- You don't want your catcher's getting injured, but you also don't want them so far back that your pitcher doesn't get strikes. This video will show you the best way to help youth catcher's know where to set up on each pitch.
More advanced catchers will take far more into account when they set up, but for your new and youth catchers with less experience, this tip on catcher's set up will be very helpful as well as helping your catcher be more successful.
Catcher set up tips and helping catchers know how close to the batter they can be.
When I'm working behind the plate there's two things that get me worried. 1: the catcher is too far forward and is gonna get hit (I've had to call catcher interference before, and trust me I was more worried for the catcher than about giving the girl a base), and 2: the catcher being too far back and I'm going to start missing pitches because I'm so far away from the zone it's uncomfortable. I appreciate you making this video because it shows to me that you can still care about player safety and give them the best chance of being successful.
Awesome video again man straight to the point very informative I actually learned something I didn't know... I'll pass the knowledge on to both my catchers
As a catcher I usually just line up my glove near the back knee/foot of the batter and aim my glove low. Never been hit by the bat in a swing but sometimes I get hit by a flung bat. It really doesnt hurt. Also I never fully extend my arm As to not get hit.
As I watch some of your videos and hear what you say.... And I wonder, di I coach you in little leauge or high school....lol This is almost verbatim of my catcher set up method. Excellent job on video. Perfect for that new to coaching person onth know it LL that really don't know it all. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the comment and for watching.
I used to reach forward for the ball a couple years ago, my parents noticed it. I don't do that anymore but I guess I was lucky back then to not get hit.
Gret vid! This can be a big problem in youth baseball. In fact, one of the players on my little league team fractured his thumb because his hand got hit by a bat.
I am a catcher, and i was always afraid to get hit by the bat. After seeing this, did i realyse that it not happends verry often. Thx for making this video!
Awesome video! I’ve been wanting to be a catcher but like I also don’t want to get hit in the face!
u got a mask ive taken so mamy foul balls and i am fine
I have the opposite problem I get to close and I’ve got hit 2 or 3 times
to whoever made the captions, nervous*
I’m a 13U and I am a catcher. I am nervous all the time that someone will hit me😂
Thank you for this video. Any tips on if the batter is so incredibly tall? Should I just be safe or should I just see
We just pitched to a 7 foot batter last week. My suggestion. Set up as a catcher no different than an average batter. (don't try to pitch higher) Maybe go out to the pitcher and tell them. "Don't try to pitch to this guy differently. Just pitch like he's a regular size player." Same for the small guy. For safety, the taller guy is no more likely than any other batter to hit you if you keep your glove behind the batter's back foot. Their body proportions don't change.
Alright. Thank you!
Had a great game yesterday and this helped significantly. I now treat every batter roughly the same. I stay a few inches behind the back lag
3:29 that’s my old school and field
Where is that located?
2:44 legend has it he hasn’t thrown a strike yet 😂
I have a feeling that by the time they get to the majors they've already been hit enough and know the intricacies of where to stand, the same way an experienced figher can range his opponent simply by looking at them.
One time the batter was in the very front of the box and I moved with him and was in the box
When I was catching someone purposely leaned back and swing and hit my glove
i got hit in the face bc i didn’t have a face mask on and i’m afraid to catch
Stop always saying he there’s girls here too
