They're both Klon clones but she's using the Archer as a clean boost. If you turn the drive down it doesn't get that Klon-drive tone and is a pretty transparant clean boost.
@@benjaminvelleman I realize that but she said she has 5 Different drives, not that she has 3 different drives and 2 are the same but is using one of them differently. I use my Archer as a clean boost and it works great.
Yeah, I thought it might be the “Archer Clean,” but it appears to be the Ikon. I have two silver ones I use on different boards. One’s an early one with Ge diodes, the other Si. I run them with the drive anywhere from all the way down to about 9:00, so the diodes don’t really matter that much. She is right about the versatility. Works great as a boost or a drive. Tubescreamers don’t like my Sunface.
So, I just have to say I appreciate your video more than any other guitar/pedal/amp vid on youtube because you stick to the content. Period. You demonstrate the overdrives and how you utilize them, explaining very clearly and with great articulation. You don't try to blow ppl away with your best licks that you practice just to try to impress all the viewers and get oohs and ahhs. Fantastic!
Overdrive pedals are my favorite type of pedals, I just can't get enough of them. From the class to the crass I love them all. Just starting to break up to full on broken up like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
There are so many folks who are self conscious about the gear they use and think they need some special pedal to sound good. But, in music, what sounds good is good. Don’t feel bad if you don’t have some “magic” overdrive. Just love whatever sounds good to you regardless of the hype or price tag :)
@@vebtyrit Agreed. It works well in several applications. She uses it as a clean boost and goes with the Centura for "the klon thing". Worth pointing out that the Ikon and the Archer have different diodes, so they feel a bit different under the fingers (when played loud, that is... At bedroom volume, it's all the same).
It was so good I had to watch it again. You know Marty, Lindsay just inspired me to encourage you to make a distortion Pedal! Call it "Back to the Blues"! Or you can Indeed call it " Liquid Shwartz"! Especially if you can get a distortion Pedal that in a mid-range distortion to complement your Shwartzenator pedal.
I use a JHS modded Soul Food. $100 brand new on Reverb. It does all the Klon stuff, plus smooth, saturated distortion. Amazing tone, easy to find and super affordable.
If you title this “You’re using the wrong overdrive” I expect to hear about the strengths and weaknesses, and maybe some misconceptions, about some overdrive pedals. She basically just did a little demo. Cool vid, but terrible misnomer with the title there...
Good explanation of the differences between them. The only thing I'd add (in a part 2 video?) is showing how each one lends itself to certain types of licks or guitars. When playing the same lick through each, and on the same guitar, it's hard to describe the scenario that the individual pedal sounds best. For example, a tube screamer can sound great with a Strat neck pickup playing blues, while a distortion pedal sounds great with a humbucker bridge pickup playing harder rock licks or a ripping solo. Knowing that helps a newer player match whichever one to their guitar and style. As for my favorite overdrive pedal, it's the Greer Lightspeed (paired with a JHS @, you can cover a lot of ground).
I think she meant EL34. HRM was the Hot Rod Marshall/Hot Rubber Monkey with EL34 and different tonestack. Sounded more like a Marshall... Many later versions of the ODS have "HRM" controls on the inside of the amplifier, which is a "hot rodded Marshall" tone stack that sits "on top" of the overdrive channel or, in other words, comes after the overdrive channel tube gain stage.
I’m hoping to be this good one day, I haven’t even started using pedals. I have just started following your channel and you have really helpful videos. Thanks so much for making these!
This Video is honestly helping me so much, i always just pick out the overdrive and distortion that sound coolest to me this is very informative, Thank you 😁👌🏽
I think it's good to know that different Overdrive pedals will give different results, and that's saying a lot about most pedals in general! Awesome work!
Exploring the Xotic SL Drive that recently arrived at the doorstep. So far...the Super Bass is the preferred setting...so far. Beautiful. Thanks for this timely vid.
A.) Most drives will work fine if you have the right *amp* B.) There's a few "right amps" for everyone C.) Any TS, Klone, or boost will work with the right amp D.) You're more versatile with less tones on the right amp E.) Convenience is fine, but they make some *amazing* higher wattage speakers that breathe life into 1x12s, so the bass knob doesn't take you out of the mix F.) If you want a small 1x12 another 1x12 extension cab won't kill you and if you aren't an asshole you'll find a better level on stage and for the audience G.) Overdrives are whimsical band aids through the wrong amp/cab and you'll lose so much $$$ H.) If you can't return a pedal after taking it to band practice or a gig *BEWARE* I.) Stop buying a new overdrive pedal every 2 weeks to finally "get your dream sound" out of a Fender Blues series amp. Just fucking re-tube the goddamn thing, upgrade the speaker, and if you need more bass get a closed back 2x10/1x15 extension cab to go underneath. Then proceed to plug in any pedal you've ever enjoyed and thank me. You're welcome. They're great workhorse 6L6 amps but I used to work at a music store and people wasted inordinate amounts of money pretending like they were one magic overdrive away from bliss instead of just admitting that 1x12s choke low end and that groove tubes just sound like a decent starting point 🤦♂️
Also, I'll add that many overdrive sounds much better if you put a booster before the OD pedal. Try the MXR Micro Amp for a transparent boost or a Xotic EP booster for a bassy mid boost.
For the Vox AC15C1, it drives very cool with the stock features, just try a red compressor (aka MXR Dyna Comp), a good booster (MXR Micro Amp) and a Mid pusher overdrive (I suggest the Nux Tubeman MKII). With these three pedal you will have a huge range of tones.
RYRA Klone is a killer...had my sights set on a Tumnus, but after playing the Klone there was no debate. Use it for a boost/low gain and you'll be pleased, but get that gain knob up around 10-11 o'clock and beyond and you get into the real sauce!
O love ts as a booster!! Directly into the clean Chanel of my solid state practise Orange amp, sounds strange, I like it but I don't love it. Too many mids
I have a TS 808 (love it!) plus a fulltone ocd as a stage two OD pedal. I’m not too crazy about the ocd; even at 18 volts I feel like it lacks mid definition. I play through an orange rocker 30 also. Thinking about getting a Klon KTR or King of Tone.
All you really need is a decent Germanium Fuzz, maybe with with a boost like the EP or the Spark, and use the guitars volume knob, - best cleans, to blown out fuzz. Having said that, I have a bunch of different drives and amp in a box types, mostly to achieve varied sounds at lower, controlled volumes. The amp in a box types are great on the end of the chain when you will be using a variety of different amps; it enables you to consistently get a certain sound, basically taking the place of the amps pre amp section. I found the EHX East River Drive sounds very good. TS style, better than my previous owned TS9. Nice for 80€. Second in the pb I stack a Timmy cheap clone, very transparent and more EQ controls (Caline Pure Sky). Then MXR Dist+, I can make it sound very beefy, alone is quite harsh. Little Big Muff for noise or extreme ambient sounds. Amp Marshall Origin 50, cleanish. Removed an SD-1 C6 modded, too 80ish tone for my taste..
my favorite OD is a Canadian boutique pedal from Six degree FX called Sally Drive ...Lindsay you should try that one ...all my guitars sound great thru it ... it really sound great paired with a deluxe reverb amp silverface
The Rocket Archer is a Klon Clone. It has that inherent mid hump and gain character. When I think of a clean boost, I think of something fairly flat, like a micro amp or EP booster. Also, since when is a Dumble a British EL84 style amp??? Not that any of this really matters as long as it sounds good.
Jeff Aulich most of my Klon clones lose the hump when set clean, which is why many use them as an “alway on” boost. Also, the Vertex pedal is the “HRM” version, which models the “hot rodded Marshall” Dumbles. These Dumbles use EL34s though, not EL84s.
So I just double checked and the topology of the Klon circuit actually splits the signal into three pathways, one of which is essentially a clean boost if the gain is turned down.

Video was really good and informative - unlike the video title. Why mess up a perfectly fine video with unnecessary click bait that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the video itself?
My next overdrive pedal will likely be a Greer Lightspeed. It's a light "transparent" overdrive that just adds great character to the tone. Every video I've seen about this pedal makes me covet it more. I just don't have the dosh at the moment, but check it out, if you haven't already.ua-cam.com/video/paIp0B-VI4M/v-deo.html FYI I'm a massive fan of Mr. Massad, but when he says "As you know, I like to put a little bit of drive in there..." I think there's more than "a little "in his base tone.

With a pedalboard looking like that,I can only imagine what the inside of her car looks like 🤯
Great video Marty! Would love if you could do a tutorial on The Misfits, Saturday night. Its my favorite song right now and im having trouble learning it, as its in half step down tuning. There is another video out there but its not as good as you’re tutorials. Thanks my dude keep up the great tutorials!
Thanks again Lindsey, Marty.
Marty whats a good amp for about 300 or 400 dollors
Boss katana that marty uses in vids is amazing. And it's only like 220 bucks. I highly recommend. Sounds very tube like and you can get a ton of sounds.
Marshall code 25
Fender Blues Deluxe. $399.99 All Tube
Cody already said it, but I'm a Boss Katana BOI. Can't beat it in the price range, too versatile, too much tone.
@@MartyMusic you should review the fender tonemaster
I saw her Instagram post a long time ago. Instead of a shoe closet she had a pedal closet. That was the night I fell in love.
Loved the centura. Sounds awesome with that strat. Hey the guitar Looks so smooth to play . Is that a satin or high glossy neck/fretboard?
3:55 Let's hear what this sounds. Like.
Marty love the new look
I literally have all of those pedals in some form on my board. Though I don’t have my centura and archer on the same board. To me they kinda sound the same ish.
Video was really good and informative - unlike the video title.
Why mess up a perfectly fine video with unnecessary click bait that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the video itself?
She was awesome in devil's rejects
Boss OD3 covers a lot of ground🤘🏻
My next overdrive pedal will likely be a Greer Lightspeed. It's a light "transparent" overdrive that just adds great character to the tone. Every video I've seen about this pedal makes me covet it more. I just don't have the dosh at the moment, but check it out, if you haven't already.ua-cam.com/video/paIp0B-VI4M/v-deo.html
FYI I'm a massive fan of Mr. Massad, but when he says "As you know, I like to put a little bit of drive in there..." I think there's more than "a little "in his base tone.
Love you girl, you're the best!
I like how she says love.
Isn’t the archer a Klone as well?
I think it is!
Let’s hear the pedals using the bridge pickup. Overdrives always sound best using that pickup. Neck pickups sound too farty in the low end.
