound to happen... kohima is just too congested. The geographical surrounding its region is also too weak to bear hundreds of houses in an inclining slope... a strong quake, God forbid, will easily bring everything down.
Had this accident occurred before polling day, they affected people would have got more attention, unfortunately, it happened when polling was over.
An opportunity to raise our voice has passed by, and that opportunity will come again after 5 years.
