  • I was given this badly abused SM7 microphone... well, it was "take it or throw it out" scenario. So, I took it home, and sought to see if it could be repaired. Man, was this poor microphone abused...
    Since this video, this mic has been given the name "GQ the SM7" as all of the patina, and blue replacement cable really make this a beautiful piece of art. Even better, this mic works pretty good, and has already been used in several recordings and twitch videos.

    Greetings!
    Love the video! Question, if i replace the capsule and just want the flat mode, when i solder to the xlr, is it just the white and black wire?

      From the diagram, yeah, Wiring directly to Black and White should avoid the filters. (I take no responsibility for any smoke that may be released) But, if you have the switches in line, you are doing the same thing.

    The Sm7bs have always been low gain though! Cloud Lifters have been a popular fix for that.

    Very cool video, it makes me sad to see tech and gear get to that state, But you sir did right by this microphone! I do have a question about the body itself, because I am doing a review and test on a new Shure SM7B. One of the points I want to cover is the "Internal air-suspension shock and vibration isolator" quote from the manual. This is most likely the reason for it's low handling noise when you move it around while using it. Now when you were taking it apart, did you see anything that would represent that "internal air-suspension shock"? I know yours is much older but I assume the body and the concepts haven't changed much. Thanks for this video, it was a fun watch!

      That is the rubber "donut" that sits between the mic element and the outer casing. That is not the issue. SM7 (and the newer SM7B) are notorious for needing more gain than your average mic. There may be some more corroded wires, or some other damage to contacts interal, but when I used a mic preamp, the mic sounds good. This mic has became my PC mic, and I have been using a Behringer Tube Pre to boost the level, and looking to swap in a DBX 286. I am not 100% sure on what the changes are between the SM7 and SM7B are, but most likely (pure guessing here) just some different materials made in the mic element. the foam cover and screws are interchangeable between the SM7 and SM7B.

      I didn't. I reused what was there.

    will this capsule fit in a SM57?

    • @AudioCraZ
      @AudioCraZ  3 роки тому

      Not possible as the internals of the capsule is far too large for the 57.
