We Had A RECORD DAY On The SAWMILL - With Some DIFFICULT Logs Along The Way // Woodland Mills

- In this video, Greg and Erik have a record day! These logs are smaller than the BIG ones we've milled in the past, but they still take work and some are a little difficult, but we make the most of them and come away with some great timbers. We milled 6 logs in one day...and the logs gave us 6 good timbers, 5 of which will be used as rafters for the barn. The logs did not produce much extra bonus material, but that's because they were smaller than are usual logs. We are still really happy with the production and the timbers. It feels good to be able to see the lumber adding up.
Did you know we are building a barn out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab this summer and are on a pause while we mill all of the lumber needed for the barn build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from @BarnGeek . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns!
• Why Do We Think WE CAN...
***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
• Sawmill Cover Build - ...
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

We Had A Record Day On The Sawmill - With Some Difficult Logs Along The Way // Woodland Mills
February 2024 - Навчання та стиль
Wow the yard must be so hard to work on the mud. Nice to have help sawing! Yup, you’re getting her done! Good work!
Thanks, Ian! Thank goodness for the skid steer- it is like a little tank in that mud. As long as it doesn’t get too deep. Thanks for watching! 😄
Erics loving it.😀😀😀
He really is! 😁
With your winch setup, I think you need to put another collar bearing right at the top under where the horizontal is welded on. I can see it will be right over your steel plates reinforcing the timber so they will need drilling. The bending moment is happening under the brace. Upper bearing will increase load capacity without bending.
Hi, Peter, we agree with adding another collar - in the plans.
Also going to add a strap to the top to help reinforce it. It’s coming down this weekend for improvements! Thanks for the input and thanks for watching! 😄
Nice job, guys!
Thank you! 😁
Howdy y’all- wow, Eric was turning out the work! Dealing with mud is not very enjoyable at all. We’ve finally dried out really well down here. If it gets to muddy up there come on down lol. Take care and God bless
Hi, Paul! Erik is doing great!
We just need a break in the weather so we can dry out - otherwise I’m heading your way 😁
Next improvement would be to build frame work for you roofing tin covers , so you can take them off and on with forks. Your a young man . But dad always said work smarter not harder.
Hi, Rick, I like that idea!
My storage area is a little tight in some places- even with the skid steer. Other thing I need to do with the tin is seal the holes. It’s not doing its job with leaks! Thanks for the tips! 😁
i would not take any dirt out creating grief for yourself down the road as you dig ot the dirt you create a nice place for water to collect to now you open up a ball of new problems
but it is you who decide what you want to do there
Hi, Jennifer, you’re right- it’s just the time of year that we need to get through. I’m going to try and grade it and hopefully that will help.
Thanks for your advice! 😄
New to the channel and love what you're doing! I've got some catching up to do. Nice work 👏🏻
Welcome! And, thank you so much for watching. 😊 And, yes, a lot has happened since this video! 😁
6 logs in one day. New PR! Nice!
Right?! Pretty happy about it! 😁
Great video. Subscribed
Thank you so much! 😄
Nice job making scraps into something useful, Greg!
Thanks! It’s already in our basement and is working great! 😁
Love the slo-mo sawdust…nice editing job, Beth! 😊
Thank you, Deana! It’s fun to see the sawdust flying all around! And, careful because if you get too close…it will definitely get in your eyes! 🤣
❤Keep on keeping on
Definitely, thank you! 😊
First rule of a log yard / mill yard in cold climates is to grade yard at night before leaving for the day
That’s a good rule - one we are learning the hard way.
I’ll do that this weekend! Thanks, Rick! 😄
We milled a lot of logs and had a record day, which is pretty exciting! These smaller logs produce timbers much faster and help out the cut list. Hope you enjoy this video! 😁
Very exciting!
@@deana1848 Thank you! It feels pretty good to get through a good bunch of logs! 😁
Looking good. How are you doing on the percentage of the cut list?
It looks like the winch is handling the smaller logs with very little flex at the top.
Thanks for bringing us along.
Hi, Mike!
Timbers:
% board feet complete = 62%
% pieces complete = 54%
Seems like when Erik and I both are working the mill we can cut about 10% per week.
Still plan on some improvement for the winch but it’s becoming essential and second nature to use.
Thanks so much for watching! 😄
I’m putting a winch in the rafters over my mill. Wondering what size winch you use?
Hi, I got the 2000 pound one from harbor freight. Seems plenty adequate! 😁
Scoop out mud, lots of base gravel, otherwise rocks will sink in mud.
The whole elevation through there needs to come down. It will be a project this spring after it dries out.
Thanks for watching! 😄
How wavy (lengthwise) does your lumber come out? I just had a sawmill almost talk me out of a small mill for milling my own framing timber..
Hi, I would say that it is still considered rough cut lumber, but the mill easily cuts to 1/16, but normally it’s dead on. Dull blades and hard knots can make a wavy cut. Go for it! 😄
