you can watch many videos where drum 'experts' hit there 30 super special cymbals in a break to a crappy four on the floor beat, but none can match Steve's ability to build enchanting riffs that drive the music forwards. and he's physical with it, not like radiohead's drummer doing a lazy version of ceremony. steve clatters it out with his whole body. glad to see him on real drums again live.
@weta - yeah "The Him" is a great song, I think Movement is looked on as a great album now, its almost as though its a 3rd JD album, Ian would have been proud!
I can't stop to watch this video! i really love it, The Him is my favourite New Order's song... they were too young. And yes, they are still Joy Division!
Without a doubt I believe the band was heading in the same direction with or without Ian. But I could only imagine how they would sound if he were alive. The remaining members did stay true to his vision of experimenting and pushing the envelope.
I was sitting in the crowd waiting to see Hawkwind, who were on after New Order, tripping my nuts off. These guys came on and blew my mind, it was mayhem but they where so unlike anything I'd seen before! When I got home I bought the album. Seen them at Glastonbury 1987 and 2005, they still give me that vibe!
I've never been much into this song on 'Movement', but this live version has something about it, I like this better than the studio version. Plus the video footage gives the atmosphere of a warm June evening at Glasto, sun setting in the background, everyone chilling out. Interesting to see New Order at this early stage, still trying to find their musical direction after the loss of Curtis.
I'm glad there is film of this performance because I was at the foot of the Pyramid stage puking the scrumpy up while tripping balls on mushrooms so I missed much of it, well, I was only 14. I can remember liking what I heard though.
Windowpane blotters ,new order and lasers ...mind totally blown and I was 16 and had school on the Monday ....one of the true highlights of my life so far
@claudioeyemou...yes, "The Him" is a pretty cool song. I liked their first album (Movement) even though a lot of people dissed it. It had a great cover. I had a silk screen made to the design and did some t-shirts in 1986
I love this song ... I hate to be that guy but Jesus Christ the cameraman either has never used a camera before or is on acid. To be right on top of the musicians and be totally unable to keep any of them in frame for more than a second is really distracting. But better than nothing I suppose.
good song sounds so much like joy division. early new order was by far the best. that whole show was a damn good one. the sound also played there! if anyone doesn't know who the sound is check them out! if u like jd/no you love the sound
I know people who are Joy Division fans who completely discredit New Order in having any talent. I see it differently. New Order is the band that was Joy Division and had the sense, and respect to change their name when their very loved singer killed himself. Movement is exactly where Joy Division was going and I am bemused by JD fans who don't like New Order.
JD fans fail to see past Ian, they forget Barney worked so damn hard crafting all the rest of it with Peter and Stephen, always preferred NO to JD for the sheer creative vision and pushing boundaries
I agree at least for the early years of New Order. I believe that a next Joy Division album, had it been made, would have sounded a lot like Movement. They went in a distinctly electro-pop direction after 1985 or so, which isn't really anything I'm interested in. But there you go.
+1 ... and I Love both. And i think JD would never become that dark like New Order was in the first Days/Years, but yes, Pop like the later years. And I think, if the history of 1980 would have been different, JD Split Up before 1990 ;)
Just read about this gig in Steve Morris's memoir: apparently Bernard was falling down drunk and abusing the audience between songs. Looks like it was still a pretty good concert though!
@FWFWFWF Yeah he listen to a lot of krautrock but ive heard him mess up on disorder and isolation maybe he just advanced with time while others stuck with what worked
Partly. Also I think NO got worse when they started to sound more polished generally. For me, Barney's daft lyrics started to get tiresome. Also I think Barney, Hooky and Gillian are really punks (ie., make amazing music out of a limited playing ability) whereas Stephen Morris is a very accomplished musician. In the live sets you can see that more - the others are often playing the wrong notes but he soldiers on perfectly!
Bueno Acá se puede ver de dónde salía toda la influencia de Sumo + Jim Morrison + Bob Marley & the Wailers + Lou Reed...... listo Ahí tenés la fórmula....
Totally agree with you on Stephen Morris! His input on Joy Divs "Colony" is awesome! I liked New Order to start with, and bought several albums and singles. But then they just slipped into the comfort zone, and became so formulaeic that i totally lost interest. Mr Morris was wasted on New Order. As they ""developed", all they wanted was a drum machine to complement their tedious, clichéd riffs.
After many years of reflection, for me Stephen Morris is New order's most talented member. He really holds their songs together.

Hahaha barney shushing the crowd
tight drumming. top record. the him. sleep well ian. icb.
Best moment of New Order's career on film: Barney Shhing the crowd xD
I've met New Order a couple of times and Mr. Morris is an absolute Gentleman, lovely bloke, really!
totally agree.... i love all these guys but his drummin is amazing
Shhhhh it's not over yet
One of the best songs of New Order. It contains the best of New Order and Joy Division.
@weta - yeah "The Him" is a great song, I think Movement is looked on as a great album now, its almost as though its a 3rd JD album, Ian would have been proud!
The cameraperson is totally obsessed with Gillian Gilbert.
I would be too!
She is an 80s OG
I can't get enough of this
I can't stop to watch this video! i really love it, The Him is my favourite New Order's song... they were too young.

puking and tripping on mushrooms while securing a very strategic position at a new order gig...mate, you were one advanced 14 year old!
Windowpane blotters ,new order and lasers ...mind totally blown and I was 16 and had school on the Monday ....one of the true highlights of my life so far
i set my clocks on steven moris's drumming...daylight savings time more like steven morris time!!

seen new order 3 times in 84 86 and 99 fantastic live band.
I always think about how drunk they were when they played here.
whoever is controlling the camera really needs to stop moving so much, other than that I love this song!
SHHHHHHHHHH!
peter hook is wearing a suit!
He often wore a suit during this period.
good song sounds so much like joy division. early new order was by far the best. that whole show was a damn good one. the sound also played there! if anyone doesn't know who the sound is check them out! if u like jd/no you love the sound
Ian would be so Pride
So can be said about guitars. These are the characters of New Order (primarily - Joy Division).
I know people who are Joy Division fans who completely discredit New Order in having any talent. I see it differently. Movement is exactly where Joy Division was going and I am bemused by JD fans who don't like New Order.
+rawk72 Yeah..Me too.
Yeah! I think people expected them to stand still musically which is silly.
JD fans fail to see past Ian, they forget Barney worked so damn hard crafting all the rest of it with Peter and Stephen, always preferred NO to JD for the sheer creative vision and pushing boundaries

Epoque de recherches, époque de trouvailles.
Mrs. Morris is pretty cute...
Does anybyody have footage of The Sound playing with New Order on this same date? It would be incredible to watch that happening!
Just read about this gig in Steve Morris's memoir: apparently Bernard was falling down drunk and abusing the audience between songs. Looks like it was still a pretty good concert though!
more classic early footage . its fuckin everywhere on youtube and i fuckin love it hur hur
That voice you mention is Peter Hook's...
listen to thos DRUMMS godamn hes fucking BADASS
To me here there still Joy Division
@FWFWFWF Yeah he listen to a lot of krautrock but ive heard him mess up on disorder and isolation maybe he just advanced with time while others stuck with what worked

Totally agree
Can someone tell me what "The Him" is?
it is mentioned on Dreams Never End too
It's like the her only opposite
It's Ian curtis. This song refers to him
Sure Ian
Bueno
Acá se puede ver de dónde salía toda la influencia de Sumo
+ Jim Morrison + Bob Marley & the Wailers + Lou Reed...... listo
Ahí tenés la fórmula....
Ian Curtis.
Must have been the first time he/she used a camera.
The human Oberheim

not unappreciated by me
Bateria show.
I've had a horrible bad trip on acid with this song
Pernod. That is all.
Don't take the brown acid.
Cool ripoff of Bauhaus' Bela Lugosi is dead.
