Loved everything you had to say about this extraordinary artist. Her piano skills are on a whole different level and her vocal delivery is uniquely hers, Saw her live in the 90's in a concert hall setting. Just her and her piano. She had me and the audience in the palm of her hand !! "Me and a Gun" had us all in tears. Her compositions are always intricate and exquisite.

"You say 'I wanted you to be proud of me.' I always wanted that my.. self."
That tears me in half and folds me up and chews up my soul and spits it back out on the carpet.
Only one song (my fav of all time) hits me harder than this one. And that line the point of the spear.
Thank you so much for reacting to this one @markabusi.

Tori is absolutely incredible live. I've been so fortunate to see her perform several times over the course of her career, and she just keeps getting better and better. If you ever have the chance to see her perform live, GO!

It's a declaration of love, daughter to father. A loving recognition that, while he urges her to pursue her hopes and dreams, he put his own on ice for the sake of her. "The white horses" is a metphor for her hopes and dreams, still "in bed" while she's a little girl. But one day they will be galloping away, and when they do, she better begin her pursuit.
Achingly beautiful and heartbreaking, even though no one has died. Tori live is something very special.

Me and a Gun... takes emotional devastation several notches higher.

Me and a Gun should come with warnings on it. Yeah, you could call them trigger warnings, but... the song contains a level of emotional interaction that nobody is ready for. Doesn't matter who you are. And you can't really even prepare yourself when warned. The warning should be something like, "You're going to get hurt if you listen to this song."

Fortunately I know the song well, so I can’t really do a reaction to it 😳

Another recommendation, Precious Things (Live, Sessions at West 54th St. 1998). You have to see her with her band and their incredible chemistry. The snakedisorder channel has a great quality version of that whole set and Precious Things is the first song.

I always thought white horses represented a knight on a white horse coming to rescue her. Like in fairy tales there's always a knight in shining armor on his white horse. That's how my head made sense of it anyway!

Oh, how lovely. I love this woman so much and have seen her live many times over the decades, each time utterly breathtaking. As for recommendations: Me & a Gun, Montreux 1992, for starters. You gotta be strong foru that one, though!

This is Tori year 1, this song is mostly straightforwardly pro-dad, it's a father trying to help his daughter understand that she needs to love herself first, as much as he does, and he's not dead at all, as a matter of fact I believe both her parents were in the audience for this performance. Sure, there's some melancholy to it, dreams aren't always easily realized, at the point Tori is writing this song, there is no sure thing, she already has a failure under her belt with a synth pop band in the late 80s that broke up before they could finish the album, session musicians were brought in to complete it. The record company have given her free reign to sink or swim, enough rope to hang herself with this solo record, but this song is a beautiful testament to her father who went above and beyond to help her get her career going in her teen years. The third verse and chorus are flipped, they are from Tori to her father, asking him when will he love himself as much as she does, acknowledging the sacrifices made, and when she sings "Never change", in this performance you can see her turn to look at him in the audience, this is why this is such an emotional performance for her. There are songs in the future that definitely touch on issues that exist between Tori and her father, but they come much later.

I think the horses are a metaphor for innocent child dreams with like a fantastic world with 'elves and hobbits'-ish kinda thing. And these were giving her power
And she kept these when growing up, but more like setting them free and bringing them to life (like 'secret powers') ...rather then loosing them.

"Savant" yeah... kicked out of a prestigious music school... at the age of 11... for "musical insubordination." Epic.
There is nobody like Tori Amos, I contend. All other music is "performed" by "artists." What Tori does is get up on stage, open an emotional vein with a musical knife, and bleed for the audience. There's nothing performative here, just her, who, being a musical genius of unprecedented ability, can just directly communicate with her songs. Everybody else is just trying to get to some semblance of that, if they're even trying at all. I would say that this takes some sort of fearlessness on her part, but that's inaccurate, I think she feels fear... she's just brave enough somehow to ignore it completely.

[Recommendation link at the end] Tori Amos is master! At songwriting, piano playing, singing, performing, relating with her audience, exposing her inner self while also protecting that. While her music is wonderful, her live performances are events. I’ve attended 2 or 3 of her live concerts here in San Diego, and have seen a couple that aired on television (my favorite was Live in the Artists’ Den, at the New York Armory in 2009). I’ve loved her since 1995 or 96. Here’s a link to one of my favorite songs of hers, which I got to see her perform on this same 1997 tour. It is such a dynamic song. I think you’ll like it. She just keeps getting better every year.
