100% His live shows are insane, because he can change keys so naturally on the fly.

Jeff Buckley is arguably the most gifted male vocalist to bless the music scene. Obviously he’s most known for his rendition of Hallelujah, however Lover, You Should’ve Come Over, is imo his best work vocally and really shines just how amazing he was.

Agreed, though if push comes to shove and I had to pick a favorite, I think Vancouver is it for me… the complexity of the chords, the structure, the way he ends it?! Man… if only he had been to really lean into that more going forward.
But, I also would be remiss to not mention some of the stuff on the Grace Legacy Edition, which is how I first discovered him. “mama, you’ve been on my mind” has become a roadtrip staple of mine for years now, hehe. Kanga Roo, always love a Big Star cover AND a really interesting one at that. And his Lost Highway cover too… so good, he made it so sparse with that intense longing feeling… arguably the same emotion the original (and other country of that era) was eliciting, but Hank Williams used a totally different style to do so.

Loved that "seems like the notes are wrong but they are not" comment :) Jeff was a genius of using modal changes, kinda like Sting, but in his own way ofc. The most striking to me in his songwriting is how he uses dynamic changes, the contrasts, etc. Both very emotional and very clever musician
Good call on the Sting comparison! Sonically and genre-wise, they’re not particularly similar (both are insane talents, of course haha) but, they for sure both have that instinctual ear for modal borrowing and how those single note alterations to a basic minor or major scale really elicit an entirely new vibe when used in specific contexts. It in no way affects the music or my love of Buckley but, I’ve often wondered what his theory knowledge was like. Was he just working by ear (wouldn’t surprise me), could he nerd out on specific borrowed chords and weird melodic minor mode names, something in between? We may never know, and his music will remain consistently inspiring to new generations of musicians either way, but I am always curious about that, just as a theory nerd myself haha 😂
OOOOOh I like how you clocked "he has so much vocal control he can fake being out of control." You absolutely nailed that, it's very accurate. Also, it's funny how you at first said the notes sound wrong. Most of the song is in a minor key but also there's some dissonance there that gives this some serious tension, beyond just how people say a minor key sounds "sad." I don't know my chords well enough to just ID it off the top, but maybe there's some diminished chords going on? And when you say it changes to something happier, that's shifting to a major chord. A brief sunbeam parting the clouds for this song. But that too is usually how people describe a major chord vs minor.

and bonus - If you can locate it, One of Jeff Buckley's earliest shows in a record store was recorded by a very famous artist you enjoy on handycam. They show there face after the last song and you could tell the respect and impact Jeff had on them. Unfortunately this is a pre-internet handed around on VHS tapes thing. My tape is dead and only copy of mine was thrown out =( If you can get your fans to locate it, you will get a huge kick and I will get to see it again... =D
Never throw away your tapes or VCRs etc! They can be fixed! Even mouldy tapes - cassettes of VHS etc! None of these are being made to the quality of back then so you are throwing away history and it is worth a lot or in some cases priceless - but you did throw it away as you brolly were at the age of 'fuck vhs old shit, nobody uses that any more' rah rah rah.... Came back to me in a decade. lol I just got my home Blockbuster going, 2000+ VHS tapes, 3x hifi VHS VCRs (one is SVHS) so DVD quality on a VHS tape, there are DVHS which is fullHD 18080i onto a VHS tape...lol But yeah, I got hundreds of games from all generations and DVDs, blurays etc etc etc in my Blockbuster room! I do not throw my stuff away, it is all here ready to go! I also have an 88kg HUGE rare AF 16:9 widescreen ratio CRT tv (old box style you might remember before Plasma, LCD then OLED etc took over and everyone threw away their box TVs - mine is rare AF and it is huge plus it is not a regular 4:3 square ratio tv it is a widescreen like a NORMAL tv YOU have at home but it is an old CRT! Anyone else would have thrown this stuff out - but most people do not understand that if something is not being made any more and is obsolete it will not be made again so its rarity will skyrocket over time as sheeple throw away what they assume is "old crap" - I still have mine and it is not crap, it all works! I am in the process now of capturing the oldest of the home movies upscaled from VHS to HD and at a fluid 60FPS!!!! It is VHS like you have NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE!!!! Loads of my tapes have NEVER been available on DVD or Bluray or on streaming - keep that in mind too.... My music recordings are also very rare - DM me if you want more info!
@Defensive_Wounds You sir, are correct! And wise beyond your years even if you as old as Jehovah himself =) I had a physical media problem and am almost completely digital now. I know horrors of moving, storing, curating shudder. I used to have lots of "sampler" tapes from record companies with prospective bands on them. And lots of handycam vhs and super 8 live performances. Damn I wish tape survived or we knew to transfer them back then
I love his voice its sad he couldn't show more of his talent. He is one of my favourite next to Chris Cornell who was his friend and helped him release an album
Imagine if Jeff had another decade, two decades, to perform, write, and release more music… just from selfish desire to hear it all, I WISH we could’ve been graced with that (pun intended). Also his death was just so awful and random. It wasn’t like he was abusing drugs and drink, going down a dark path, and it felt sadly inevitable… that wouldn’t make it better of course or justify a death ever but, somehow that would feel I dunno… like at least he was aware of putting himself in harms way? Maybe that makes no sense, it would still be terrible and totally a loss for the world. But, He simply went for a swim, planning to go meet his band right after and show them the stuff he had been working on, and got super unlucky with a passing boat causing a wake that was too big…
It just seems so much worse when put in the context of him and the band at the time. He had left NY because he wasn’t inspired, and initially had a hard time in Memphis but then, at least according to folks around him and who spoke to him, he seemed to hit a rhythm again and was beginning to feel the next album coming together. And then LITERALLY the day his band is flying down to check out this new stuff and maybe begin recording again, he wants to enjoy a swim… ugh, anyway I’m listening to all his music now 😂
@@croatoansounds it's very sad I think if he wouldn't go to swim that day everyone would enjoy his new music there are things that we will never know . There are still videos and his music to enjoy but still it's a small part of what he could give people.
Jeff was a skilled musician and definitely pushed the boundaries of melody. The songs are so complex underneath, key changes, unusual chord voicings, lots of time and tempo shifts. Johnny Greenwood owes a lot to Jeff Buckley IMO. His live performances are edge of the seat exciting…every moment the train feels like it might go off the track.
If I could wish one musician back into existence who was lost too soon, it’s 100% Jeff. We just scratched the surface of what he was capable of with one proper studio album.
Jeff's talent has haunted me for years. The album Grace is a masterpiece.
He definitely screamed live. The road version of his song eternal life was.. a lot of screaming.

Artist from the 90's till today are still inspired by Jeff. I found out recently that Lana Del Rey is a Massive fan of his work.
Honest question from a 90’s kid. You realise Daniel John’s, Jeff Buckley, Layne staley, Thom Yorke all didn’t use autotune. They sang. That’s it. It was raw and real which made it so damn inspirational

Buckley live is something to behold
Man...some stars burn so bright. Jeff certainly did and we were all the better for it. Some stars go out too soon. Jeff certainly did. I can't imagine the music he could have made. I'm glad he was able to give us a sliver of his genius to hold onto before he left us. Makes him all the more mythical. A true treasure never undimmed by time.
Grace Live À L'Olympia is next level. Dude went for it.
A lot of very famous artists have credited him as an inspiration. His fans include Robert Plant, Brad Pitt, Michael Stipe, Matt Bellamy (Muse), Thom Yorke, Billy Corgan, Leonard Cohen... I could probably go on and on.
It's easy to see why, the versatility in his voice and the power he could belt at is pretty much unmatched in male vocalist, especially while maintaining that kind of control. Combine that with his lyricism and his guitar playing, which are both remarkable, and you have a winning combination.
He left us far too early.
@roguejosh Alright Josh, so... I'm writing this while trying so hard to hold down the tears but emotion is too strong so I'll type through the tears. I will not watch this video, I just can't. I couldn't listen to Jeff Buckley no more, not after the night when we and a group of people of our fan club of Jeff, the official fan club in Italy, where we read a letter Jeff's mother sent to us for the event in which we celebrated Jeff right after his departure from this world. A few emerging names in the Italian music which became very popular along the years attended and some even performed Jeff's songs, and we watched an entire documentary with concerts and more. When I left that place I've never listened to jeff Buckley never again and I won't. Too much the pain, way too much. I consider Jeff Buckley my brother, like a brother lost twice.
Now, as I said I won't hit Play on this video but I want you to understand this: Jeff Buckley is really special and you are right to pay him homage to his memory and to his art. He is the voice of an angel without wings and wherever he is now I really hope he's resting in music. Rest In Music, RIM. That's how I salute every musician who left this world, because Rest In peace is not enough.
Enjoy this little journey, because he left too young and we have lost the opportunity and privilege of listening Jeff Buckley's Art, in both vocal mastery, lyricism and musical writing, more. He could have written and performed for an entire life like artists like the Boss Bruce Springsteen still does but no, we just cannot. So enjoy this apparently short journey and may jeff be part of your life in even a better way than he is in mine but without the sorrow I've going through in his name. I'm very happy you've did this video, most importantly, I'm happy you let this angel enter your life, Josh.

@user-cs1dy7bi5n Wave Goodbye from Euphoria Morning was written as a tribute to Jeff; with who Chris was good friends. In fact, Chris helped Jeff’s mom select the songs that would ultimately appear on his posthumous album, Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk.
Additionally, in the last years of Chris’ life, while playing solo, he often had a red telephone next to him, resting on a stool; this belonged to Jeff Buckley.
And he renamed the album Euphoria Mourning which is what he had originally wanted, just a few years before he died
