    June 1944. D-Day. The Allies rush towards Normandy. Only… this time they encounter German aircraft, never seen before. Traveling through time and space, the modern day German Air Force decides to join the German side and defend France. Jets with guided bombs and missiles face piston engine allied planes. Would those be enough to change history? Would D-day still be a success? Watch the video to find out.

    What I don't see in this video is the sheer shock factor. Binkov portraits Allied air crews seeing how literally thousands of planes bite the dust, hundreds of ships sunk and thousands of personnel dying, and they just keep going on, their resolve unbruised. Just the fact that mistery uncatchable and unkillable planes are reigning havoc on any Allied formation would be enough for them to lose all morale and flee back to Britain. You think that public opinion wouldn't go crazy over so many loses? Even Allied High Command wouldn't keep on pushing against these planes. They simply have no way to know that their missiles and ammunition is limited and would just run out with time. For all they know, the Germans have developed invincible planes that would make short work of any thing the Allies throw at them. That's it, I liked the video otherwise.

      Will all of Binkov's videos- he assumes full moral and continued willingness to fight. But, yeah your right- they'll certainly be an initial shock and awe that'll put the allies scrambling. There is a scenario where this exact factor actually motivates the allies:
      "The Nazis have something that we can´t really beat and are killing us in droves. (Actual "Wunderwaffen") We know they want to conquer us and we are in a state of total war. So they are most certainly using all of these weapons they have, no reason to hide any of their power at this point. If we let this war drag on they will produce more of them. Then they WILL win.
      So we MUST beat them now or we lose."
      This just turned into the battle of Britain 2.0.

    • @sircastic959

      @Yair Correa Sure, they would not have gotten exterminated like the soviets. BUT they were still VERY motivated to win. Motivated enough to at least keep fighting down to the last plane. • @Marmocet
    @Marmocet 3 роки тому +30

    A better strategy for the Germans in this fantasy scenario would probably be for the modern Luftwaffe planes to ignore RAF and USAAF planes in the air and instead to destroy all Allied airfields, which they could do with impunity using just dumb bombs. That would effectively ground the RAF and the USAAF, probably destroy a lot of it on the ground, inflict a lot of operational losses on them by forcing pilots returning from France to try to land in fields and roads, and give the Germans air supremacy within a few hours. With air supremacy achieved, the modern and WWII era Luftwaffes could then focus on things like sinking supply ships and destroying supply dumps in the UK. Cutting off the invasion force's supply lines would reduce the invasion force to a combat-ineffective mob in uniform after about two weeks, which the Wehrmacht could then mop up relatively easily. IT would certainly have been a major blow to US-UK morale to see its large invasion force quickly wiped out.

    Why would the modern jets target allied fighters when they have more high value targets to consider. With the advanced warnings, the Old Luftwaffe could concentrate on dealing with the Allied air power while the modern jets could hit high value command and control targets, ports, ships, factories etc. Without these ports , D Day is already done for. Old german army inflicted heavy casualties at omaha beach. With advanced warnings, even more troops will be concentrated. Most probably all of the landing sites will be very bloody for the allies. Also D Day relied upon the earlier airborne troops in order to succeed. With the modern jets shooting many many more down before they could reach france, those airborne troops will have much less impact and the old german army will have maintained constant supply lines through carentan etc.

    • @Marmocet
      @Marmocet 3 роки тому +7

      I agree. I think I would have ordered the modern Luftwaffe to ignore USAAF and RAF planes in the air, and instead to focus on destroying every airfield in the UK within striking range of France. The modern jets could have achieved that just using dumb bombs and there would have been nothing the Allies could have done to stop them. That would effectively have taken the RAF and the USAAF out of the fight more or less completely. The modern Luftwaffe could then concentrate on things like destroying Allied supply dumps in the UK and any they established in France, sinking US and Royal Navy warships (freeing the old Luftwaffe to focus on taking out supply ships), and destroying all electric power plants in Britain. I think that would pretty effectively cut the Allied invasion forces off from supply, which would render them a mob in uniform after about two weeks, by which time they could be mopped up relatively easily by the Wehrmacht.

      Modern bombs are generally just as powerful as WW2 ones, and it's been demonstrated that battleships can take dozens of bomb hits before going down. It's just really hard to sink several tens of thousands of tons of steel. Some well placed bombs might force a return to port to repair though.
      Real quick, on the subject of "conning tower hit" -- firstly, ships are actually very fast, often faster than WW2 tanks (not like this really matters ... lasers are accurate), but the real problem is that the conning tower on a battleship is absurdly well armored. Ever seen one? It's encased in a foot and a half of steel armor.

    The main issue I have with this is that it assumes the allies would persist despite the absolutely horrific losses. There’s a scene in Aliens where Hicks says “Next time they’ll walk up and knock” and Ripley says “Yeah but they don’t know that.”
    After the first battle of massive casualties it’s hard to see them just throwing troops and planes at the new enemy in the hope they run out of munitions. Their behaviour throughout the war was extremely casualty averse; I expect they would have cancelled D-Day or postponed it indefinitely until they had information on the new threat.

    • @somewhere6
      @somewhere6 4 роки тому +4

      Correct. The Allies don't know the modern munitions are limited. Morale would be plummeting and the Germans freely maneuvering their armour with renewed confidence. Omaha beach would be extremely touch-and-go and with the improved recon available, the Germans would have an excellent chance of splitting the overall beachhead. It is not like the Allies have someone insensitive to casualties like Zhukov in command. The Conservative thinkers like Ike and Monty would never want to risk a total disaster and Tedder would be crying about the lost aircraft. The previous Salerno and Anzio landings had many problems and here the Allies would see their worst nightmare starting to unfold. The urge to pull back and reassess would be heavy.

    I think the invasion would be called off immediately once the Allies saw the unrealistic amount of casualty suffered by its air force and navy. Because they have no idea very few planes could do so much damage, they would assume the Germans have a much much larger defense force than intelligence have suggested (10x at least). The invasion was based on months of reconnaissance of planning and suddenly the information is no longer valid. Therefore they would stop sending in planes and ships for suicide missions and postpone the invasion indefinitely before they could understand the situation. And the psychological impact of real wonder weapons on morale of troops and civilians alike would be immense that the Western Allies may even consider a peace deal.

    There is a major mistake in the narrative here. At 18:17 they say the allies encircled the Germans after a "quick" breakout. That breakout did not take place historically until 7 weeks after the invasion. Even Caen, which is not far from the beach did not fall for 4 weeks. There was no "quick" breakout. Even with the complete control of the air and naval support, the Allies had to grind it out to get room to setup the breakout. The breakout itself, Operation Cobra depended on a major carpet bombing effort. In this scenario, all that becomes questionable both on the losses already sustained and the risk of such a concentration of vulnerable bombers.
    The Germans would have the freedom of movement to concentrate their armour by the end of the first week on the weakest point and have a good chance for a successful breakthrough as the modern Luftwaffe could concentrate on supporting that specific effort.

    I think the Modern Luftwaffe would destroy the command structure. No problem with Taurus Cruise Missile (350 km Range). The 600 available in Modern Luftwaffe would destroy the key leaders of the Allies (War Room in London, Royal Family, Houses of Parlaments,...) , with the possibility to make long Strike Missions with Airbus MRTT even in the US (Pentagon, White House, Congress, Los Alamos,...) With this Shock and Awe, the fighters and bombers of the Allies would not longer take off, the Royal and US Navy would retreat. It would probably had come to a pease treaty within weeks. If the Modern Luftwaffe would have the knowledge of all things that happend before D-Day (especially that Enigma cipher was broken), IT would have been a game changer. But, I don't think the engineers of the Modern Luftwaffe could modernize the production quick enough to become leader in air power. So 10 years later, Germany would have lost the next war.
    The modern Luftwaffe ist no big deal today, too small and not top level equipment, but in 1944, it would have changed the game.

  • @adammorris1756

    Your forgetting some major issues with your assessment. Your forgetting the psychological affect. Now imagine what affect it would have had on Eisenhower and supreme allied commands decision making if the air armada that went in to deliver the 101st and 82nd airborne divisions reported being destroyed in large numbers by planes they never saw or heard but planes were just being blown out of the sky left and right before flak or fighter aircraft opened up with guns. Then add in the reports from any surviving aircraft that these fighters seemed to know their exact positions in the dark almost like they could physically see them (which those pilots in modern fighter jets would be able to see them). you also have to account that modern fighters use a 20mm rapid firing main cannon those guns would have make short work of the transport planes of the time, any escorting fighters would have been ripped apart by those guns as well. Plus with modern targeting assist systems on those fighter jets they would only need to expend short bursts to to knock out an enemy fighter instead of long streams of bullets to get a hit. All of these reports I am sure would have given Eisenhower pause to consider the viability of conducting the D day invasion. But lets assume he goes forward with it anyway, suddenly these fighters the far exceed anything the ME 262 could achieve in means of speed arrive and pilots watch planes firing extremely fast missiles that they cannot out run that seem to home in on them despite their evasive actions. Most planes targeted by the missiles would be downed before they had a real chance to react because they would not be expecting such weapon. Now consider that ground attack planes with their guided munitions are hitting ships with missiles and bombs from out side of the the supporting ships AA bubbles and landing graft are dropping like flies though I also consider Battle Ships would have been priority targets as well as their 15 and 16 inch guns could provide major fire support to the beaches. That also means the overall leadership of the invasion could be decapitated when these few BBs are hit with guided anti ship missiles. During all of these with the advanced warning provided the historical Luftwaffe would be present in much larger numbers providing assistance as well. The psychological affect of these modern missiles dropping planes from the sky with little effort and then the guns of these aircraft inflicting incredible damage in only a few rounds to allied aircraft plus ships being sunk by weapons fired from planes that never had to enter allied AA bubbles coupled with the fact these planes were moving faster than anything the allied had ever seen let alone dreamed of (The sound barrier had not been broken yet at this time) This all would have played a huge psychological affect on the leadership but imagine the troops on the ground? Watching allied planes and ships being dropped with what to them would seem like impunity while suffering 50% casualties on every beach and facing increasingly steep German ground resistance plus the constant pounding and strafing runs being conducted by the historical and future German air forces, add in the struggle to keep enough supplies rolling in as the Germans would have the time and ability to concentrate heavy artillery in the area which with drones spotting would means any allied ship coming within range of the beaches would be under intense artillery fire the entire time. Then we consider the storm that rolled in and prevented the Allies from resupplying the beach heads for 3 days. With increased German troop levels in the air and the presence of these new "wonder" planes in the air forces German commanders would be emboldened and more aggressive. Its likely that in the down time while that storm raged the Germans would move all available forces forward and pre stage them for an offensive push as well as all effort would be pushed into insuring as many normal and modern planes were operational, fueled, and armed for when the storm lifted. Knowing German blitzkrieg tactics the moment the storms lifted the German troops would be in ready positions waiting the arrival of the German air forces. Once those combined old and modern planes arrived and started reeking Havok on the allied lines the Germans would have launched and all out offensive on every sector of the beachheads. Being low on ammunition, fuel, and food I really do not consider it likely the reduced number of troops and equipment would have been able to hold against Germans troops fully stocked on supplies crashing into them hard. Allied bombing would have also stopped. Allied doctrine established 25% losses in bombers and aircraft as acceptable and sustainable. Allied doctrine called for an immediate cessation of bombing missions if casualties broke over 25%. The first bomber wave that was sent to Germany and lost at least 250 bombers to a combination of sam missiles their fighters could not protect them from and modern aircraft their fighters again could not protect them from would have called off the bombing missions. This breathing space for the German industry would have had noticeable affect. I really think you under estimate the psychological impact the modern German air forces abilities would have had on allied leaders. I think honestly with significant loses to the 101st and 82nd on the night before D day and then the drastic losses in aircraft and ships the morning along with every beach inflicting 50% or better casualties because of German reinforcements arriving quickly on station as they would not be harried by allied air power on their way to the beaches would have lead Eisenhower to call of the invasion and return to England with the bulk of allied forces still intact the used in a future invasion after this new threat had been evaluated. Also considering German scientist would have also likely started immediate process to try and reverse engineer as much as they could from the modern equipment brought back this could have huge ramifications on the wars out come. Also not considering that once the D day invasion was called off after suffering significant losses German would have very quickly transferred large bulks of the troops in France and Norway to the eastern front. Considering D day would likely have been called off on June 6th or 7th that would leave the Germans 16 days to transfer ground and air forces to the eastern front prior to operation Bagration launched by the Russians on the 23rd of June. This sudden influx of extra troops and air forces especially the modern planes the Russians would have received terrifying reports about could very well have caused the operation to fail. There is so much involved in this hypothetical situation that you have left out of consideration.

    I would expect the germans to do raids on allied airfields as well, to prevent them from bringing as many planes as quickly. And as you've pointed out, strafing ground targets from the air had a bad consistency record, so I'd expect the germans to focus on transport aircraft, ignoring allied fighters, as their limited range would more than likely prevent them from giving chase, trying to catch them on the ground, and having the german team focusing on a fast turn around time, trying to maintain some presence at all times.

    There's a few factors not taken into account in this scenario.
    1) The role of the Kriegsmarine. The modern Luftwaffe would take a heavy toll on both the Allied air force and the Allied navy, which would greatly assist the Kriegsmarine to take a more active role than was historically the case. Whatever shipping the Luftwaffe wasn't able to sink, you can be the Kriegsmarine would be able to mop up, leaving very little that made it to the shore.
    2) Both Allies and Axis (and probably Soviets) would instantly start trying to reverse-engineer the new technology to make more/their own copies of it, as well as start trying to devise some sort of countermeasures. It would take weeks or months to even start getting some results, but since this war wouldn't be ending anytime soon it is very much relevant. The Germans of course would have a massive advantage with intact examples of the technology to work with. Allies might obtain a crashed plane if they're lucky, or maybe a fully intact one if one of the modern Luftwaffe pilots were to defect which let's be honest there's a good chance that would happen because of reasons that don't need to be explained.
    3) Allied Strategic bombing campaign over Germany would be crushed by the modern Luftwaffe and SAMs. This means German factories and industry would not be as heavily devastated as it historically was, and would be able to recover. This means German production on all armaments would be far greater than historically the case, and this would have an impact on the war in ways that are difficult to calculate.
    For these three and maybe other reasons I say its a lot less likely for an Allied victory than Binkov suggests. His simulation isn't properly taking these factors into consideration.

But I think if they manage to defeat the Normandy invasion the western Allies might sue for some sort of peace and then they could free up troops from the West for some sort of push in the East.
      That is yet another thing Binkov's scenario doesn't take into account. Historically the Allies insisted on unconditional surrender for the Axis, but with the heavy losses thanks to the modern Luftwaffe it would probably force the Allies to reconsider that stance and accept some sort of negotiated peace.

    I think a better tactic would be to have the modern fighters focus on the capital ships in the navy as those take much longer to replace. Once those are removed, you could have the German submarines attack. Also, attacking the fighter bases in England, especially at night, would be quite effective in taking out the Allied airforce. A few well-placed laser-guided bombs could also take out the command leadership of the Allies. Using the modern fighter's asymmetric advantages could have a much larger impact than just counting the number of missiles that they shoot at enemy fighters.

      @Ragnaroz6000 4 роки тому +2

      @@dylanmilne6683 The raw size and amount of individual sealable compartments in a battleship makes sinking them quite challenging. Even if the bunker busters hit directly through the deck of the ship, the damage would mostly be internal structure damage, and unlikely to piece the hull of the ship. Penetrating the hull from inside the ship is much harder than from outside, since the thick steel hull has a "solid" barrier of water behind it - whereas a hit from the outside would mean hitting the steel plate with a hollow area behind it.
      Even if the bunker buster managed to hit from the external side of the hull, and below the waterline, a single hit would be very unlikely to cause enough damage by itself. The largest battleships of that era (Iowa, Yamato and the likes) shot shells in the 2500-3300 lbs range with similar or superior TNT equivalent of the Taurus, and their armor was designed partially with this in mind.
      The Yamato battleship got hit by an American torpedo that managed to blow a 5 meter wide hole in the hull, which basically just meant that it had to sail to port for maintenance/repairs.
      So like @richardsen mentioned, you could likely disable their ability to carry out their mission, but sinking these giants would prove quite difficult with modern tech weapons meant for modern threats - those Taurus weapons would simply be better used for different targets where they would have better success rate.

      If the western allies get bogged down rather than braking our of Normandy Germany still cant put more troops on the eastern front.

    It is questionable whether a piston engine would produce enough of a heat signature for IR AAMs to engage at maximum range. If the modern planes had to get within visual range of the WWII allied planes they would take at least a few losses. With hundreds of P-51s, P-47s, Spitfires, and Tempests hanging clouds of .50cal and 20mm fire in front of the oncoming jets, a few are bound to be either shot down or damaged enough to prevent future sorties.

    There alot of assumptions. In fact, modern Luftwaffe is right now not prepaired for a big defending war. If they would, we would have much more planes. Also, I guess shooting down a old allied bomber just with the jet machine gun is also more reasonable than using your few sidewinder rockets.

    • @manictiger

      There's also the assumption that the U.S., or even the U.K. would fight to the last man. Morale in bomber fleets was already really low with the loss rates back then. At some point, either the officers or the enlisted would have seen the catastrophic tolls and decided enough was enough. The American population, who wasn't even interested in war in 1939 - 1940, would have gotten quickly sick of it, too. Hard to say where the breaking point would have been, but retreating out of France is a real possibility.

    I love your videos but I don´t think you put enough thought in the ship destroying ability or more specific how many of the ships really matter.
    The Allies might have used 7k ships. But around 38 ships (the largest troop transports) were responsible for carrying about 25% of the infantry landed on D-Day. Destroying those, which make up less than 1% of the fleet, is worse than Omaha Beach on every beach since it means more than 10k loses for Omaha and more than 5k for the others each, before the landings even start.
    Add in the 7 battleships, 25 cruisers, 2 monitors and we are still way under the 100+ ships that the modern day German air force could destroy without even really giving it their all. They could easily in addition to the ships mentioned destroy 1/3 of the destroyers. On Day one. Without really trying that hard. Most likely the invasion will be called off at that point and any destroyers and bigger warships fleeing German/French waters.
    Still if we go with the mindset that the invasion is to big to be called off: The modern day German air force could complete the task of destroying the destroyers plus any big warships called in as replacement and would still have capacity to destroy more transport ships on Day two. Again focusing on the biggest ships and leaving the smaller ones to the regular WWII era German air force and coastal batteries, many of the later which would have been originally taken out or suppressed by the now missing warships.
    Unless the Allies continue to feed large ships into the fire, day three would be the day the modern day German air force starts looking for bigger ships elsewhere. A few days later the question is not how to supply the invasion in France but the British Isles themselves. The modern German air force easily doing what the German WWII U-boats and Navy could not, blockading Britain.
    Note the Allies can´t easily out produce the modern day German air force when it comes to replacing big ships, like it can with planes.

      Totally agree, I think they would not focus on planes as they are only a nuisance at this point and even normal machineguns can take down ww2 era bombers pretty well. If they take out the bigger ships the material and personnel losses would be so astronomical (along with the massive psychological effect, me 262 on super steroids kind of psychological effect) that I even dare to say they might propose a ceasefire if the Germans can bluff that they have infinite supply of these planes.
      Don't forget that especially night time raids would be nigh impossible with modern jetfighters around and any kind of major air offense would yield hundreds of planes lost and thousands dead (even if rockets run out, the Eurofighters could be retrofitted with 20-30 mm ww2 cannons under the wings with radars and night vision they'd simply decimate the night time bomber runs).
      Allied morale would plummet, German would rise.

    Short answer is no, the German air force could not get 4 fighters up for a nato exercise, and the same lady who ran the show, is now in charge of the eu.
