I LOVE the call of the Fiery necked Nightjar. It reminds me of my childhood growing up on the farm, loved hearing them at night.Thank you so much for the video.
Thank you for these beautifully evocative night calls. I've been hearing Fiery-necked Nightjars calling in the early morning, but wasn't sure of their ID, so grateful ( KZN Midlands)!
Used this vid to ID a bird somewhere in the garden. Fiery-necked nightjar. Quite amazing at how identical 2 obviously different birds of the same species sound. Timing, pitch, all spot on. Wild.
Onalways here these bird calls but could for years not identify them.. And it was mostly at night.. & only certain times of the year. When they came back it was like I went aaaa It was the spotted & water thick knees!!!! Thank you so much… I can listen to them all the time and my sleep is glorious 💌🇿🇦
After many sleepless nights and various theories in our neighborhood about this mysterious, almost mechanical sound - this was the video assisting us identifying Buff- Spotted Flufftail last week. Thanks! Grabouw, Western Cape.
I grew up in a small town near the west coast called Hopefield. There was an old grass roof building across the street from my house where barn owls would nest. If I hadn't grown up with that eerie screeching sound, I would probably have been scared to death if I heard it
I can't thank you enough for this wonderful video. We live in a very rural part of Cape Town near Somerset West, and have tons of interesting bird species. Lots of hawks, eagles and owls. But there was this one distinctive call that I couldn't identify, and it turns out it was the fiery-necked nightjar! I've never seen that bird before, but we hear it every now and again at dusk. Thank you! Finally my information itch has been scratched 😂
So glad that my video helped you find the bird you have been hearing. The Fiery-necked Nightjar call is so beautiful. They can be altitudinal migrants, so that could explain why you hear them at certain times of the year. I think they move down the the warmer coastal areas in about April/May.
Fiery-necked nightjar has been a sound of my nightmares since childhood, it has been so such a weird scary beautiful sound even now because I’ve never heard anyone talk about it🤣🤣🤣🤣always thought I’m imagining things.
Hohooo,..finally,.this bird I used to hear it as a kid back in 1990s, in the misty slopes of Mau forest, in east Africa, after living in the city for 20, yrs one night I hear the nostalgic night call. So this is it's name..hahaha
1:23 lol i came for this, i keep hearing it everynight, i used to hear it growing up but it stopped. Then suddenly i heart it again every night i had to find out the name.
There is s bird that sounds like a distinct whistle that has started landing in the front yard every night around midnight. Can't find it here, it's always with a mate or two.
Thanks Lynette, been struggling with the Barred and Pearl spotted owlets. A question - I was told the pearl spotted would be more diurnal and if i heard the call at night it was possibly the barred owlet, would you be able to shed any light on that
Hi, I think that is a generalisation. I'm sure Pearl-spotted would call at night too. Their calls are very similar. Pearl-spotted has a more high-pitched call and the Barred Owlet a lower and slightly slower call.
there is this beautiful majestic bird that has made its home on a tree near to my house...i been trying to identify it...has a scream like Western Barn owl ,but isnt Nocturnal...i wish i knew what it is.
Thanks for this, got some owls identified. Sadly still stumped on something that suddenly started coming up around us every 4AM now. Creepy sounding thing. I can't find an ID for the sound anywhere.
I am verry happy with the video coz I've been looking for the fiery-necked nightjar call of which when I was young I used to be very afraid of it.😁😃 Thank you so much.
Love it! Thanks! But why is there no photo for some of them? Because google has loads... not that I’m complaining! Was just wondering... but have a nice safe day!
Hi Herta, I always use my own photos for my call videos. I don't have photos of some of the elusive nightjars. I will add a photo one day if I manage a decent one. I don't steal other people's photos off the internet. I use my own. My videos are all my own work. Hope you understand. Lynette
Thick-knees are very annoying where I live. A quiet neighbourhood in Worcester. They are always abundant on the large open grass area of the school across from my house at night, starting around 11pm
I've just moved into a complex and I am really not sure if this is a bird or something else but the noise is unbearable I thought it may be mynahs but they don't even make half the noise of what I hear and it's right next door there's a tree and I honestly think it's birds but I'm curious what bird??? I will try and record it tonight and figure this out
Hi Marie, Burchell's Coucals are not nocturnal birds. This video deals with birds that call at night and are nocturnal. I do have a video of two of the Burchell's Coucal call on my channel if you do a seach.
I LOVE the call of the Fiery necked Nightjar. It reminds me of my childhood growing up on the farm, loved hearing them at night.Thank you so much for the video.
Same here. I always heard it calling at night on the farm where I grew up. That and the howling of the jackals.
I agree! 🥰
Thank you for these beautifully evocative night calls. I've been hearing Fiery-necked Nightjars calling in the early morning, but wasn't sure of their ID, so grateful ( KZN Midlands)!
Glad this helped. Yes, the nightjars are calling a lot at night at the moment here too. Must be getting ready to breed.
Thank you for this I hear this beatiful sound every night in redhouse eastern cape and now I know its the Fiery necked Nightjar thanks to you.
Glad the video helped you find the bird. These nightjars have the iconic call of the Eastern Cape nights. I love their call.
Baie dankie vir al jou moeite!! Waardeer dit baie
Baie dankie, Ingrid!
This just helped me identify a brand new call I heard in our neighbourhood. Winston Park, Hillcrest, Durban. Buff spotted flufftail. Thanks!
Glad think video helped you too. Was the flufftail calling at night?
@@lynetterudman Yes. At dusk and dawn. Like clockwork
I live in Kloof, and I just heard a buff-spotted flufftail as well! First time I remember hearing it though. I'm guessing they live around here.
I came here to identify the sound as well, from Winston park. Its the fiery-necked nightjar
I have Dikkops and Nightjars each and every start of summer night.
Those are such magical sounds. The sounds of a summer night.

Grabouw, Western Cape.
It is an eerie sound at night. Much like those old fog horns.

We were taught that the call of the fiery nightjar was “good Lord deliver us”
Fiery-necked nightjar has been a sound of my nightmares since childhood, it has been so such a weird scary beautiful sound even now because I’ve never heard anyone talk about it🤣🤣🤣🤣always thought I’m imagining things.
It is a very beautiful night sound if you know what pretty bird is making the sound.
Brilliant work...respect from Ghana.
I came here for the Fiery-neck Nightjar.....been looking for the name since I remembered the sound
Glad you found the name of the nightjar.

Me too, just heard it
I didn't even know the name lol yet I've heard this sound so many times.
@@therepublic5525 same i just heard it a couple of minutes ago, i started hearing it this year again after so many years.
My bird owl
These thick kneed birds made me do research at 2 am tsek
Love this. Thank you
amazing owl footage
At 2:19 for the African Wood Owl - is that sharp single note call either the male or female Wood Owl or is it a different bird?
After a bit more research it seems obvious it’s neither the male nor female Wood Owl but do you have any idea what bird it might be?
@@benjaminmacqueen9739 also would love to know. I have the exact same beeping noise in Hillcrest. Ive thought maybe Bat ?
The high-pitched call in the background of the African Wood Owl call is the single note call of the Swamp Boubou.
Thank you for bringing back my sweet childhood memories, but I used to run away from some of the bird calls at night 😂😂💕
Glad I could help bring back good childhood memories.
1:23 lol i came for this, i keep hearing it everynight, i used to hear it growing up but it stopped. Then suddenly i heart it again every night i had to find out the name.
Glad you found out the name of the bird that was calling.
Enjoyed the sounds
Glad you are enjoying them.

Fiery-neck Nightjar. every night i go out for a smoke at midnight ....finally found out your name
Glad you found the name of the calling bird. In Zulu it is called uZavolo.
So it's a nightjar making all this noise at 5am 😂
Yip, see my latest video of a Fiery-necked Nightjar that I just posted. It was calling from a tree in my garden.
This video was very helpful.. lastnight we heard some weird noise on our roof, and we suspected it was an owl sound. I have now confirmed it
Glad this video helped you ID the owl. Was it the Spotted Eagle-owl?
@@lynetterudman yes

Try and get a recording and post in the Southern African Bird Calls facebook group.

How can I download them on my phone?..for my Grand Daughter...
Ettiene, look for these calls on my Xeno Canto collection. They are downloadable from there: www.xeno-canto.org/contributor/SGLTZLDXYI
Verreaux owl tonight in Knysna
Good bird to hear. They are not very common.
Lovely
Thankyou.
Beauty of nature. So great.
1:48, why I'm hearing the sound of African turtle dove call, a bird that only sings during the day
Recorded at dusk.
Thick-knees are very annoying where I live. A quiet neighbourhood in Worcester. They are always abundant on the large open grass area of the school across from my house at night, starting around 11pm
Maybe your existence annoys them & they just give it back to you.

African Scops Owl?
More sal graag wil weet watter voeltjie sing hier vanaf 4 uur in die more dit klink so owee owee of tweet tweet hier in Hermanstad Pretoria asb
Ek kan nie seker wees nie maar miskien is dit 'n Geelbeklyster or 'n Gewone Janfrederik? Al twee begin bitter vroeg sing.
Naguiltjie ❤️
