    This film of the 1939 fair is the finest I have seen. The night time fountain show is beyond striking.

    I was at the 64 WF when I was a young kid. There are videos on UA-cam showing then and now videos of the Fair grounds.

    I remember my dad talking about the 1939 World's Fair.
    He even had some things from it.
    Thank you for posting this film.
    If my dad was alive, he would have loved seeing it.
    By the way, this is an excellent film.
    Like TomAlton said, it is the finest I have seen.

      I know, right? I know this comment is 6 years old, but i still watch footage of old worlds fair. I wonder why they stopped it?

    You can still go and see the fair, they kept it exactly how it was back then , the cars and all.

    I love this video, thanks so much for sharing this treasure! I love the Wonder Bakery pavilion, it’s such a gorgeous building! I own a Wonder Bakery NY World Fair postcard and a original label of a Wonder Bakery NY World Fair Bread label. I would give a kingdom to go back in time to see this whole fair! 😍💖

    The Westinghouse Time Capsule was put together as one of the major exhibits of both the 1939 & 1964,1965 New York World's Fair. Westinghouse commissioned the publication of “The Book of Record of the Time Capsule”. Thousands of copies of the book have been distributed throughout the world, in hopes of keeping the memory of the capsule alive until 6939 AD. The capsule is buried fifty feet down at exactly 40° 44' 34".089 North Latitude, 73° 50' 43".842 West Longitude.

    This was produced for 16mm "home movie" projectors by Official Films, one of the leasing distributors of "home movie entertainment" at the time {old cartoons and live-action shorts, travelogues, "sportsreels", highlights of famous feature films, etc.}. There were TWO versions of this one- silent [with intertitles] and sound. Occasionally, a subject of this magnitude demanded color film- but you paid extra for it.

    Strange to see the way we used to be, everything new and clean, pride in our industries (who've all since outsourced most of their labor) . We now have crumbling infrastructure and an overwhelming grip of pessimism have taken the country. It really is heartbreaking. That being said, even in current times; I would much rather be the US of 2012 than the Germany of 1939.

    They were, but mostly only the original footage. When they started to broadcast television, the footage was in color but the screens displaying it were just b&w

    I betcha they had color for a while in the 30's but it was only for speceal use like anything else that is new.
    The world fair was supose to bring out the new stuff that might take place later on in that future. Believe or not EPCOT at Disney world is a living Worlds fair that is also a theme park at the same time.

    they really should bring back to the US, looking at my history books and seeing pictures of one of the World Fairs i say 'damn i wish i could have been there, it look like fun" but then again it also depends on public interest which the last one here, didn't have

      We've lost touch with recognizing and celebrating what can be done and created here. So much is no longer made here, jobs have disappeared and we spend too much time worrying about impeachments, ondictments,reality tv , social media and celebrity lifestyles...

    how come there isn't any more World's Fair in any state and i wish i was born doing the 1930's

  • @1324TN
    @1324TN 15 років тому

    But after 04 it didn't feel so much as a Worlds Fair type thing as much just a big vacation spot for the whole family. So to say that we don't really have good world fair since Japan in the late 60's or if you consider Disney World's EPCOT like me , then I would say since 2006.

    @edwardjames50 Exactly. I often wonder the same thing. Why don't we have world's fairs or world exhibitions anymore? Clearly we need it now more than ever!

    • @larrydj7571
      @larrydj7571 4 роки тому

      The country is too busy worrying about impeachments and indictments, reality tv shows ,social media and celebrity lifestyles. No more pride, recognition ,celebration of what this country can do and create. That was the idea of Worlds Fairs back then.

    The '39 New York Fair has the reputation of being the finest in history. No more World's Fairs now; everyone HATES each other.

    • @larrydj7571
      @larrydj7571 4 роки тому

      Yes no Worlds Fairs today....all you have now are overrated overpriced Disney type parks, and too much a divide in today's society(Dem or Rep.) to celebrate the country's accomplishments....too much worrying about impeachments, celebrities lifestyles and reality TV to even care anymore....such a country of division nowadays. None of this back in 39

    How do you mean, tonyace . There is a general World Fair every 4 years, and a small one theme world fair ever year inbetween. Always in another host country / host city. Perhaps you've never learned that the world is bigger then the USA? Try to look across the borders...

  • @matrox

    Seems like a modern fair and nice video, but just 73 years earlier slavery and the Civil War was still in effect. People still living then were actually still around to remember it. Those in there 80s and 90s then probably had grandparents who were born when George Washington was still alive. Can you see how times links itself together???

  • @wagnerfilm

    Just think, all that optimism. And then Germany invaded Poland.
    Shame about the time code.

  • @Wig4
    @Wig4 11 років тому

    The Nazism was already going on unhindered since 1932. This means, 'all the optimism' was walking through life, blinffolded, as usual.
