Warlock is my favorite class in BG3 because of their ability to use hidden dialogue options. Great Old One subclass give free casts for Speak With Animals and Disguise Self, and at level 3 you can cast Detect Thoughts.
When do you get this? Is that GOO exclusive? I am level 4 and don't have any of those on my GOO warlock but maybe I just didn't pick them and forgot lol
Excited for more class overviews in the days before the release. If I wasn't set on doing my necromancer playthrough first I think you would have sold me on Warlock.
With these class overviews, can you mention which companions use the class? Will help people choose which class they want to play, without overlapping with characters they want to fill the party with.
@@collindouglas8188 Indeed. You can even play him as an Origin character, so if really enjoy the class fantasy, it's highly likely that you will get a much more in depth story if you play as him instead of a custom warlock.

On the Pact boons they Homebrewed the Pact of the Blade to use your Spellcasting modifier instead of Dex or Str. In Wolfhearts video he shows the final image on the Blade pact. So they pretty much put the Hexblades Charisma perk onto the Pact of the Blade.
I’m excited to see how the Archfey pact will combine with the revised Pact of the Blade that gives you charisma to damage like Hexblade normally gets. The blink could be really good for diving onto archers and mages, and then being able to easily get away and go back to eldritch blasting with misty escape if things get dicey. Might combine that with Ancients paladin for a kind of fey knight character.
Here I'm thinking, Dark Urge and Great Old One because of the similarities between mindflayers and other aberrations that dwell in the far realms atop of the illithid powers we can get.
I'm thinking dark urge GOO warlock for second playthrough. Basically, a character with way too much weirdness going on in their brain, desperately trying to keep it together :D
Fey's charm abilities theoretically should be able to have a big impact, I mean one only needs to look at Force Persuasion in the KOTOR series to see that. The question is if the developers will spare it enough thought.
Warlock seems like a good class to multiclass with as they get 2 spell slots at level 2 and don't get a third until level 11. Getting them to level 3 for the pact boon or 4 for the ability bonus and then switching to another class is something I want to try on one of my playthroughs.
I really want to know what the Patron Interaction for your Tav Warlock is like. I don't want to assume something big and impactful, but with this game you just never know. Always liked Fey and more "Mind Control" Focus Builds, so the Fey Warlock is on my shortlist to play.
I absolutely love the sound of the eldritch blast, gotta say. Playing EA, it felt like a tear in reality or something. Super impactful. Just not quite right in a great way.
Since Amon Jerro in Neverwinter Nights II, also the first game I was able to pick the Warlock class as a player, I fell in love with this class. Now with a Great Old One Patreon and Illthids abound, the Lovecraftian part of this adventure gets better and better. Thank you very much for the content. i am actually thinking of playing a wild magic sorceress multiclassing into the archfey warlock. its pretty thematic and also dpr wise isnt so bad as long as u pick up the classic invocations of agonizing blast and repellelling blast.
I like to associate the "Pact" part with Elder Scrolls' Hermaeus Mora. Especially with the Old Ones. You're not in servitude for anyone, you're just in a mutually beneficial cooperation. You get scary otherwordly powers while your patron gets to maybe send you on a mission or keeps you powerful for as long as you pursue something a bit more specific. This part is what makes the RP for Warlocks so great. You can make your character an intelligent scholar who wanted to tap into old power or maybe a desparate thief who sought dark powers to save him from his darkest days.
This is exactly the type of content I am interested in for Baldur's Gate 3! As someone who specifically have waited with playing/following almost any of the Early Access content, but love turn-based RPGs and have played many of them. I am looking forward to watching the rest of your videos for each class. Great overview.
I like blade pact warlock, my cannon is he was a sales man who sold his wife for magic so he could sell more,likes to use charm And confuse with summons to keep the enemy busy while he shoots them from far away. Maybe go into assassin 3 levels and 2 into fighter so I can eldritch blast spam and stabb with my daggers lol
My favorite class flavor wise, but man is it rough being Eldritch Blast the Class at times. Interestingly, they're sort of buffed from standard 6E when you consider *all* spell preparations can only be set via level up, as opposed to long rests.
It was pretty much set in stone that my first run would be as a warlock from the beginning, but as soon as they announced that your can interact with your patron, there's no way I'd play anything _but_ warlock the first time around.
I'm loving all the BG3 content these days. I know this wasn't meant to be a build advice video, but at some point I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on lockadin in BG3. Sure, you can still do it, but given the seeming absence of hexblade and the level cap, are there better options?
Knowing Larian's heavy usage of Pet Pal in Dos 1/2 going Beast Speech isn't the worst idea. Its a shame its got very little use in EA. Talking to the squirrels in the Druid Groove makes it worth it though. Especially if you want to give up Repelling Blast.

Also, just looking forward to pushing people off cliffs and spamming eldritch lol. Maybe ill multiclass with bard down the line for some new buffs and the short rest ability.
I'm in a campaign right now where I started as a pact of the blade warlock. I intended to go fiend but the DM convinced me to try archfay. So I made him take a pact with the Queen of air and darkness. As I leveled i multi classed pally as a lockadin after the DM had the queen name me Winter Knight (which I loved as a huge Dresden Files fan). When the game drops I'm gonna try this in my co-op campaign my wife and I are gonna do.
Was torn between trying Monk out (haven't since BG2) or going Warlock that NWN2 made magical for me. From this video, damn high chance I'll go for a pure Warlock. Multi-class is tempting and the "high level" ability isn't so great but the spells and cantrips are awesome and unique, going to make one heck of a story coaster combined with Dark Urge I think. Mort (on the 0.01% you read this) would you say Mask and Speak Beasts are worthwhile? I've seen an animal potion in the wikis but I'm unsure of availability and speaking to animals was incredibly useful in DOS2. I just struggle with the idea of not having repelling blast early >_>
There's a lot of way to talk to animals in this game so I don't care for it, mask could potentially be useful in the city section but its too early to say how big of an impact it can have

I generally don't play mage classes. I mainly use them for Buffs, haste and the like. However, I gave warlock a go recently on bg 3 and gotta say I fell in love with it and I might start my first playthrough as one on full release.
For roleplay reasons, the only warlock I want to play in BG3 is Will, of course. Because at least the Patron means something, she's not just offering power, I will have to work for her. Otherwise I'll get into trouble Custom main character cannot compete with this Man... In two weeks I'll have to choose a class for my first complete playthrough. Tough choice

Larian said warlock will get to communicate with their patron in final version of the game. An amazing feature that adds a ton of flavor to the class. But while I see that working with fiend and fey warlocks, I'm not sure if they'll be able to pull it off with the Great Old One. How communication with the being like Cthulhu or entity from Far Realm is supposed to look like? On the other hand, it would be a shame to choose Great Old One as a patron, and miss out on the whole "interaction with your patron" part of the other warlock subclasses. Really curious what are they going to do about it.
I am an old-school minmaxer gamer who used to like these games (BG 1&2, Fallout, Divinity OS, etc..), but I could not get into Pathfinder WOTR. The complexity and depth killed me, and now I am not sure I want to play this type of games anymore... I will still watch your videos though :)
Pact of the Tome is amazing in normal DnD 5e. Pick 3 cantrips from ANY class list. Helps fill out your lacking utility as a Warlock and lets you pick up bangers like Viscious Mockery or Guidance. It also has a Elderitch Invocation "Unlock" called Book of Ancient Secrets. This allows you to inscribe any ritual spell from any class. Though I wish certain Elderitch Invocations were just base kit (looking at you agonizing blast!), this is one invocation that I'm not too mad about having to use up an invocation for because of how ridiculously broken it is to be able to get all ritual spells period. Unsure if that is actually relevant in BG3 because I don't know if they put rituals in the game...
funny enough, during the early years of 5e, WotC mentioned that the main idea behind warlock was flexibility. Doy you want o play vampire hunter with a crossbow, some melle and magic? Pick warlock over eldrich knight. Too bad pure eldrich blast is just too good.
Heh i remember NWN2 introducing me to both thieflings and warlocks in a videogame D&D setting in its main campaign. Probably kinda skewed thanks to that game, both terms kinda leave me slightly annoyed (thanks neeshka and depressed warlock antagonist party member, oh yh amon jerro like post below mentions)
What i find weird with this explanation on how the pact only grants knowledge, is that it doesn't fit at all with the use of Charisma as its main stat, it would be much more aligned with Intelligence. Which was the stat used in 3.5 when Warlocxk was but a prestige class. Using Charisma makes me think it's more an ongoing bargain, more like how you'd phone your internet supplier to bargain a wider bandwidth. At least that's how i'd see the game design fit into the gaming world.
I have a question for anybody that have played this type of games before. What is there to do once you reach level 12 and you won't be getting any more skills or attributes I assume. Usually games have enough levels and content for you to collect and level up to make it towards the end of the story
Do both. Take 3 levels in Blade Warlock for a rapier that scales off of Charisma and put the rest into Bard. This works great because Eldritch Blast (AKA the best cantrip in the game) and Agonizing Blast use your total character level (not Warlock level) and Charisma respectively to become stronger. In short, a 3rd-level Warlock with 9 levels in Bard is going to be just as good at Eldritch Blast as if you went all 12 in Warlock.
Hey! been watching your content for a bit now, especially the bg3 content. I was wondering, if/when you do a Paladin video could you go into the oathbreaker subclass a bit? I play pathfinder 1e and there's no real equivalent. I'm just curious as to where their powers come from, do they change much from their base powers, and well, why would someone choose to become an oathbreaker paladin? Anyway, can't wait to see more and more of these videos.
I actually love playing pure warlock in DnD, but im not a metagamer but story player, so thats why. :D But I would really lvoe to get the Hexblade subclass, I wonder how the archey houseruling gonna turn out. Warlock are still quite low in orded of which classes I look forward to play. However, the more I hear about the game, the more I want to play it. To the point I started to consider getting it still in Early Access, because I learnt you get free Digital Deluxe upgrade on launch day (on Steam at least, not sure about GOG)
This was really informative, hope you can make a more detailed vid on release talking about all the differences between the different patrons, the pact boons, the invocations, unique spells and mystic arcanum. I plan on playing a 3level rogue thief for double bonus action, loads of skill proficiencies (I find important for a main character) and 9level warlock with fiend patron for bonus health on enemy kill and fire related abilities. Also gonna go with pact of blade so I can either add ability modifier to my melee attack or get and extra attack. Gonna be dual wielding short swords to make best use of hex and be able to hit basically 4 time with 2 action attacks and 2 bonus action attacks (I’m sure you can see where I’m going with this and hex). Action economy is king in bg3. My battle tactics will be to step 1: enter combat from stealth (should be doable with high dexterity and stealth expertise) then hexing unaware enemy and sneak attacking for high initial damage. Step 2: I would in theory then attack target 4 times, each ticking off hex for bonus damage. Once the target is killed, Step 3: I would reapply hex to the next target (bonus action), fire eldrich blast (around level 5 you can shoot twice for one action), fire my offhand hand crossbow with my extra bonus action and make my way closer to the target. Once at the target, repeat step 2 then 3 until fight is over. Thoughts? 😅
Just wanted to comment that I will not watch this video since I want to avoid any and all spoilers for this game. Did not buy early access because wanted to get the full experience. BG 2 was my jam back in the day and really liked divinity original sin 2. I do understand that this game is shaping up to be a really good one by all accounts and can't wait to dig my claws in it fully! I've been waiting for this! Considering making my first Character to be a Warlock of the Old One since i love H.P. Lovecraft. So far ive been playing a Dwarfen Defender in BG1 & 2 so might be a cool new expierence. But 2 spells sounds a bit sparse.. Still anyway super hyped for the BG3 release.
I mean, honestly, most warlocks at level 11 are just going to be casting a triple eldritch blast every attack and not really worrying about spells except for utility or niche circumstances where they need a different damage type.
I am planning on making a bard, I know nothing about D&D but bards are charisma-based casters similar to warlocks right? Would multicasting a Bard and Warlock be viable? A "Ward" or "Bardock" if you will?

I like how the system seems a lot different than Divinity. Seems a lot like Pathfinder but much more intuitive.

Warlock is basically the DnD version of Kineticist, in terms of gameplay.
Yeah, Kineticist was the pathfinder version of the 3.5e warlock

With alchemy and abundance of speak with animals potions, there is really no reason to dip for THAT specific reason ;)

I've just tried a warlock for the first time the other day and i had an absolute (eldritch) blast! Looking forward to play or multiclass one when the game launches!
Where's the spell to skip forward two weeks
As a new dnd player, i love these overviews. Tiefling warlock or Paladin Oathbreaker are calling my name
Larian said warlock will get to communicate with their patron in final version of the game. An amazing feature that adds a ton of flavor to the class. But while I see that working with fiend and fey warlocks, I'm not sure if they'll be able to pull it off with the Great Old One. How communication with the being like Cthulhu or entity from Far Realm is supposed to look like? On the other hand, it would be a shame to choose Great Old One as a patron, and miss out on the whole "interaction with your patron" part of the other warlock subclasses. Really curious what are they going to do about it.

I am an old-school minmaxer gamer who used to like these games (BG 1&2, Fallout, Divinity OS, etc..), but I could not get into Pathfinder WOTR. The complexity and depth killed me, and now I am not sure I want to play this type of games anymore... I will still watch your videos though :)
Pact of the Tome is amazing in normal DnD 5e. Pick 3 cantrips from ANY class list. Helps fill out your lacking utility as a Warlock and lets you pick up bangers like Viscious Mockery or Guidance.
It also has a Elderitch Invocation "Unlock" called Book of Ancient Secrets. This allows you to inscribe any ritual spell from any class. Though I wish certain Elderitch Invocations were just base kit (looking at you agonizing blast!), this is one invocation that I'm not too mad about having to use up an invocation for because of how ridiculously broken it is to be able to get all ritual spells period.
Unsure if that is actually relevant in BG3 because I don't know if they put rituals in the game...
Warlock is overrated in my opinion. I respeced Wyll into sorcerer

funny enough, during the early years of 5e, WotC mentioned that the main idea behind warlock was flexibility. Doy you want o play vampire hunter with a crossbow, some melle and magic? Pick warlock over eldrich knight.
Too bad pure eldrich blast is just too good.
Heh i remember NWN2 introducing me to both thieflings and warlocks in a videogame D&D setting in its main campaign. Probably kinda skewed thanks to that game, both terms kinda leave me slightly annoyed (thanks neeshka and depressed warlock antagonist party member, oh yh amon jerro like post below mentions)
Warlock: I weild the power of the nine hells to lay low my enemies...and I need a quick nap every couple of spells.
unless you are rolling with a bard. then quick rest with a cast. :)
Well, that’s my second playthrough build decided. Hexblade warlock dark urge. Going to live my best Elric of Melniboné life.

What i find weird with this explanation on how the pact only grants knowledge, is that it doesn't fit at all with the use of Charisma as its main stat, it would be much more aligned with Intelligence.
Which was the stat used in 3.5 when Warlocxk was but a prestige class. Using Charisma makes me think it's more an ongoing bargain, more like how you'd phone your internet supplier to bargain a wider bandwidth. At least that's how i'd see the game design fit into the gaming world.

huh i remember back in NWN2 you could actually lose your warlock powers if you stop being chaotic. I guess they changed that?
There is no alignment in BG3.
yea but you can still become an Oathbreaker Paladin if you make story decisions that break your oath so i was assuming Warlocks get the same thing

Eldtritch blast for sniping single targets, fireball for groups of enemies. Perfect combo.

I have a question for anybody that have played this type of games before. What is there to do once you reach level 12 and you won't be getting any more skills or attributes I assume. Usually games have enough levels and content for you to collect and level up to make it towards the end of the story
This flood of BG3 content reminds me of the WoTR content you pushed out way back when it released.
Really struggling between a college of swords bard or a pact of the blade lock for my first character
Do both. Take 3 levels in Blade Warlock for a rapier that scales off of Charisma and put the rest into Bard. This works great because Eldritch Blast (AKA the best cantrip in the game) and Agonizing Blast use your total character level (not Warlock level) and Charisma respectively to become stronger. In short, a 3rd-level Warlock with 9 levels in Bard is going to be just as good at Eldritch Blast as if you went all 12 in Warlock.

I finally got my multi class a oath breaking warlock 😈 yes I have done it the meta I shall break oaths and backs of drows 😩
My plan is to go Archfey and never lift a finger. Turning my enemies against eachother is my only way.
Whats the more important starting ability score choices? Apart from charisma obviously.

I was wondering, if/when you do a Paladin video could you go into the oathbreaker subclass a bit? I play pathfinder 1e and there's no real equivalent.
I'm just curious as to where their powers come from, do they change much from their base powers, and well, why would someone choose to become an oathbreaker paladin?
Anyway, can't wait to see more and more of these videos.
I actually love playing pure warlock in DnD, but im not a metagamer but story player, so thats why. :D But I would really lvoe to get the Hexblade subclass, I wonder how the archey houseruling gonna turn out. Also would be nice to get some class specific story, in warlock case dealing with their patron. :)
Warlock are still quite low in orded of which classes I look forward to play.
However, the more I hear about the game, the more I want to play it. To the point I started to consider getting it still in Early Access, because I learnt you get free Digital Deluxe upgrade on launch day (on Steam at least, not sure about GOG)
This was really informative, hope you can make a more detailed vid on release talking about all the differences between the different patrons, the pact boons, the invocations, unique spells and mystic arcanum.
I plan on playing a 3level rogue thief for double bonus action, loads of skill proficiencies (I find important for a main character) and 9level warlock with fiend patron for bonus health on enemy kill and fire related abilities. Also gonna go with pact of blade so I can either add ability modifier to my melee attack or get and extra attack. Gonna be dual wielding short swords to make best use of hex and be able to hit basically 4 time with 2 action attacks and 2 bonus action attacks (I’m sure you can see where I’m going with this and hex). Action economy is king in bg3.
My battle tactics will be to step 1: enter combat from stealth (should be doable with high dexterity and stealth expertise) then hexing unaware enemy and sneak attacking for high initial damage. Step 2: I would in theory then attack target 4 times, each ticking off hex for bonus damage. Once the target is killed, Step 3: I would reapply hex to the next target (bonus action), fire eldrich blast (around level 5 you can shoot twice for one action), fire my offhand hand crossbow with my extra bonus action and make my way closer to the target. Once at the target, repeat step 2 then 3 until fight is over.

Just wanted to comment that I will not watch this video since I want to avoid any and all spoilers for this game. Did not buy early access because wanted to get the full experience. BG 2 was my jam back in the day and really liked divinity original sin 2. I do understand that this game is shaping up to be a really good one by all accounts and can't wait to dig my claws in it fully! Thanks for all the hard work you do, your channel is one of my absolute favorite gaming related channels!

I've been waiting for this! Considering making my first Character to be a Warlock of the Old One since i love H.P. Lovecraft. So far ive been playing a Dwarfen Defender in BG1 & 2 so might be a cool new expierence. But 2 spells sounds a bit sparse.. Still anyway super hyped for the BG3 release.

I want to play Melee focused Warlock with Dark Urge. I may try multiclass with Vengeance Paladin or Berserker Barbarian. Could not decide as of now.
I mean, honestly, most warlocks at level 11 are just going to be casting a triple eldritch blast every attack and not really worrying about spells except for utility or niche circumstances where they need a different damage type.

I am planning on making a bard, I know nothing about D&D but bards are charisma-based casters similar to warlocks right? Would multicasting a Bard and Warlock be viable? A "Ward" or "Bardock" if you will?

If you see this comment: Going to the great old one sub class, given the nature of the story and some of the enemies we are up against, is there anything else fleshed out for this particular subclass with the warlock? Or is it purely mental type effects and statuses?
Archfey blade lock with two level dip in pally oath of the ancients ....... Most likely what I will be rolling on the launch. Polearm in hand and scaling everything nice and neatly from charisma.
