For what it's worth, I discovered that after having made the switch to vanilla gnome I could no longer open "settings". I was able to fix this by opening dconf-editor to /org/gnome/control-center/last-panel and switching "Use default value" to OFF. Just in case someone else runs into this!
Why do you remove a few packages at the beginning? (sudo snap remove gnome-3-26-1604 gnome-calculator gnome-characters gnome-logs gnome-system-monitor)
In Windows I like being able to create a desktop shortcut icon, I tried Ubuntu Mate 16.04 and liked it but I didn’t know how to create desktop icons, and some software I installed from 3rd party websites would end up in ‘accessories’ menu, while others would only open when I went all the way into downloads folder and double clicked on the apps icon in there and even if I drag and dropped the icon somewhere else it still wouldn’t open Now...I wanted to upgrade to Ubuntu Mate 18.04 via 17.10 but 17.10 baulked on me after entering encryption password so now I am at a crossroads of which Linux distro to start fresh with. I like Mint, Ubuntu Mate or Kubuntu...but I’m wondering if stock Ubuntu 18.04 will allow 3rd party software apps I’ve downloaded to launch from the desktop since they are the official Ubuntu 18.04 that the 3rd party companies cater for as well as Windows and Mac? rather than chasing everything around in different menus like I was in Ubuntu Mate 16.04? Or would I have the same issue with all variants of Ubuntu 18.04 anyway? so I might as well choose Mint, Ubuntu Mate or Kubuntu...although I am using intel i7 processor and Nvidia m850 graphics card in my laptop, and I’ve heard rumors that Mint and Kubuntu can get screen tearing with Nvidia graphics? And that stock Ubuntu and Ubuntu Mate are more compatible as they have better ‘compositor’? Which leaves me with Ubuntu Mate as final preference if none of them launch apps from the desktop anyway? Appreciate suggestions :)
Well, if you're still looking for an alternative Zorin OS might be a good choise. I don't know what 3d party software you're downloading from sites that couldn't be installed via terminal already, but I'm afraid that if they are out of the box applications you'll be having this problem on pretty much every distro. Making shortcuts on Linux is kind of a bitch and a half... the easiest way will be to just add a launcher to your menu-bar, by the way.
Totally agree, the gnome desktop looks way better. Clean. Ubuntu should offer it as an option at install time.

Very informative and helpful AJ. Vanilla gnome is my preference as well.
Will this install of stock gnome result in any issues/conflicts down the road with updates?
Thats a huge headphones you have. Also thanks for the tip.

What do you mean?
