It's amazing how realistic this looks without hitting the uncanny valley. And this was with 9 year old technology and techniques. These guys are the real professionals, not the slackers who work in the game industry.
It’s scary thinking that our world has advanced even from 6 years ago, imagine this. You’ve been watching your favourite UA-camr and you don’t know that he/she is a programmed robot. That’s scary to even think about...
@@rubenssilveira5765 the fingers are made up of hundreds of tiny little fingers touching, and holding and grasping at each other and pulling and tearing to mold themselves into the ideal shape of their master, Ed.
+Felix Lanzalaco As much as I think this is an amazing achievement for someone on their own your comment I believe is wrong. I think Gollum was the first to do this and then they smashed it when Benjamin Button was released. That is not to take anything away from Chris as he is an amazing talent and I've loved his work since The Passenger.
+Bubblegummonsters No disrespect, but I don't think the uncanny valley effect applies to either Gollum or Benjamin Button. The uncanny valley only applies to humans that are intended to look "normal". Gollum is a creepy disgusting creature what ever way you look at him, and Benjamin Button, for most of the movie is an elderly child. Not something you would ever see. And the parts when Brad Pitt is a teenager are far from perfect. My point is, that even perfectly rendered, neither Gollum or Benjamin Button look normal. It's like a perfectly rendered talking dog. It will never look right in your mind, because we know dogs don't talk. In summary, the uncanny valley only applies to normal human being renderings that are intended to look like normal human beings.
+punchthedog No disrespect taken, we're all entitled to our opinions. The uncanny valley was originally based off robotics and how the closer something got to looking human the more we found it unrealistic and thus became uneasy with its appearance. The reason for this being because we know the face so well. (Sorry you probably already knew that but for others that don't) We are very good at detecting this with all animals we know, for example dogs and cats. If you take the wikipedia definition then in regards to Gollum you're correct. However he has close enough human resemblance that I'd still argue that if anything was off then we'd know it. He wasn't perfect but neither is the above video and both are definitely good enough to pass the uncanny valley test. To take your argument and flip it. The Beowulf in the Robert Zemeckis version was a monster with human like characteristics but still unbelievable and hit the uncanny valley. As for Benjamin Button. in my opinion he looked real as an old man. And as old and little as he was I believe you can't say that he didn't look like a human. It would be like saying, if someone created a circus 'Freak' then the uncanny valley doesn't count because they don't have what's classed as a 'normal' face. The uncanny Valley is more about the subtle nuances of what makes our soul, for example eye lid twitches, lips sticking, rather than the overall look of a face. The younger version was Brad Pitt, they just used digital make up to remove some of his wrinkles so you're basically saying Brad Pitt doesn't look human :)
+Bubblegummonsters Sorry just seen you'd written more about the uncanny valley only applying to 'normal' looking humans. So the basic definition of Uncanny Valley is based off the experiment they did with a human face. But it's not jut humans, it's anything that gets close to looking real But because our brain starts to really pick up on the subtle things, if anything is off it repulses us. You only have to look and Taxidermy to get this sense of unease. Taking your talking dog as a perfect example. If you have a cartoon talking dog, it's cute. It you render a realistic looking dog and make it talk, it's a little creepy. Why is that? It's because our brain is saying, this should look cute and friendly but it's not. The dog doesn't have to talk either. If you look at some of the CGI around of animals that are meant to look real but still look CGI, they're a little creepy because our brain is telling us something is off. So to sum up, it's very much a Psychological reaction and isn't just attached to humans.
+Felix Lanzalaco CGI isn't hollywood. CGI is asia and india. CGI is outsourced for cheap labour, that's why the quality is so bad in big films. Now and again studios in America and the UK will get hired but it isn't even common practice.
You should look at some old 3d! Trust me, I went back and goddamn! Guardians of Ga'hoole? Holy shit I never realized how good its graphics where until I rewatched it.

You are a GOD OF DIGITAL 3D!!
hobbyist with an old computer beats hollywood and the entire animation industry to the uncanny valley challenge
(Sorry you probably already knew that but for others that don't)
We are very good at detecting this with all animals we know, for example dogs and cats.
+Felix Lanzalaco
CGI isn't hollywood. CGI is asia and india. CGI is outsourced for cheap labour, that's why the quality is so bad in big films. Now and again studios in America and the UK will get hired but it isn't even common practice.

Ray tracing has existed since the end of the 60's/the beginning of the 70's. It's just that the poly count of models created before recent years hasn't allowed for realistic, let alone naturalistic lighting.
